AIBU to think that, if you sell porridge, you should supply salt?

Starbucks sell really good porridge, with nuts and seeds.
But don't have salt sachets.
And the staff look at you as though you have 2 heads when you ask.
AIBU to find this irritating?

Totally agree with you on this one. Not everyone wants honey on their porridge

Enko · 20/03/2026 09:09

Keep a few satchets in your bag if you need this. You cant expext shops to cater for all preferences .

Sausagenbacon · 20/03/2026 09:12

What, not to supply tiny sachets of salt, when there's umpteen varieties of sweetener?

Salt has no place on porridge. I don't care what the Scots/purists say 😉

Iamgucciyouarecrocs · 20/03/2026 09:47

YABU to have salt on it!

Noshowlomo · 20/03/2026 09:47

Salt on porridge? Is this a thing?

LoveWine123 · 20/03/2026 09:48

Agreed! Not everyone is addicted to sugar.

HeddaGarbled · 20/03/2026 09:49

Is this a thing?

Used to be in the dark ages aka my childhood. Grim.

nam3c4ang3 · 20/03/2026 09:50

w.t.f have i just read?!😳salt?! PORRIDGE????????

PersephonePomegranate · 20/03/2026 09:50

Here's a new concept: Some people don't have salt or a sugary toppping on porridge! Both are unhealthy!

Howeasy · 20/03/2026 09:50

Salt on porridge? Is this a thing?

Yes it’s very much a thing, especially in Scotland

Farewelltothatid · 20/03/2026 09:51

Don't you know the adverse health affects of salt?

I live in Scotland and eat porridge every day and would never dream of putting salt on it - a handful of raisins and a bit of cinnamon is what I add to porridge.

I don't add salt to anything actually. And use very little in cooking.

Pebbles16 · 20/03/2026 09:52

I totally agree OP, why are all the sweet-toothed people covered and those of us of a savoury bend excluded?

beeautifullif3 · 20/03/2026 09:54

2 things , yabu to put salt on porridge and Starbucks do have salt sachets u need to ask for them

Antihistamine62 · 20/03/2026 09:55

Salt on porridge is elite 😍

Pumpkinmagic · 20/03/2026 09:56

Salt on porridge? What did I just read.

Surely the Scottish tradition is to actually make the porridge with a pinch of salt whilst cooking?
I 've not heard of salt being added when it's served

shockthemonkey · 20/03/2026 09:58

We’re all anti-salters until the first time we eat a beautifully made, lightly salted porridge. I also the add a bit of brown sugar, god forgive me.
It’s like popcorn, I like it salty-sweet. But go light on the salt!

RaraRachael · 20/03/2026 09:58

My mother always made porridge with water and salt (Scotland). It was disgusting.

NewYearNewMee · 20/03/2026 09:58

I think the issue is supplying them for simply one product (the porridge) rather than the sweeteners that get put into multiple drinks. Probably can’t leave them out at the self service section either due to the possibility of people putting them into their drink 😂

I keep a tiny pinch tin of maldon sea salt in my handbags for this reason!

Dearg · 20/03/2026 10:01

Porridge is the work of the devil. With or without salt, sugar or any other toppings.

Growing up, in Scotland, mum made it with salt, water and served the milk on the side. 🤢

BillieWiper · 20/03/2026 10:05

Go to pret and buy a coffee and cram loads of salt sachets into your bag. I do it with sweetners.

Gregg's doesn't do salt sachets either. I think it's because it's already supposedly too salty?! But the wedges definitely need it.

Good for you.
Does that mean no one else gets to put salt on their food if they want to?

I'm with you OP. I couldn't eat porridge without salt either.

I'm Scottish and I don't put salt in while cooking it.
I make it with water, add salt and milk after it's cooked.

Salt on porridge? Is this a thing?

It’s the only thing. Anything else is foul and should be illegal.
