To cringe when middle class women swear

On Mumsnet at least they use embarrassing words like 'cockwomble' and think it's edgy. Only working and upper class people sound right swearing.

OP posts:

Yeah but loads overdo it, say things like 'fuck off to the far side of fuck' and stuff, just sounds so forced

I actually agree. Also using the C word. Which I find misogynistic whether it’s used by a man or a woman. But it seems I’m in a minority.

dippy567 · 21/03/2026 14:33

Don't mind the f word, but the c word is used fairly regularly and that just makes me cringe. F word pretty main stream, but c word still only suitable in extreme circumstances imo, and often used here when not at all necessary.

Agree re elaborated swear words...no need!

igelkott2026 · 21/03/2026 14:34

I'm with you OP - not the class thing but there's no need for educated people to swear (unless they are hurt or the printer doesn't work ;) ). Plenty of other effective and interesting language to use.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 21/03/2026 14:34

I’m sure we will get the ‘limited vocabulary’ comments, despite some of the most intelligent and erudite people swearing.

If someone asks me respectfully not to say certain words I will try to comply. However I had a colleague who moved into our office and decided a swear box should be implemented. I didn’t change my habits because I’m not a child.

Ah here we are - only thick people swear 😀 Plenty of educated people do it - get a grip!

Me too. I don't think you're in a minority. It's really not a word that anyone with a brain cell uses.

it’s a pity parents aren’t stopping themselves cursing and policing their own kids’ language, then we wouldn’t be in the depths we’re in. In the 80s cursing wasn’t near what it is now

As I've said on other threads, just because something is possible doesn't make it desirable.

It's cringey when middle-aged women think it's edgy or cool on here. And it's unprofessional in a workplace.

I wonder if some of it comes from driving. In the 1980s there was a lot less traffic on the roads and it was much less stressful. Now someone does something stupid more or less every time you go out in the car, and the natural reaction may well be to swear (even if it's a milder swearword) even if the kids are with you.

A few years ago DS and I placed a bet that DH would swear at a certain junction of the M25 because someone always does something stupid there and tries to kill us. We won the bet and fortunately didn't get killed despite the best efforts of someone.

Depends on the workplace. I work in a professional environment with educated people who swear.

You can’t police people’s vocabulary and actually that is more cringeworthy than daring to swear 🤣

1000StrawberryLollies · 21/03/2026 14:40

Nobody thinks they are being edgy by swearing, because it's not remotely edgy to swear. I mean come on... you can't possibly think that someone saying 'cockwomble' thinks it's edgy?! Your class-based analysis is absurd. Picking one social class which you think shouldn't be allowed to swear is just idiotic. I'd have said 'fucking idiotic', but I'm middle class so it's not allowed 🙄

thedramaQueen · 21/03/2026 14:40

I think there are quite a few people who have been walking around with their eyes and ears closed - people swear, have always done this and it's ridiculous to suggest that it has suddenly got any worse than it has been and to bring gender and class into it is frankly shameful... some people on here are giving me Mrs Whitehouse vibes...

Okay well I went to an average comp and knew all the main words within the first year. If you don’t have children then it isn’t relevant

I don't like the word cunt, it makes me wince.
I do love a generous sprinkling of fucking.

There is only one person I sporadically refer to as cunt. Not to her face mind but those of us who know her, know that she is the ultimate cunt. We don't say it often, just when she has done yet another one of her typical cunty things. I am perfectly polite to her face of course.

So you think the likes of Stephen Fry are thick? Cool. (I don’t like him but he is a user of the ‘c-word’)

Just admit you are offended, that’s fine. But people who cast aspersions on people purely because they dare use words in their own conversations (that you are only likely to hear in passing) do look a little thick themselves. 🤣

WeekendFreedom · 21/03/2026 13:53

But how can you tell their middle class from that? That actually sounds like something a lower class person would say

Lower middle, more like…
(inserts appropriate British class nuance into the debate.]

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 21/03/2026 14:46

’Lower class’…

Nice.

Ive three teens and an adult and they get killed for cursing, they do curse and they get called out every time, back when I was a kid we weren’t even allowed say shut up as my dad used to say how would you like someone to say that to you? How would you like someone to say what you’re saying shouldn’t be said? So I’ve always lived by that.

Wellthisisdifficult · 21/03/2026 14:51

Some people are natural swearers and others, not so much. I would say it’s more to do with intelligence. Those with average IQs should probably never swear.

But a lot of people are saying exactly that.

Good for you, I’m sure your kids don’t swear when they are out of earshot.

I didn’t swear in front of my parents for years either. I can respect someone asking me not to swear but if it’s that bad, they don’t have to be around me.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 21/03/2026 14:53

Arses to that, although I normally reserve 'cunt' for very special occasions.

BatchCookBabe · 21/03/2026 14:53

LOL! 😂

YABU. Cockwomble is a fucking a brilliant word.

tartyflette · 21/03/2026 14:55

Ipollita · 21/03/2026 13:36

You can always tell when someone is middle class and doesn’t swear in real life. “Asshole” is the biggest giveaway, or describing someone or something as “badass”. It’s nauseating.

The only people who say asshole instead of arsehole are North American in the main, it seems.
It sounds like an Americanisation of a fine old English word, used by Chaucer, no less.

ChickpeaCauliflowerSalad · 21/03/2026 14:58

Alconleigh · 21/03/2026 12:51

No one has ever written the term cockwomble thinking it was edgy. If you think that you’re definitely not getting the tone of the place.

Exactly.

I use cockwomble, it's a great word.

no idea why the OP would think, I'd think, it's 'edgy' 💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♀️

Some people are just odd.

Friendlygingercat · 21/03/2026 15:04

I am middle class (university lecturer) but of working class origins. I will happily tell someone to fuck off to the far side of fuck and then fuck some more.
