What’s wrong with me, hospital clueless

Yesterday at 1pm, I put my 6 month old on the rug with his toys and went for a wee.

As I was walking back I had a sudden severe pain in my right side radiating into my lower back and up to my shoulder, I was in agony.

I called DH who was luckily only on a job 15 mins away, he came straight home and took one look at me and called ambulance, I was shouting out in pain they gave me gas and air and morphine.

I had an emergency CT when dye last night and also have a catheter as lost the ability to wee. Nothing showed on CT, they got me settled on morphine and today I’ve had a transvaginal scan which shows ovaries and womb look normal.

Gynae can’t find a reason so they’ve stopped painkillers and just giving me paracetamol but somethings wrong I feel like somebody’s twisting my insides. The gynae consultant was horrible and said the surgical team will come see me if they think it’s worth it?? So I’m waiting for that if they come.

I’m in so much pain and genuinely scared they’ll send me home not knowing what is wrong with me.

Has anyone has anything similar?

wait do people think I’m lying? If you search my username I’m a long term user of Mumsnet I’m genuinely as baffled as everyone else

Someone misread your comment about having woken up 20 minutes ago and thought you were claiming to be posting 20 minutes after the end of emergency surgery and leapt to the conclusion that it was all impossible. One other person (that I saw - maybe there were others) thought the same.

People misreading posts and leaping to conclusions seems to be a practice on MN doesn’t it!

Anyway I really hope you get good news when you see someone for the post op update and that things get better from now on. You’ve been treated terribly. Someone who’s in terrible pain shouldn’t be just sent home and told to come back if it happens again - there needs to be an explanation because it’s obvious that it will happen again.

Seeing as she just had emergency surgery it looks like there was a good reason for that health anxiety. Far too often women's symptoms are dismissed as anxiety, sometimes with devastating consequences.

BinNightTonight · 29/03/2026 12:52

Gosh, I'm so sorry. It could be so many things. I hope you get answers today.

Thank you for explaining @wracky
I don't post often so wasn't aware of this guideline/rule.

lol, whats particularly amusing is that on threads where the OP really isnt genuine and theres loads of people questioning it and then getting deleted, the thread will suddenly disappear because its been pulled because the OP isnt genuine!!!

A person needs surgery and this is your comment.
Unbelievable.

Sailawaygirl · 29/03/2026 12:59

Gosh. You poor thing. Please get your husband to contact PALS ASAP as well

Just ran it through Dola a good AI, here are the results:The symptoms described – sudden, severe pain in the right side radiating to the lower back and shoulder, experienced after urinating – could indicate several medical conditions. It is crucial to seek professional medical evaluation for a definitive diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
Potential Causes of Severe Side and Back Pain After Urination
Several conditions can cause severe pain in the right side, lower back, and radiating to the shoulder, particularly after urination. These include kidney stones, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and issues related to the appendix or pelvic floor muscles.
Kidney Stones
Kidney stones can cause intense pain, often described as sharp and radiating. This pain, known as renal colic, typically starts in the flank (side) and can move towards the lower back and groin. The pain can be so severe that it radiates upwards towards the shoulder. The act of urination can sometimes exacerbate the pain as the stone moves or irritates the urinary tract2.
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
While UTIs commonly cause burning or pain during urination (dysuria), severe UTIs, especially if they affect the kidneys (pyelonephritis), can lead to pain in the side and back. The pain might be felt on the right side if the right kidney is involved. Dysuria itself is pain or discomfort when urinating1.
Appendicitis
Although appendicitis typically causes pain in the lower right abdomen, the pain can sometimes be more generalized or radiate to the back. Movement or muscle contractions, such as those occurring during urination, might worsen the pain2.
Interstitial Cystitis (Bladder Pain Syndrome)
This is a chronic condition characterized by pain and pressure in the bladder area, which can also manifest as lower urinary tract symptoms. While often described as bladder pain, it can sometimes present as pain in the side or back, and symptoms can be triggered or worsened by urination4.
Pelvic Floor Muscle Issues
Weakness or inflammation of the pelvic floor muscles can contribute to pain during urination and discomfort in the lower abdomen or side. These muscles support pelvic organs and their dysfunction can lead to various pain patterns2.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Given the severity of the pain described, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider promptly. They can perform a physical examination, ask about your medical history, and order diagnostic tests such as urine analysis, blood tests, or imaging scans to determine the exact cause of the pain and recommend the most effective treatment. Prompt medical attention is crucial to prevent potential complications and manage severe pain effectively5.

