Took my Ddog on a walk around a fairly large lake yesterday morning , it took around an hour
By the afternoon I was tired and yawning lots-4 pm ish. Last night I fell asleep around 9.30
I mean, I could be coming down with something but I don’t think so.

Is this normal? Late 40’s, part time job, one Primary aged child

I read the title as wank 🫣

EmbarrassmentLovesCompany · 28/03/2026 09:37

Yesterday, absolutely. Because im ill, work is a nightmare, and Ive been parenting solo for the last 3 weeks.

Normally, no.

AreYouBrandNew · 28/03/2026 09:38

As pp’s have said, the walk would be fine but would depend on how busy the week had been and how well I’d been sleeping. Do you mean your muscles/legs felt tired? I’d start to feel that more at 15k+ steps

Meteorite87 · 28/03/2026 09:38

I would be tired after that due to anemia. Have you had your iron levels checked recently?

TotHappy · 28/03/2026 09:38

Not usually but Sometimes being outside, even not walking per se but just pottering about makes me extra tired. I think a lot of it is wind, if you're bracing/battering against that. I especially notice it after the beach so probably a combination of salt air/wind/difficult underfoot (sand).

hahabahbag · 28/03/2026 09:41

Depends on terrain too, a flat walk around the park on tarmac, no and I’m older than you, in the Welsh hills i can see across the water with mud, styles etc to deal with perhaps.

Domino211 · 28/03/2026 09:42

Majority of the time no not at all, I walk my dog about 1.5 hours most mornings so I’m used to it. Occasionally though I find it really knackering! I put it down to hormones or a bad thyroid day (underactive and levels have been up and down last year)

MyDeftDuck · 28/03/2026 09:45

Have you been doing anything in the days prior to the one hour walk and re you properly hydrated? I ask this because heavy exertion can knock me off my feet free a couple of days and not drinking enough water makes me feel crap.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 28/03/2026 09:50

I run for an hour a day (often with the dog) and I've found that some days it's easy and I come back bouncing and ready to do more stuff, and some days I am dragging my carcass back, wondering if I'm going to make it and I come in, roll into the shower and have to sit down.

It doesn't even seem to be a presage of illness either, it's very random. So maybe you are sickening for something or maybe you just haven't eaten a lot over the last few days to fuel you?

usedtobeaylis · 28/03/2026 09:50

Not generally but sometimes it would take more out of me than usual eg if I was unwell, mentally exhausted, pre-menstrual, particularly struck with hayfever etc.

PingoDome · 28/03/2026 09:52

Are you the one who usually walks the dog, and are the walks usually shorter than that (I'm guessing the dog isn't a spaniel if so)?

If tiredness after a hour's walk is unusual for you, then it suggests you might be coming down with something.

johnd2 · 28/03/2026 09:52

Yes at the moment as I had a nasty cold last week, for some reason I always seem to feel exhausted for a week or so soon after I get "better" from a nasty cold (ie the sore throat, sneezing and runny nose finish)
I'm not sure if it's because I'm run down and depleted or whether the germs are moving on and going somewhere else but it's a real annoyance!

I'd say the walk relaxed you.

powershowerforanhour · 28/03/2026 09:19

Yes. I'm very unfit though.

Same here. I couldn’t actually physically manage it myself - I’m struggling building up to more than 20 minutes’ walk a day in one go and I hate every second of it and come home knackered, in pain and in a very bad mood.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 28/03/2026 09:53

I have quite bad insomnia and if I sleep badly, I feel as though I've got flu the next day. I slow right down and walking any distance takes a real effort. I generally start to doze off whatever I'm doing in the late afternoon. So I would say your problem is lack of sleep, rather than lack of fitness.

HappyToSmile · 28/03/2026 09:53

Generally, definitely not, but then I walk many more miles than that on a normal day. Being outside definitely tires you out more than sitting on a sofa though!!
Who normally walks the dog? Is an hour's walk normal for you daily? Have you eaten properly in the last day? How was your sleep? There are many reasons that may cause tiredness I guess!

BIossomtoes · 28/03/2026 09:54

I walk the dogs for an hour every day, it’s completely normal for me so it doesn’t make me tired.

ChangeAgainAgainAgain · 28/03/2026 09:55

I'm in my 50s, overweight and unfit, and I wouldn't feel tired in that way after an hours walk. Maybe some tired muscles if it was particularly strenuous, but not tired in myself overall IYSWIM.

NormasArse · 28/03/2026 09:56

No, but was it windy on your walk?

For some reason, windy walks make me more tired.

Paaseitjes · 28/03/2026 09:56

I'd be ready for a sit down and cup of tea after, but certainly not tired all afternoon

Fundays12 · 28/03/2026 09:57

It depends how i was feeling generally no but if I was tired anyway yes.

IDrinkTeaAllTheTime · 28/03/2026 10:08

Generally no, but I walk everywhere and live in a place with lots of hills, so I’m used to walking long distances because I enjoy it.

However, I started getting extremely tired about 6 months ago after walking. I mean extreme exhaustion where I could barely keep my eyes open during the day and would be out of breath and my legs felt weak after walking just my usual dog walking route round the local park. I would walk upstairs and be dripping in sweat, so not usual for me at all. I got my blood checked and I was low in B12 and folate. They put me on folic acid and all of the horrible symptoms have stopped.

When I look back, I can see there were times when I was getting gradually more tired after walking but just put it down to it being a long day, stressful week, or that time of the month, etc.

It could just be a one off, and it’s perfectly normal to feel a bit tired sometimes for whatever reason, but if it continues or you notice it getting worse, I would say go and get your blood checked. It’s honestly incredible that something as simple as low folate can make you feel so ill. At times, I genuinely felt as though I had been drugged or that the energy was being physically drained from my body.

Nitgel · 28/03/2026 10:09

I would be cream crackered.

HarlanCobenDogshit · 28/03/2026 10:11

Hmmm. I walk that daily with my dog. Mid 50's and find it makes me more energised to crack on with other stuff once I'm back home.

Do you often take long walks? Maybe you need to build up your stamina?

FlaggedParrot · 28/03/2026 10:11

I'm tired just walking to the letterbox.
But in all seriousness, yes I would. I am not fit. I am on the thin side but never exercise. So as unfit as I am I do get tired from very little and puffed out from doing just about anything.
