AIBU to think that, if you sell porridge, you should supply salt?

Starbucks sell really good porridge, with nuts and seeds.
But don't have salt sachets.
And the staff look at you as though you have 2 heads when you ask.
AIBU to find this irritating?

I'm guessing that whatever pre-processed porridge-making concoction that Starbucks use is probably already fairly heavily salted.

I usually add the salt while making porridge rather than at the table.

I'm Scottish and I don't put salt in while cooking it.
I make it with water, add salt and milk after it's cooked.

It just shows how everybody's tastes and methods are different when it comes to porridge.

When I came to Scotland nearly 50 years ago I stayed at times with my then boyfriend-'s family. They were Glasgow highlanders. The amount of salt they put on their food was truly amazing - and thats after putting salt in at the cooking stage as well. At that time the links between salt and health issues were only just started being talked about.

Here's a new concept: Some people don't have salt or a sugary toppping on porridge! Both are unhealthy!

Salt is not unhealthy. You actually need it to live. There is absolutely nothing unhealthy about a little bit of salt sprinkled on food.

Salt on porridge? Is this a thing?

Yes. I was brought up in Ireland and have only ever known porridge with salt. Never knew people had sweet porridge until I came to England! I love porridge but never have it in a cafe as they assume everyone wants honey/fruit, etc on it. 🤮

TheFlis · 20/03/2026 10:31

The 2 Starbucks I visit regularly both have salt sachets.

Salt on porridge? Is this a thing?

It most certainly is. Particularly north of the border and has been for centuries.

capture2 · 20/03/2026 10:52

Salt and butter on it is so good

BertieBotts · 20/03/2026 10:56

If you are in Scotland YANBU, if you're in England/Wales I think YABU.

LadyMacbethWasFierce · 20/03/2026 11:00

I’ve heard it’s also traditional to put whiskey on porridge. The mind boggles. I wouldn’t like salt on porridge. But I do prefer salty popcorn to sweet. Starbucks should have little sachets of it though.

ThreadneedleRoad · 20/03/2026 11:01

Starbucks is a US chain. I doubt salted porridge is even on its radar. Plus, its food is revolting.

Teajenny7 · 20/03/2026 11:03

Sweet porridge (especially with artifical sweetners) is the work of the devil!

Years ago while treking in Nepal we were given sweet porridge. I couldn't eat it. My guide questioned it and I said it was too sweet. Turns out they had salt in theirs too.

I was told they did it for the Americans.
After that I had my breakfast with the local guides and staff in the kitchens. It made my 21 day hike much more enjoyable.

Menopausio · 20/03/2026 11:06

Salt on porridge is perfectly normal - Im Irish and DH is Irish/Scottish. My English friends do think I'm slightly nuts ( about most things, but including salt on porridge 😁)

Don't you know the adverse health affects of salt?

I live in Scotland and eat porridge every day and would never dream of putting salt on it - a handful of raisins and a bit of cinnamon is what I add to porridge.

I don't add salt to anything actually. And use very little in cooking.

@Farewelltothatid , Don't you know the adverse health affects effects of salt? You need salt. It's excessive consumption that is unhealthy.

GenieGenealogy · 20/03/2026 11:08

InterestedDad37 · 20/03/2026 09:46

Salt has no place on porridge. I don't care what the Scots/purists say 😉

Scottish born and bred and I wholeheartedly agree. Salt has not place on porridge.

I would assume that Starbucks do not provide salt as none of the other items they sell would ever require salt to be added. Unlike hot drinks.

Yes we need salt. But only very small amounts.
If a person eats processed foods and eats food where salt has been added at the cooking or baking stage then also adding salt at the eating stage is quite likely to tip salt consumption into unhealthy consumption.

Noshowlomo · 20/03/2026 11:19

Well well. The things I learn!
Can I have it with sugar and salt? The salty sweet combo

DarkForces · 20/03/2026 11:20

Dearg · 20/03/2026 10:01

Porridge is the work of the devil. With or without salt, sugar or any other toppings.

Growing up, in Scotland, mum made it with salt, water and served the milk on the side. 🤢

My mum used to make chicken with mushroom sauce I.e. chicken cooked in condensed soup. It was similarly disgusting. I really should have reported her somewhere

StationJack · 20/03/2026 11:22

You actually need about 5g a day. If you never add it to food and don't eat processed food, it's quite easy to not get enough.

I don't eat baked or processed food very often, and never add salt to my food, and sometimes feel quite strange from needing salt.

LoveWine123 · 20/03/2026 09:48

Agreed! Not everyone is addicted to sugar.

Clearly they are addicted to salt instead then..

PinkTonic · 20/03/2026 11:25

Farewelltothatid · 20/03/2026 09:57

Surely the Scottish tradition is to actually make the porridge with a pinch of salt whilst cooking?
I 've not heard of salt being added when it's served

I do this. It makes all the difference. I add a sprinkle of brown sugar on top when serving.

MorrisonsPlatter · 20/03/2026 11:30

YABU for visiting Starbucks, remember the tax evasion?

ViciousCurrentBun · 20/03/2026 11:35

My friend is close to 70 and she still talks about how her Scottish Grandpa scared her with the question, you nae having salt on your porridge lass? when she was tiny.

BertieBotts · 20/03/2026 10:56

I'm Welsh. I always put a pinch of salt in when making porridge.
