I’m heart broken, and I’m on my own crying.

I’m away with work on a business trip, I’m heading home today… but my childhood dog has been put down over night, my mum told me as he got very poorly and he had a horrendous turn. I’m on my own in a hotel room, 200 miles away from home and I’m so sad, I can’t even hug my husband because he’s not here. He’s also a sleep as he’s at home with my kids ( my post is at 6am ) and he doesn’t even know. I feel so sad and I’ve got to face work colleagues at breakfast in 2 hours.

am I being silly?

My Milo xxx

Cute dog and a great name.
Maybe get this picture made into a frame or canvas.
Sorry for your loss x

Starlight1979 · 02/04/2026 08:55

What a beautiful boy Milo was. I'm sure he had a lifetime of love and happiness ❤

Overflowingwithcosmos · 02/04/2026 09:00

Not silly. My beautiful dog died decades ago and I still think about him. They can create such a special bond. Hugs OP.

My3dahliasarebloominlovely · 02/04/2026 09:04

My childhood dog died nearly 50 years ago. He still appears in my dreams. He's been joined by 3 other dogs and 2 cats over the years. They were all my family and are still loved and missed to this day. Sending you hugs and sympathy @mumstheword1x

Iocanepowder · 02/04/2026 09:06

You’re not being silly op.

I was in the office when i got a call to say my childhood dog (golden lab) had been put to sleep and i had to go home as I couldn’t stop crying.

I also cried for about 30 mins after watching Marley and Me!

feelingfree17 · 02/04/2026 09:08

Aaaw, so sorry.

It’s so hard to lose a dearly loved animal, especially as he was your childhood friend. You would have spent many special moments together and he would have had the happiest little (all be it) too short life.
Sending you a big hug 💐

CakeFace1234 · 02/04/2026 09:08

What a beautiful boy! I think when your photo appeared, everyone else's heart broke a little for you too. He stole your heart and was probably a big part of your childhood. Completely understandable that you are so upset. So sorry for your loss.

BiscoffCheesecakes · 02/04/2026 09:09

Beautiful dog. Your colleagues will understand. I went into work the day after my cat got run over & we had to have him pts. Once I got the initial tears out I felt better

PurpleReindeer2 · 02/04/2026 09:10

Awww so sorry OP. Milo was utterly adorable. Remembrr the joy he brought into your life and be glad that he lived even though you are so sad he has now gone. 🥰

Awwwww, I'm so sorry @mumstheword1x 😘Of course you're not being unreasonable or silly. It's a huge wrench to lose your childhood pet.

The last dog my parents (and I) had died about 5 years after I left home, (so when I was about 25,) and she was 12. So she's been with us since I was 13, and I had evolved from bratty teen who had only just started my periods, was still at school, and had never kissed a boy; to an engaged woman in her mid 20s with her own home, who had had visited 7 different countries, and had had a job for 8 years.

When she died I cried for 3 days straight. She was the most perfect dog. 😢 I only lived 3 miles from my parents at the time, so I still saw her 2-3 times a week, and I loved her so much.

Thinking of you today. ❤

Not silly at all. I put my first dog to sleep nearly two years ago and still cannot think about him without welling up. Am doing so, just typing this. I cried solidly for days after he passed.

Cry as much as you need to and get home to DH for hugs.
Sorry for your loss. 💐

kombuchabucha · 02/04/2026 09:20

I'm crying just after reading your post! YANBU. Hope you made it through breakfast okay and get home to your family soon.

reversegear · 02/04/2026 09:25

Oh not silly at all they are family, I was overseas when my dog was PTS I’d had him for my 12th birthday and I was busy getting on with life, it took me so long to get over that.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/04/2026 09:31

Anyone who’s lost a beloved dog will understand. 🐶❤️
I just hope none of your colleagues will be like one of mine, who said, ‘Well, you can always get another’ - as if I’d had my iPad nicked or something.

KimberleyClark · 02/04/2026 09:37

I am so sorry OP your feelings are totally normal and understandable. Think of him safe and warm and happy in your heart. Sending virtual hugs.

carnivalcat · 02/04/2026 09:44

YANBU! I found out about my childhood dog passing away on a day I was due to travel home too, I was actually in the airport. I got by by not mentioning it to the people around me all. I wouldn’t have been able to have the conversation without crying!

Happyhettie · 02/04/2026 09:45

Not silly at all. I’ve had a big cry over my cat who died 3 years ago this morning. I really miss her. They are part of the family and we are lucky to have them.

Milo was a gorgeous boy, I’m so sorry for your loss. Sending a big hug xx

CoraPirbright · 02/04/2026 09:46

There’s no pain quite like it. I lost my beloved boy last summer and am still crying about it (very occasionally) now. Feel like a complete prat but I am just still so sad. Take care OP and please do not worry - plenty of people will know just how awful you feel and will completely sympathise.

Queenofthestonage · 02/04/2026 09:46

So sorry for your loss. I have a lovely old Westie and just the thought of being without him is upsetting. Big hugs xx

tattychicken · 02/04/2026 10:06

What a gorgeous little dog!! I love Westies, had one years ago. Happy little souls. So sorry for you. ❤️

Again, why do this to someone at work??

Krobus · 02/04/2026 10:19

You are not being silly and if you want to skip breakfast and just go home and get something to eat on your own in the journey that should be something a good employer and colleagues would understand. My mum had a lovely westie. Earlier this year I lost my last and favourite cat who I'd had for two decades; my entire adult life. It hit me far harder than I expected. Only time heals it and I did start feeling much better after a week or so. I still miss him terribly but it isn't so sad and painful now. I enjoy looking at pictures of him and talking with the family about what a wonderful boy he was.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 02/04/2026 10:26

Beautiful Milo🩷 I'm sorry. It's awful. Be kind to yourself today x
