Those of you with big dogs, do you ever look them in the eye and think “you’re a wolf”?

I mean, do you ever look your DH in the eye and think I have an ape living in my house?

raspberrieswithchocolate · 29/03/2026 16:46

@NorwichMom oh I love your tiny wolf ❤️

Noodge · 29/03/2026 16:47

Mine is part wolf
And has many wolf like traits.
I know she isn't one
But occasionally am grateful for our friendship.

SabbatWheel · 29/03/2026 16:49

No.That would be like looking at my horse and thinking ‘Are you a zebra?’
Similar in one way, but very different in others 😀

I have actually been stopped before now and asked if he’s a wolf cub 🤣

It’s not entirely inaccurate what you have said, dogs are descendants from (now extinct) wolves

Wolves are not extinct.

Twiglets1 · 29/03/2026 16:50

My Labrador puppy makes the same noises I’ve heard lion cubs make on wildlife programmes.

So he’s my little cub … part lion, part wolf, part baby.

Wolves are not extinct.

Pleistocene wolves are.

notacooldad · 29/03/2026 16:54

I look at mine and say ' you're just a bay- be'!! 😆 ( tik tok style)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/03/2026 16:54

yes, when I tuck my Labrador up on the sofa with her special blanket, I am reminded of her descendants the great wolves

I do however often think that if our cats were as big as dogs they would 100% eat us

bugalugs45 · 29/03/2026 16:54

My Rottweiler is the softest lump you could ever care to meet , I honestly think he’d starve death if he had to hunt his own dinner , he is very much domesticated

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 29/03/2026 16:54

The resemblance between a Dalmatian and a wolf isn't all that great, and no I haven't.

Domestic dogs and wolves have a common ancestor and can interbreed, but neither current species is descended from the other as far as I know, any more than any of the Great Apes is descended from Homo Sapiens or vice versa.

In fairness, yes sometimes 😂

BertSymptom · 29/03/2026 16:56

Fair question OP because as a cat owner I often look at my overweight house cat go into wild mode and think “you’re just a shrunken tiger aren’t you”. Maybe it’s different for dog owners as they’re far more domesticated? I get it though.

Dabralor · 29/03/2026 16:56

Yes - my dogs are a pack of housewolves roaming about.

I actually argue with my husband over this; he argues that real wolves would kill and eat my labradors instantly. Whereas I like to believe that they would detect an ancient kinship and live as friends all curled up in the cave.

I do realise this is delusional but it is a happy thought 🤩

Letsgoforaskip · 29/03/2026 16:56

There was a programme about this in the 90s called The Wolf in Your Living Room. I think it’s still on YouTube.

Is it like when people who keep chickens go and collect eggs they look them in the eye and say “you’re a dinosaur”?

Edited

This is a true masterpiece. Particularly the middle fingers 🤣🤣

I have been wondering recently whether a T-Rex would taste like chicken!

Hatty65 · 29/03/2026 16:59

No, although I occasionally look him in the eye and say, 'You're a barking arsehole'.

The vet told him he was 'a pathetic baby' last time he was there. He was not brave and she wasn't doing anything except looking at a lump on his ear.

TreeDudette · 29/03/2026 17:00

Ha ha ha, mine would literally expire if he had to spend 24hrs fending for himself. No morning allergy pill, no fresh water and grain free food, no snackies, no soft blanket on the sofa, no cuddles at bedtime… he’s just a big old baby!

Emilesgran · 29/03/2026 17:00

ChequerToRed · 29/03/2026 15:50

Why just big dogs? All dogs share 99% of their DNA with grey wolves, from malamutes to teacup yorkies. The difference is 1% or less, but even such a small percentage is big difference. The domestication of wolves keeps getting pushed further and further back as new evidence emerges, current thinking is that they’ve been with us for as long as 40,000 years. That’s a bloody long time and a hell of a lot of selective breeding.

Indeed. Humans and chimps share 98.8% DNA, but the differences are significant all the same.

And don't we have over 50% of the same genes as bananas?

(Fellow mum to a small, fluffy terrier here)

iloveeverykindofcat · 29/03/2026 17:01

No, but my tiny, dainty, beautiful rescue cat is the most ruthless and enthusiastic hunter I've ever had. Her success rate is high. I kind of hate it, but we live rurally and there are rats everywhere in summer and late autumn. Our property backs onto smallholdings and they eat the grain, so at least the cats serve an ecological function. I often look at her and imagine how lethal she'd be if she was the size of a tiger. Sometimes when I'm petting her she likes to mischeviously grab my hand and bunny-kick it with her back legs, looking at me with a real glint in her eye like she knows its naughty - I suppose her ancestors would have had my arm off!

Yes I do this all the time.

Me too, they are a bunch of mini dinosaurs. And I reckon my cockerel Stanley could take a T-Rex! 😂
