Would you be tired after a one hour walk?

Took my Ddog on a walk around a fairly large lake yesterday morning , it took around an hour
By the afternoon I was tired and yawning lots-4 pm ish. Last night I fell asleep around 9.30
I mean, I could be coming down with something but I don’t think so.

Is this normal? Late 40’s, part time job, one Primary aged child

Im in my 60s. I wouldn’t get tired unless it was big hills or very fast walking. I think sometimes you can feel more tired than others without an obvious reason.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 28/03/2026 19:45

Your nutritional status, what you had eaten that day, the quality of your sleep, your physical strength/state of recovery from other activities on previous days, your core strength, the ambient temperature and weather conditions, whether you are currently having an immune response to infection, your monthly cycle, levels of hydration and intensity of activity all have an effect upon how you physically respond to an hour of physical exertion. There's also hayfever, pollution leves and any underlying conditions, along with the quality and support/gait and biomechanics affecting it.

So of course it's possible to find a normally unproblematic activity particularly tiring.

Wallywobbles · 28/03/2026 21:34

If you had a carb heavy lunch afternoon tiredness would be normal.

SillyQuail · 28/03/2026 21:38

I feel like this after minimal exercise if I haven't eaten enough. If I eat more I'm fine again but I often don't register hunger as hunger, just overwhelming fatigue.

Mumofyellows · 28/03/2026 21:41

I walk my dogs for an hour and a half before I start work most mornings and find it energises me for the day. I’m 44. I don’t think that is what has made you tired…

Sartre · 28/03/2026 21:46

Nope but then I regularly walk 20k+ steps so it’s normal, I’m 33. You might be getting sick.

Notsosweetcaroline · 28/03/2026 21:49

I’m mid fifties and no, not remotely,

I think it depends on fitness levels and weight.

FoolOfShips · 28/03/2026 21:50

No. I don't do any sports or gym exercise but I walk a lot - I'm good for about 5 hours before I get tired.

It does sound like you are coming down with something, unless you are getting over something? I've had a couple of bouts of Covid in the past, and afterwards I was tired walking 20 minutes, and had to build up to it again.

If neither of these apply, it would be worth getting a check up at the doctors - could be a deficiency of something, and/or an underlying health issue.

ETA I'm in my 50s for context.

PeonyBulb · 28/03/2026 21:51

I don’t used to but since the menopause I get really tired

PeonyBulb · 28/03/2026 21:51

Didn’t

Indigosky37 · 29/03/2026 07:21

I’m 37, I wouldn’t find an hour stroll around a lake tiring at the time, but by 4pm after a full days work I would be tired. And on work days i am asleep by 9.30-10 and up at 5am. I don’t think this is particularly unusual.

Girasoli · 29/03/2026 07:57

I wouldn't no but I've always liked walking, I can't drive and sometimes it is more convenient to walk places than follow the bus routes. I also like to go for long walks just for fresh air (I wfh/from an office so 9-5 I am usually stuck indoors).

I'm 38.

Gremlins101 · 29/03/2026 08:11

See how you are tomorrow

Gremlins101 · 29/03/2026 08:11

See how you are tomorrow

... meant to add, no it wouldn't make me tired, but if the day was otherwise v busy then maybe

Londonrach1 · 29/03/2026 08:27

Depends what else I've done in the day And if end of busy week. One hour walk on its own is nothing...we walked three hours yesterday trying the dodge the rain, but if you cleaned the kitchen, toilet and done 1000 other tasks or and been rushed off your feet all week work wise totally understandable why you tried. Listen to your body and rest

Spaghettea · 29/03/2026 08:35

Not at all. No sore feet, nothing. I'm in my 50's.
I walk most of my errands and supermarket trips and go jogging twice a week. Minimum of 14k steps a day.

Empress13 · 29/03/2026 08:38

No not unless it was uphill all the way! I do daily one hour walks with my boy and don’t feel knackered and I’m a lot older than you. Yes you could be coming down with something

PerfectPairofBoots · 29/03/2026 08:47

Sounds normal to me, but I get up early so 9.30 is my usual bedtime and I feel quite sleepy from late afternoon.
I walk around an hour a day, I love the relaxed and sleepy feeling afterwards and it helps me sleep well.

youbizarrehorse · 29/03/2026 08:51

I have just started trying to walk for an hour every day for the last couple of weeks. It used to be a normal occurrence for me. I wouldn’t say it makes me tired in the sense of yawning, more of a slight overall weakness or weariness. But it soon passes.

LieLowLulu · 29/03/2026 12:05

No, absolutely not. (And I'm decades older- late 60s.)

I walk for an hour most days, often including some hills.

It depends if you'd lost hours of sleep or had a frantically busy day after the walk.

Maybe you need some blood tests?

Iron? Thyroid? Vitamin D? Glucose levels?

If you're in your 40s and having a stroll with your dog for an hour and are tired, that's not right.

But it depends on what you mean by 'tired'. There is physically tired and sleepy tired.

And of course if you're fit, a healthy weight and exercise anyway.

MrsMop2026 · 29/03/2026 13:20

It depends on the person, I would be but I am disabled. My husband wouldn’t be.

have you had your bloods check lately?

Beachtastic · 29/03/2026 13:27

There's "tired" and "tired." Some movement is soothing and leaves us sleepy because it activates the parasympathetic system. A gentle walk is one of those.

CaptainMyCaptain · 29/03/2026 13:29

MasterBeth · 28/03/2026 09:22

No, a one hour walk wouldn't register with me as being of any significance.

Me neither. Just an ordinary dog walk and I'm 70+.

JadeWriter · 29/03/2026 17:55

Hiya, im late 40's, work full time, with a high schooler.
I wouldn't class myself as really fit, but have been on holidays, walking 10k a day. I don't think you should be that tired after an hours walk. My dad is 80 years old, and is walking his dogs for hours a day, and seems ok. Definitely get yourself checked out.

bugalugs45 · 29/03/2026 17:58

I walk over an hour every day with my dog so no, but tbh I go to bed earlier than most . Last week I genuinely was ready for bed at 7pm, and the next day I woke up with a rotten cold so yes usually is a sign of getting sick for me