I'm sorry I am new here I didn't mean to post the reply twice! I hope you get it sorted, and don't settle if you are not happy!

CustardySergeant · 29/03/2026 13:24

Well, she's just had surgery, so I'm sure they know what the problem was now.

Wheresthebeach · 29/03/2026 13:25

Heath anxiety often goes hand in hand with pain/issues being ignored by doctors and women being dismissed.

likelysuspect · 29/03/2026 13:27

Oh god more AI

She's in hospital, they'll be looking at all that, in fact most of it they did look at, and unfortunately missed whatever which meant that they needed to then operate.

So typical. Ive had the in and out of hospital thing, they discharge you and then the next minute you're right back there in agony. I was sent away from a GP with 'nothing to see here', later that night ambulance into hospital.

Cantpee · 29/03/2026 13:33

Have they definitely checked your kidneys to check your urine flow? I have another thread but I have damaged ureters from surgery that have caused a blockage. The pain before it was treated was excruciating, a dull ache in my kidney but also waves of intense cramping pain that made me vomit.

The short term treatment for me is a nephrostomy to relieve pressure on my ureter and kidney and divert the urine. I am in a fb group for nephrostomies and there are a lot of women there who have had issues with their ureters becoming blocked due to endo.

Cantpee · 29/03/2026 13:36

Sorry I have seen you have had surgery. I had read all your updates but think it got lost in the rest of your post! I hope you get answers soon.

OneGoldKoala · 29/03/2026 13:42

No medical advice but just to say I hope they get to the bottom of it and you make a speedy recovery

elm26 · 29/03/2026 13:44

I’m sorry to those that don’t believe me but it’s very real and very scary. This is my current view. I’ll stop posting now, I’ve had a chest xray, more bloods and pain relief. Thank you to all of those who’ve sent suggestions and kind messages/well wishes. You kind people who actually help and give advice are the reason I’ve been on Mumsnet for so many years. Hopefully I get full answers now and I can get better and home to my babies and DH. DH is writing a huge complaint to PALS. My DD was screaming as I was on the floor lips turning blue and choking on my own vomit just hours after they discharged me. That’s not okay and I hope anyone who reads this thread advocates for themselves better than I did yesterday when I let them discharge me.

Take care OP, I hope you get sensible answers soon. Don't let the troll hunters scare you off getting support here. I've had multiple surgeries and it's a painful road to recovery so don't be shy about posting.

Please don't focus on the people who suggested you weren't a genuine poster, OP. They are just arseholes, as evidenced by their other comments. I really hope you're more comfortable and are being properly taken care of. Have you screenshotted your posts for your complaint, just in case the thread gets lost?

Captivatingcapybara · 29/03/2026 13:48

Op, I am so sorry to read about your horrible experiences. I really hope you can get some answers. Wishing you well.

Pleasd don't give the armchair detectives any of your energy, OP. They're just a bunch of bored housewives, nothing going for them, 0 education, and probably a shitty husband. They come on here to bring other people down to their own, miserable level, so they can feel better about themselves. They are not worth your head space.

(Nice choice of squash! My fav!)

I hope you get better soon, OP. I really do. I'm so glad your husband is putting a complaint into PALS, but I think compensation wouldn't be out of the question because of how bad this is.

Talkingfrog · 29/03/2026 13:51

Glad you have now had some treatment, even if it took an emergency for you to be listened to. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

RosesAndHellebores · 29/03/2026 13:54

@elm26 I was so sorry to read your update and hope ypu are feeling better soon and get clear communication from now. Good on your dh for complaining.

I hope you both advocatenfor some explanations whilst you are in hospital and I hope you get the oppprtunity to ask some clear whys at the next ward round. Don't hesitate to ask to speak to, indeed demand, the the consultant in charge of your care. Be as stroppy as you need to be because your are important and the squaky wheel.gets the most oil.

Laurentizer · 29/03/2026 13:54

Oh christ that is really awful, and your poor DD, not acceptable. Yes, please make sure they get a complaint; there are so many really good hospitals and excellent hospital workers worth their salt will agree with us!. Take care x

Applecup · 29/03/2026 13:54

Sending courage and please ignore the arseholes doubting your posts. Hope to get a more positive update from you.

Ignore the people who don't believe you. I can only assume those people have never had the misfortune of dealing with the NHS in a situation like this where the issue isn't clear. I've been on multiple shit-show situations with the NHS and unfortunately it's very real that this happens. I hope you're getting answers now, and although unlikely, I hope you get an apology.
