AIBU to think that, if you sell porridge, you should supply salt?

Starbucks sell really good porridge, with nuts and seeds.
But don't have salt sachets.
And the staff look at you as though you have 2 heads when you ask.
AIBU to find this irritating?

I’m heaving reading this 😂 salt?! SALT?!
So… just me with the golden syrup porridge and a layer of sugar on top then 👀

Years ago, I used to eat porridge with salt and cream. Not salt in the porridge, but sprinkled on top. Absolutely delicious on both counts.

Now, I neither eat cream nor add salt to food. Most people don’t eat salt with porridge so YABU.

I haven’t RTT but I assume the Scots will be here en masse to point out that all porridge should be eaten with salt and it’s only the sassenachs that add sweet stuff.

Aye 😂

Aposterhasnoname · 20/03/2026 12:52

Ugh, when I was much younger I always had ready brek, with golden syrup for breakfast. My then boyfriend, (who was Scottish) anxious to impress, offered to make me some "proper" porridge one day. A big steaming bowl duly arrived and I poured a very generous amount of syrup all over it. Needless to say, heavily salted porridge and golden syrup do not go well together. Was years before I touched the stuff again, and never, ever with salt.

gostickyourheadinapig · 20/03/2026 12:55

Salt on porridge is the default in Scotland, but Scottish is not one of the world's great cuisines.

Sausagenbacon · 20/03/2026 09:12

What, not to supply tiny sachets of salt, when there's umpteen varieties of sweetener?

Probably because there's not much call for it.

I had no idea that cooking and table salt were different. We only buy table salt and DH also uses it for cooking his veg. I had no idea we may be missing out by not using actual cooking salt.

Have a quick look next time you’re in the supermarket. It’s normally marked prominently. Lots of types of cooking salt but most people use running salt which is the “saltiest” of all the salts! I have cooking salt in the kitchen (three types excluding soy sauce, because I’m a knob like that) and a salt and pepper mill on the table. I use running salt for pasta and rice water, kosher salt for seasoning, flakes as finishing salt. Unsurprisingly, the salt mill is rarely touched!

There's a Katie Morag episode where Granny Mainland and Neilly Beag start selling porridge to tourists and then end up in a fight because Granny wants to cater to all the tourists who want sweet toppings, and Neilly Beag refuses to let anyone put anything other than salt on it!

Meadowfinch · 20/03/2026 13:25

Porridgeis just rolled oats and water (or milk)

Some like it with salt, some with sugar. But adding either halves the manufacturer's target market, so not unreasonable to let people add their own.

Rett63 · 20/03/2026 13:36

Agree. I only ever have salt on my porridge. Never sweetened

SexIsNotNebulous · 20/03/2026 13:39

I don’t have salt on porridge or sugar, just as it is with nuts and banana, but I don’t judge anyone that does. Have you ever had a crumpet with butter and salt? Wonderful, far better than jam.

Enko · 20/03/2026 13:50

Mmmchocolatebuttons · 20/03/2026 10:28

Salt is not unhealthy. You actually need it to live. There is absolutely nothing unhealthy about a little bit of salt sprinkled on food.

Salt can be unhealthy if you eat to much

While salt is essential it is only healthy in small amounts. Exsessive intake can lead to a whole load of health issues.

There is already salt in the starbuck porridges. Adding more is not healthy (nor is adding sugar to your drinks I hasten to add)

In response to @Sausagenbacon comment on a tiny salt sachet. It comes down to supply and demand. There is likely very little demand in a starbucks for the tiny salt sachets but a high demand for the sugar and sweetener.

BauhausOfEliott · 20/03/2026 13:50

They really, really do. Salty and sweet things do often go well together - salted caramel, salted dark chocolate, sweet-and-salty popcorn, chocolate pretzels etc.

Salt on porridge? Is this a thing?

It is very much a thing in Scotland, so I don't think the OP is BU to expect Starbucks to be able to cater to this common requirement.

Salty porridge is truly disgusting though.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 20/03/2026 13:54

LoveWine123 · 20/03/2026 09:48

Agreed! Not everyone is addicted to sugar.

Is it better to be addicted to salt, then?

Or does putting salt/sugar on your porridge not actually indicate an addiction?

Farewelltothatid · 20/03/2026 13:55

BauhausOfEliott · 20/03/2026 13:51

No.

Well it was a pretty pointless comment then wasn't it because apart from getting your sneer vibe from it I have no idea what you mean.

zurigo · 20/03/2026 13:59

YABU. It's an American chain. Americans don't put salt on porridge. If you want salt on your porridge then carry your own sachets.

RoseDog · 20/03/2026 14:01

My mother always made porridge with water and salt (Scotland). It was disgusting.

It was my dad who made it in our house, it gave me childhood trauma, it was grey and watery 🤢. I have never eaten porridge as an adult!

BauhausOfEliott · 20/03/2026 14:02

RaraRachael · 20/03/2026 12:03

Here's a new concept for you, too: Some people have some fucking joy in their lives.

Totally agree.

My XMiL was obsessed with foods being bad for you and would try and lecture me about eating them and giving them to the kids. In the end I told her that if we stopped eating all the things she claimed were bad for us, we'd starve to death.

Exactly. Plus, that kind of unsolicited, patronising advice, dished to another functioning adult, is just so incredibly rude. How much of an ego does someone have to have to point out to other grown adults, who did not request an opinion on their matter, that salt/sugar can be bad for you? Do people think we don't already know that? Are people incapable of understanding that other adults are fully capable of risk assessment and sometimes, just think 'Fuck it, I'd rather my food tasted nice'?

I used to have a colleague who constantly informed me that I drank too much too much tea because it contains caffeine and inhibits iron absorption in large quantities. When she mentioned for the third time I said 'Yes, I know.' And she said 'But you keep drinking it!' To which I said 'Yes, I know, I just like tea' and changed the subject while in my head I was yelling "I KEEP DRINKING IT BECAUSE I LIKE IT AND I COULDN'T GIVE A FLYING FUCK ABOUT IRON ABSORPTION AND ANYWAY MY IRON LEVELS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN FINE YOU NOSY PATRONISING LUMP"

It wasn't pointless because - like the salt I put on my porridge - I enjoyed it.

StationJack · 20/03/2026 14:04

@Enko , Salt in your diet - NHS
Salt can be unhealthy if you eat too much - the amount you need is actually quite a bit (a level teaspoon is quite a lot to me).
What's unhealthy is the salt that's already in prepared food because you don't see it unless you check the ingredients.

Perfect Porridge

Don't you know the adverse health affects of salt?

I live in Scotland and eat porridge every day and would never dream of putting salt on it - a handful of raisins and a bit of cinnamon is what I add to porridge.

I don't add salt to anything actually. And use very little in cooking.

Your body does need salt. I don’t think a sprinkling of salt on/in porridge does much harm, it’s more the high levels of hidden salt in ready made/processed food that’s a health issue.
Raisins are high in sugar and terrible for your teeth.

I'll take addiction to salt any day vs addiction to sugar! I wonder which one does more harm...
