Those of you with big dogs, do you ever look them in the eye and think “you’re a wolf”?

They're such a long way off from the wolves from which they're descended. Much like we are so far away from the apes our distant ancestors once were. My own 42kg dog is the least wolf-like creature imaginable. He's currently snoozing on the sofa making sure his paw is touching me at all times.

Wolves are not extinct.

The shared ancestor of modern wolves and dogs was a now extinct type of wolf

Indeed. Humans and chimps share 98.8% DNA, but the differences are significant all the same.

And don't we have over 50% of the same genes as bananas?

About that. I read we are more closely related to avocados though

No, but my tiny, dainty, beautiful rescue cat is the most ruthless and enthusiastic hunter I've ever had. Her success rate is high. I kind of hate it, but we live rurally and there are rats everywhere in summer and late autumn. Our property backs onto smallholdings and they eat the grain, so at least the cats serve an ecological function. I often look at her and imagine how lethal she'd be if she was the size of a tiger. Sometimes when I'm petting her she likes to mischeviously grab my hand and bunny-kick it with her back legs, looking at me with a real glint in her eye like she knows its naughty - I suppose her ancestors would have had my arm off!

"I will take hold of this cable and leave the plug ,hidden, on the floor , prong side up for you to stand on"

(Our cats talk with a Russian accent which is weird as they are completely Essex )

I love it when cats do that! Bloody painful though.

We had a gorgeous and very large white German Shepherd named Gandalf growing up. He was the biggest wimp there ever was. He was the runt of his litter but massive. So good natured and gentle.

The whippet asleep next to me is totally spoiled by me (& he isn't even my dog!) but definitely not wolf like, he needs a coat on in winter! Also hates the rain and pigeons freak him out. He is also another one who has scared himself with his own farts.

yes, when I tuck my Labrador up on the sofa with her special blanket, I am reminded of her descendants the great wolves

I do however often think that if our cats were as big as dogs they would 100% eat us

Oh, absolutely!

One of my cats when I was a kid used to do that.
When you wanted her to stop you had to say awww then say her name in a really sad voice and she'd stop and push your hand away with a look on her face that screamed oh fuck off then you mardy arse.

Branleuse · 29/03/2026 17:23

No, but one of mine is secretly a coyote

Nopenousername · 29/03/2026 17:25

Mine ate my grandmother and disguised himself in her clothes. Does that make him a wolve 🤷‍♀️

Most modern humans have Neanderthal ancestors alongside their Homo Sapiens ancestors. Modern humans are literally descended from Neanderthals.

No, there was interbreeding, but no direct descent. Our lineages diverged over 550,000 years ago and there is no evidence of Neanderthal DNA mitochondrial linkages with modern humans. But don't just take my word for it, the Smithsonian set it out fairly well: https://humanorigins.si.edu/evidence/genetics/ancient-dna-and-neanderthals

Wolfdogs, which are breed from a mix of dog and wolf are being bred in America but I think they are stll illegal in the UK.

LadyWiddiothethird · 29/03/2026 17:31

I have a rescue dog from Romania,he is a Carpathian Mountain Dog and he looks wolf like, especially when he sits at the top of the stairs looking down at me!

I love him to bits.

Edited

They are legal in the UK if they are a few generations removed (I think it's 3 or 4) so a dog could have a great great grandparent that was a wolf.

I certainly look more like an avocado than a banana that's for sure... sadly.

maudelovesharold · 29/03/2026 17:35

I don’t have a dog, but I do sometimes look at my gorgeous cat, who is quite leonine and somewhat unpredictable, and think ‘if you were the size of a lion, you’d definitely kill me’!

StormyLandCloud · 29/03/2026 17:35

Yes, as she’s one of the breeds who have t been messed around with too much … but she’s as daft as a brush

minieggsrule · 29/03/2026 16:06

No. Wolves are smart, cunning and self sufficient. One of my big dogs has just scared himself by farting as he jumped onto the couch.

😂

pinkyredrose · 29/03/2026 17:38

Sometimes I look at my cat and think, wow I've got a mini tiger in my house! 😁

PuggyPuggyPuggy · 29/03/2026 17:39

I used to be able to make my dog howl if I said "Oooooh" in just the right pitch. He's a pug cross, couldn't look less like a wolf if he tried 😂

Glitchymn1 · 29/03/2026 17:41

No, but I seriously considered a hybrid wolf dog for a few hours 😆 lovely looking dogs! But I’d be out of my depth!

GentleSheep · 29/03/2026 17:48

Well, I have a cat and sometimes think I am sooo glad you're not a panther!

chatelai · 29/03/2026 17:48

The chicken/other birds/dinosaur thing, yes, absolutely.

I call my friend's GS Wolf Dog , just between her and I as a matter of respect as she gets a certain look in her eye sometimes and in a fair fight, she'd win.

Also referring to cats as tigers, guilty yer honour. Have never referred to a guineapig as a capybara, yet.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 29/03/2026 17:50

I call birds Dinosaurs.
