I’m heart broken, and I’m on my own crying.

I’m away with work on a business trip, I’m heading home today… but my childhood dog has been put down over night, my mum told me as he got very poorly and he had a horrendous turn. I’m on my own in a hotel room, 200 miles away from home and I’m so sad, I can’t even hug my husband because he’s not here. He’s also a sleep as he’s at home with my kids ( my post is at 6am ) and he doesn’t even know. I feel so sad and I’ve got to face work colleagues at breakfast in 2 hours.

am I being silly?

What a beautiful boy he was, I’m sure he was your very best friend when you were younger. It’s heartbreaking when our doggies pass away, my girl went over the rainbow bridge 5 years ago, she’s buried in my garden and I’m still not sure I could move house and leave her behind. Have a safe journey home to your loved ones.

ThatFlightyTemptressAdventure · 02/04/2026 07:14

Not silly at all. Dogs are wonderful companions and take a very special place in our hearts.

He was beautiful, with so much character in that face. I hope you get a hug soon 💐

Pancakeorcrepe · 02/04/2026 07:14

It’s heartbreaking when they go. They are family 💐💐💐

FoolOfShips · 02/04/2026 07:18

I'm so sorry - an awful thing happening at the worst time for you. Milo was a beautiful boy, he looks like a picture of 'the perfect Westie' in your photo. Do share this sad news with your colleagues if you can - mine were very supportive when I lost my beloved doggie.

Lilactimes · 02/04/2026 07:18

He's a beautiful boy it's such a heart breaking thing to go through. Nothing ever prepares you and you definitely aren't being silly.

I think if you could tell a colleague or even skip the breakfast , they would understand xx

sending love xx x

KnewYearKnewMe · 02/04/2026 07:27

Oh my goodness, what a beautiful boy. I’m so, so sorry, OP.

Our dogs are our family 💕💕💕

Booboobagins · 02/04/2026 07:36

Big hugs @mumstheword1x how awful. I'm so sorry, but at least with our non human family, we can be kind and prevent pain and significantly reduced quality of life. I am so sad for you 😢

Some people who don't have non human family might not understand the grief is the same as losing a family member, but it is because they are your family. So, in the main, your colleagues will empathise. Tell at least one of them. X

EyeLevelStick · 02/04/2026 07:41

Oh, look at his beautiful little face. I’m so sorry OP. If you’re travelling by public transport, come back and tell us more about him during your journey.

One of my cats was called Milo. Absolute nutter, and I still miss him.

loislovesstewie · 02/04/2026 07:48

I'm so sorry for the loss of your lovely and loved Milo. He was a member of your family and it's natural to feel the loss. Try to remember that Milo knew he was loved and he loved you in return. He had the best life with you and was happy. Sending hugs to you. Fly high, Milo over the rainbow bridge to meet your friends. 💔💔💔

Daftypants · 02/04/2026 07:53

I am so very sorry for your loss OP xx
The death of a beloved dog is utterly heartbreaking 💔
Big hugs coming your way xx

Villanellesproudmum · 02/04/2026 07:54

So sorry, if a colleague told me I’d understand and say just go home, it is hard. I had to take a few days off work when my dog died years ago. You weren’t to know.

Bristolandlazy · 02/04/2026 07:57

Not silly at all, I would be devastated. He was beautiful. Hugs

Tacohill · 02/04/2026 07:57

Of course you’re not being silly!!

I’m so sorry for your loss 💐

I would either spend the morning in the hotel room having a good cry or go home early.

Either way, I’d be texting my colleagues apologising saying that you’ve had some bad news (you don’t need to specify) and that you’re unable to make it to breakfast (unless you want to).

LoverOfBells · 02/04/2026 08:03

Oh OP, you’re not being silly at all. Losing a much loved family pet is absolutely devastating, it’s the awful penalty we pay for loving them and being loved by them in return.

What a beautiful picture of Milo - absolutely gorgeous. Please look after yourself. I’ll be thinking of you this morning as I know from experience just how heart breaking it is. Xxx

randomchap · 02/04/2026 08:06

He was a very handsome boy.

You and your family gave him a great life, full of joy

It's natural to be heartbroken.

landlordhell · 02/04/2026 08:09

I am so sorry for your loss. I am dreading g it when my little one goes. I also have grown up chn but I think your mum made a mistake telling you like that. She could have waited til you got home. Take care and try to focus until you get home to those who can support you. 💐

EmeraldDreams73 · 02/04/2026 08:18

What a gorgeous boy. I'm so sorry, OP. They break our hearts when they have to go. Thinking of you. 💐

mumstheword1x · 02/04/2026 06:54

My Milo xxx

If you're silly for crying then how stupid am I? I don't even know your dog but immediately got runny eyes when I saw this photo! What a handsome dog. Dogs are so important in life. For most of us that have them, you understand that because they are so needy, they become an intrinsic part if your life. Losing them is heartbreaking and so difficult to comprehend. Take care of yourself.

HatStickBoots · 02/04/2026 08:22

So sorry for the loss of your precious little Milo. I agree with other pps and no time is ever long enough and the pain we go through is the price of loving them but it’s a price we will always be willing to pay. It’s ok to grieve him Lovely ❤️

NigellaDelia · 02/04/2026 08:22

I'm so very, very sorry

I've never owned a dog myself but I used to walk my elderly neighbours westie and I was devastated when she passed

Milo was so beautiful and so loved

Take good care of yourself ~ sending you love and kind thoughts xxx

lovescats3 · 02/04/2026 08:30

Sorry for your loss of Milo, he had a happy life with you and your family so treasure your memories

Additup · 02/04/2026 08:34

I'm so very sorry OP. You're definitely not being silly. I often still think of our first family cat years after she died.

The loss you feel after the death of a much loved pet is deep ❤️

Mary46 · 02/04/2026 08:35

Sorry to hear that op lovely photo. Very sad.

ItsPickleRick · 02/04/2026 08:35

I’m so sorry OP.

We had to do the same last week, it’s heartbreaking. I’m so sorry for the loss of your lovely boy x
