Would you be tired after a one hour walk?

Took my Ddog on a walk around a fairly large lake yesterday morning , it took around an hour
By the afternoon I was tired and yawning lots-4 pm ish. Last night I fell asleep around 9.30
I mean, I could be coming down with something but I don’t think so.

Is this normal? Late 40’s, part time job, one Primary aged child

No, I can walk like that with ease. The only time I find I'm tired after a usual stint of activity is when I've got something brewing. I had a two hour morning walk on Thursday and felt a bit tired in the afternoon, have just come out with a cold. So I'm taking it easy now. Maybe you've got a bug, if you feel unusually tired?

ErrolTheDragon · 28/03/2026 11:05

It’s an odd ‘AIBU’, it’s not unreasonable to feel tired for some unknown reason. But being tired by a one hour walk doesn’t seem normal for anyone tolerably fit and healthy, which I guess is what you meant.

I’m 65 and currently have a heavy cold but walked for over an hour yesterday and Friday without being unduly tired until the evening.

PersephonePomegranate · 28/03/2026 11:09

Not usually, no, but it would depend on how well I was feeling, what had been going on, how well I'd slept - a whole host of variables.

What's normal for you? Do you usually feel tired from the dog walk?

Pricelessadvice · 28/03/2026 11:57

Yes but I have narcolepsy so I’m always tired/sleepy.

NimbleHiker · 28/03/2026 12:02

A 1 hour walk can leave me energised just after i have finished my period. However i do feel tired after an hour's walk when my period is due. My energy levels always drop when my period is due.

JetFlight · 28/03/2026 12:20

Not normally, no. I’m tired today and a 40min walk this morning has left me more tired. I can usually spend most of a day out walking and not feel tired and I’ll regularly go for an hours walk.

Emmz1510 · 28/03/2026 18:20

No and I’m not very fit, but it would depend on what else I’d done that day.

Devongirl1983 · 28/03/2026 18:24

We do a long walk most weekends (40’s, two kids) and we’d only be tired if we’ve done about 4 plus hours of proper walking (hills) or been out all day running about.

An hour walk and none of us would feel tired at all (and you shouldn’t if you’ve got a general good fitness level). As others have said, sounds more like you could be coming down with something?

You definately shouldn’t be tired after an hour unless you have health conditions.

Barney16 · 28/03/2026 18:24

It would depend if I went faster than usual. I usually walk everyday and some days I could happily have a little sleep. Usually that's because I have gone faster/more hills/ generally tired from what I have done earlier in the day.

Nomedshere · 28/03/2026 18:26

No. Im 67 and do a 6 mile walk daily

BebbanburgIsMine · 28/03/2026 18:26

I would never manage an hour’s walk! I’d be beyond shattered by that. I do have Pernicious Anaemia, Type 2 Arthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis though.

If it’s unusual for you OP, then there’s no harm in seeing your GP.

OnlyHasEyesForLoki · 28/03/2026 18:26

That does sound unusual - perhaps you are coming down with something?

MyThreeWords · 28/03/2026 18:26

Perhaps it relaxed you, rather than tiring you, so that you were able to achieve the sleep that your body had needed for days.

It doesn't sound fitness related.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 28/03/2026 18:27

Early into the pandemic, I came back to work talking about my weekend to colleagues who'd spent the entire time trapped indoors with multiple toddlers. They hated me when I said, "I don't know why I'm so exhausted, I've only been playing video games all weekend".

But it was COVID, obviously.

1000StrawberryLollies · 28/03/2026 18:29

No. I went on a one hour walk today with some very steep bits. I wasn't at all tired afterwards. I'm 54 and work full time in a full-on job. Annoyingly I'd been up since 6 too!

NoSoupForU · 28/03/2026 18:41

Are you usually tired after a walk?

I tend to find exercise gives me more energy.

ParmaVioletTea · 28/03/2026 18:43

You really need to attend to your fitness. That is not normal.

TheChosenTwo · 28/03/2026 18:48

No, not in and of itself. But some days I tend to feel really tired later on if I’ve not done much and been a bit sluggish. So if I did an hours walk in the morning and nothing for the rest of the day I wouldn’t rule out closing my eyes for half an hour on the sofa later on.
Generally I don’t sleep more than 4-5 hours a night, always broken too, so I’ll take any opportunity for a bit of shut eye!

Sarahpainting · 28/03/2026 18:48

I would be grateful for a sit down and a coffee but then carry on with my day, I do this with a friend twice a week I’m 69 she’s 78

MildlyAnnoyed · 28/03/2026 18:53

I Wouldn’t have thought it was usual to be so tired after a 1 hour walk. Did you do other things as well or had a particularly busy week? I took the dog out for 2 hours this morning & I’ve just got back from a 90 minute walk. I’ve done very little else today & I’m not particularly tired but I’ll go to bed early as always (I’m most definitely not a night owl).

Enrichetta · 28/03/2026 18:53

I’m just having a 20-minute break after an intense one hour workout. After that I’ll be doing some fairly heavy gardening. Planning to play pickleball later.

I’m in my 70s. Use it or lose it.

MummyWillow1 · 28/03/2026 19:26

Fresh air always makes me sleepy. If it is a ‘one off’ occurrence I wouldn’t worry, if you’ve had a few not great nights sleep and a busy week then a nanna nap on a weekend isn’t unusual.

Scarecrow16 · 28/03/2026 19:28

I was getting tired doing the same - healthy bmi. Had to nap afterwards. It really bothered me. HRT solved the issue.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 28/03/2026 19:28

No, but I walk an hour and a half before work (includes walking the school run) and then am on my feet at work, walk an hour back to school pick up and half an hour home.

SpaceRaccoon · 28/03/2026 19:30

Not an hour, no, but I'm quite fitness-focussed.
