Would you be tired after a one hour walk?

Took my Ddog on a walk around a fairly large lake yesterday morning , it took around an hour
By the afternoon I was tired and yawning lots-4 pm ish. Last night I fell asleep around 9.30
I mean, I could be coming down with something but I don’t think so.

Is this normal? Late 40’s, part time job, one Primary aged child

I'm unfit but can normally walk a lot without getting tired. I would get tired at this time of year though because of hay fever. It sits in my eyes and makes me feel sleepy!

DollopOfFun · 28/03/2026 10:12

I walk an hour to my office, so I'd be up shit creek if I needed a nap when I got there 😁

SatsumaDog · 28/03/2026 10:13

I wouldn’t be too worried about it as a one off, but if the fatigue is unusual and it continues or
worsens, it might be worth investigating further.

An hour’s walk wouldn’t make me tired on its own, but combined with other factors, it could.

Tacohill · 28/03/2026 10:14

A 1 hour walk usually gives me more energy in the day but I sleep better in the night.

It entirely depends on your fitness levels and what you normally do.
It also depends if it was flat or hilly and what else you did that day.

Are you not the one who usually does the dog walking?
Either the dog regularly has 1 hour walks but it’s not you who does them or you usually only do short walks.

likelysuspect · 28/03/2026 10:14

No I wouldnt be tired, an hours walk would be 3 miles if walking at 3 mph but walking a dog around a lake you're probably walking at about 2mph so a slow stroll

You're not unreasonable to be tired, and not not unreasonable either! Its not really an AIBU query

Its just an observation about how your body has responded. And in any case it may be nothing to do with the walk, its just coincidence that you're tired today

TMFF · 28/03/2026 10:15

No, I often take my dogs to the forest for a couple of hours and don't get that tired, even though I don't consider myself particularly fit due to menopause and under-active thyroid.

mindutopia · 28/03/2026 10:15

I have cancer. Yes, I’d be tired after a 1 hour walk, but not in a sleepy tired, yawning and ready for bed sort of way. In a fatigued, I need to sit down because I can’t even stand to chop veg for dinner sort of way. I’m in bed for 9pm every night anyway! I’m mid 40s. Normally, when not on cancer treatment, no, I regularly do 10-15 mile hikes. But I think it’s okay to be tired. Sometimes we’re just tired.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 28/03/2026 09:53

Same here. I couldn’t actually physically manage it myself - I’m struggling building up to more than 20 minutes’ walk a day in one go and I hate every second of it and come home knackered, in pain and in a very bad mood.

Edited

Its a good point. I walk 3 miles a day, takes me an hour (didnt do it yesterday and may not be arsed today). I dont get tired.

But any exercise seems to make me angry!!!

I do it because its apparently good for me!

Parsleyforme · 28/03/2026 10:19

A normal stroll no but a power walk with hills maybe. Particularly if I’m dehydrated as that makes me really tired regardless of exercise

YellowScarf · 28/03/2026 10:27

Yes when;

1: I was perimenopausal without HRT
2: I was carrying the entire mental load despite having a ‘D’H
And managing the emotional fall out of said H’s emotional abuse of me and DC before I got wise to it.

damelza · 28/03/2026 10:29

Look, it's not a competition, although reading some of the stuff about exercise on MN one would think anything short of a marathon a week is lazy!

You can feel a bit tired after an hours walk, or you can feel energised, depends on lots of things I think. Don't fret, just go with the flow, listen to your body and have a rest. No pressure.

I'm 68 now and a walk of an hour or more is OK for me most of the time. That's when I'M IN THE MOOD for it and not doing it out of a sense of having to! I can do more and I often do less. I feel good after a walk every time though, even if I'm tired, especially if there are any uphills, puff puff ha ha.

Clearinguptheclutter · 28/03/2026 10:31

I run three times a week so a one hour walk would not knacker me out at all but I separately to that once every fortnight or so so I do get really tired and need an afternoon nap! Weekdays are quite hectic and I often don’t get to bed as early as I’d like. Late 40s.

PatienceOfEngels · 28/03/2026 10:37

I find I get very tired with walking outside if it's really windy, or walking with others who are fitter and walk faster than me (then I push myself more/speed up).

But everything's connected to everything else - I'd be tired from this if I'd had a busy and/or stressful week or just before the start of my cycle (2 or 3 days before my menstruation starts I'm often so bone-crushingly tired I want to nap and go to bed super early). Having sugary things just before/during/afetr lunch also makes me fall asleep.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 28/03/2026 10:39

I would probably be tired, however I have just found out I am anaemic so I expect that is why. Have you had your bloods checked recently?

Thedevilhasfinallycaughtupwithhim · 28/03/2026 10:41

Half an hour walk into town, a bit of shopping and half an hour back, not tired at all.

One hour at the beach along the coast and I’m comatose 😂

Nourishinghandcream · 28/03/2026 10:41

If this is a one-off and normally you feel fine after a similar walk then you are probably a bit run down or sickening for something.
If however you feel like this after every walk then I would say that no, it is not normal.

I am 60 and although retired, can spend the whole day walking (for leisure of course!) and still only feel moderately tired. If I had been out for only 1-2hrs (the normal walk for our Ddogs) then I would not expect to feel tired in the slightest.

Heyhelga · 28/03/2026 10:44

At 43 I wouldn't say I feel tired after a one hour walk no. Long morning/afternoon walk however yeah I would feel a bit leggy probably.

Sassylovesbooks · 28/03/2026 10:48

To be honest I think it's difficult for anyone to say! How is your overall fitness? Is taking the dog for an hour's walk usual for you? Do you usually feel tired after taking the dog for a walk for an hour? What else had you been doing that day? Are you due for a period (I get more tired beforehand)? Are you perimenopausal? How are you sleeping? All of this is a factor.

millymollymoomoo · 28/03/2026 10:52

Nope
and people really shouldn’t ( unless Ill or some sort of mobility issues )

Lovemycat2023 · 28/03/2026 10:54

I think it’s the time of year we are often a bit run down and tired. It’s been ages since the last bank holidays (thankfully Easter is coming up) and winter was rubbish, so maybe you just need a bit more rest.

For context I am always tired after a walk back from town which is a bit uphill, and usually have a heavy bag. It’s just that walk though, half an hour in a field would be fine!

Luckyingame · 28/03/2026 10:56

Well, it depends who would be walking with me.
On my own or with my husband (no dog), probably not.
My elderly (formerly abusive) parent talking about irrelevant rubbish, probably yes.

BurntBroccoli · 28/03/2026 10:57

It depends on the weather with me. If it’s cold and windy, it feels a struggle but if it’s warm (not too hot) and sunny, I can walk for hours.

Janesput · 28/03/2026 10:58

I'd be ready for a sit down and a cup of tea but it wouldn't wear me out for the rest of the day.

jimbort · 28/03/2026 10:59

If I get very cold then I get tired. So maybe it was cold

SecretBather · 28/03/2026 11:01

No, and when I’m physically tired from exercise it doesn’t make me sleepy.
