Those of you with big dogs, do you ever look them in the eye and think “you’re a wolf”?

No, there was interbreeding, but no direct descent. Our lineages diverged over 550,000 years ago and there is no evidence of Neanderthal DNA mitochondrial linkages with modern humans. But don't just take my word for it, the Smithsonian set it out fairly well: https://humanorigins.si.edu/evidence/genetics/ancient-dna-and-neanderthals

If you re-read the whole article you will see that what it is saying is there is no evidence of mitochondrial DNA inherited from Neanderthals. That is there is no unbroken female line of descent. However Europeans do have a very small percentage of Neanderthal DNA reflecting some interbreeding.

Erm I have and I said both of those things.

AcrossthePond55 · 29/03/2026 18:45

I don't think it, but I'm sure my Dachsie does. In fact I'm sure he'd be the type to say "I'm descended from wolves, don't you know?" the same way some people brag about being a x10000 removed descendent of Alfred the Great.

He already enters a room with that "Don't you know who I am?" attitude.

Catladywithacat · 29/03/2026 18:46

No I have a big “scary” dog she is as daft and precious as anything, currently in her pink dressing gown having a nap

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 29/03/2026 18:47

I don't but others have seen our husky and thought he was a wolf. They see our terrier on the other hand and think he is a toy. In reality it's the other way around.

Is it like when people who keep chickens go and collect eggs they look them in the eye and say “you’re a dinosaur”?

Edited

We used to keep chickens and looking at them I often felt that if they were the size of humans and we were the size of chickens they would certainly be fearsome predators.
(And I once saw one running around having speared a rat on its beak. I don’t think it knew what to do with it, though. )

You'd have to ask the genealogists. I'm not an expert, but as far as I know there are lots of variables such as introgression, steribility/survivalism and, as you say, issues with viability due to things such as chromosomal incompatibly. It's a complex area.

The Smithsonian doesn't appear to be saying there is no Neanderthal DNA in modern Homo Sapiens, though, so presumably the offspring, viable, did pass some on.

From the article you cited:
"Neanderthals are known to contribute up to 1-4% of the genomes of non-African modern humans, depending on what region of the word your ancestors come from, and modern humans who lived about 40,000 years ago have been found to have up to 6-9% Neanderthal DNA (Fu et al., 2015). Because Neanderthals likely evolve outside of Africa (no Neanderthal fossils have been found in Africa to date) it was thought that there would be no trace of Neanderthal DNA in African modern humans. However, a study in 2020 demonstrated that there is Neanderthal DNA in all African Homo sapiens (Chen at el., 2020). "

I wish I did have a wolf, I love wolves!

But they don’t make good pets so I’ve had to make do with a golden retriever.

WiddlinDiddlin · 29/03/2026 19:05

I do when they're little puppies. Hellbent on biting and chewing everything and not yet formed a solid and mutually understanding relationship with me.

As adults, no. The thing that makes dogs, dogs... is that they want to be with us, prefer us to their own species, will seek help, attention and food from us. It is that which triggered the changes in phsyiology and why we have dogs with floppy ears, curled over tails, coloured patches, blazes, different head shapes etc.

That is lacking in wolves and is why wolves are still wolves. Hand reared wolves do not turn into dogs, they grow into very confused wolves and at times of stress or high excitement will absolutely revert to wolf behaviour. The same can be said of high content wolf-dogs too.

I mean, do you ever look your DH in the eye and think I have an ape living in my house?

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

SwedishSayna · 29/03/2026 16:04

Most modern humans have Neanderthal ancestors alongside their Homo Sapiens ancestors. Modern humans are literally descended from Neanderthals.

Don’t we all have around 3% Neanderthal DNA?

Mind you I often think that some people have quite a bit more….

BestDIL · 29/03/2026 19:17

Definitely not!!

OP do you look yourself in the mirror and think yep, I’m an ape 🦍 in this house.

No. But I totally do look at my dog (who is a terrier) and think 'you'd manage just fine without me wouldn't you?' when she's just killed and eaten a rabbit.

😂

I had a dog that was 50% wolf. I was six, and he was my first dog. He came to Europe from Kazakhstan—the best and most intelligent dog I ever knew.

I tell my cats they’re lions/ tigers all the time.

I have a Miniature Garden Tiger and a Miniature Sofa Lion. The latter is really enjoying watching Big Cats 24/7 with us, and the lions' social behaviour and goofiness when relaxing is really reminiscent of their smaller cousins.

Twoboysandabengal · 29/03/2026 19:27

Dogs are dirty animals, and in no way should be kept indoors, roaming around freely! 🤢

Isn't there something about only being allowed to own a wolf dog with a maximum percentage of wolf in it in the UK? I met a wolf dog while out on a walk once and that's what her owner said (while she was busy choosing her own adventure and ignoring his commmands).

LittleMyLabyrinth · 29/03/2026 19:32

They might look the same but wolves are VERY different. They dgaf about us whereas dogs have literally evolved to communicate with us and love us.

No, I tell mine he’s a teddy bear.

He agrees. Then he carries on acting like a teddy bear.

I call mine a goat.. she bloody butts into everything!! 🤦‍♀️

Photo for attention!!

I have a rescue dog from Romania,he is a Carpathian Mountain Dog and he looks wolf like, especially when he sits at the top of the stairs looking down at me!

I love him to bits.

A couple of those tried to kidnap DS2 when we were hiking in the mountains in Romania. Honestly- they were making a determined effort to herd him back to their farmstead. They came up to his shoulder. Either they really like children, or they spotted latent shepherding potential in him.

Kouklamo · 29/03/2026 19:36

ChequerToRed · 29/03/2026 15:52

Now, I would actually do this, just to give the chickens a confidence boost

Hey the chickens survived what killed the dinosaurs - I reckon that makes them more badass😁
