Those of you with big dogs, do you ever look them in the eye and think “you’re a wolf”?

No- because they're not.

RebelMoon · 29/03/2026 15:43

Errr...no.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 29/03/2026 15:45

No.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 29/03/2026 15:45

No. But I totally do look at my dog (who is a terrier) and think 'you'd manage just fine without me wouldn't you?' when she's just killed and eaten a rabbit.

YorkshireGoldie · 29/03/2026 15:49

It’s not entirely inaccurate what you have said, dogs are descendants from (now extinct) wolves

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 29/03/2026 15:49

No, I tell mine he’s a teddy bear.

He agrees. Then he carries on acting like a teddy bear.

LaurieFairyCake · 29/03/2026 15:50

I mean not when I look at the smallest one, barely makes it into dog category 🤦‍♀️ but baby, yes. Insecurely attached chaos causer, yep. Mad nutjob who takes a fancy to strangers and tries to go off with them, yep.

ChequerToRed · 29/03/2026 15:50

Why just big dogs? All dogs share 99% of their DNA with grey wolves, from malamutes to teacup yorkies. The difference is 1% or less, but even such a small percentage is big difference. The domestication of wolves keeps getting pushed further and further back as new evidence emerges, current thinking is that they’ve been with us for as long as 40,000 years. That’s a bloody long time and a hell of a lot of selective breeding.

Chicken Dinosaur GIF

Is it like when people who keep chickens go and collect eggs they look them in the eye and say “you’re a dinosaur”?

Arlanymor · 29/03/2026 15:51

I remember watching a really interesting documentary on how dogs are not descended from wolves - they just share a common ancestor. Much in the same way that we're not descended from neanderthals, but also share a common ancestor. I will have to trawl YouTube to find it again as it was so interesting. My mum loves wolves, she would happily do a Mowgli if she could.

Now, I would actually do this, just to give the chickens a confidence boost

user58643296 · 29/03/2026 15:53

No, but I do look at mine occasionally and feel glad that I've made it worth their while to not eat me.

Most modern humans have Neanderthal ancestors alongside their Homo Sapiens ancestors. Modern humans are literally descended from Neanderthals.

😃 I have the same, mine looks and acts like the most adorable teddy bear. Definitely no wolves here.

ginasevern · 29/03/2026 16:05

I remember seeing wolves for the first time as a child and being so amazed at how much like Alsatian dogs they looked (to my young eyes anyway). I wanted to get into their enclosure and cuddle them. My Dad spent ages telling me about the difference and timescales of evolution etc, but I wasn't convinced.

minieggsrule · 29/03/2026 16:06

No. Wolves are smart, cunning and self sufficient. One of my big dogs has just scared himself by farting as he jumped onto the couch.

Moltenpink · 29/03/2026 16:07

I do watch my lab ripping a bone to shreds and I think wow, I’m so glad you decide not to eat me

Have you ever seen a chicken with t rex arms.....

My grey Ethel is like the raptor out of jurassic Park!

dinbin · 29/03/2026 16:11

Only if they are malamutes

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 29/03/2026 16:18

I have a little fluffy dog. When my tiny fluff ball caught kennel cough, the vet shoved a thermometer up ddog’s bum. She made a noise that for the first time, made me believe that she might actually be part wolf.
