AIBU to think that, if you sell porridge, you should supply salt?

Starbucks sell really good porridge, with nuts and seeds.
But don't have salt sachets.
And the staff look at you as though you have 2 heads when you ask.
AIBU to find this irritating?

Well I guess you learn something new every day, I had no idea anyone added salt to their porridge! It’s always sugar, jam or honey so yeah, I’d probably look at you a little strange too!

Arrowarrowarrow · 21/03/2026 08:09

It’s not for me but I’m surprised at the number of people who’ve never heard of people having salt in their porridge. It’s a well known thing.

In even more shocking news, some people even make it with water not milk.

On the OPs point, I sort of agree but I don’t expect all retailers to cater to my every whim. Maybe email head office - if a few people do the same they might change their policy.

binnibonnieboo · 21/03/2026 08:11

I hate sweet porridge, only like it with salt. Of course they should supply salt.

I absolutely love these bun fights about absolutely nothing. What a diverse food culture we have of salt on porridge or not. Perhaps you could keep some salt sachets in your bag for next time OP?

Sausagenbacon · 21/03/2026 09:42

Yeh, and how would that end up? A layer of salt on the bottom of my bag!

Just get one of their horrible salty coffees to go with it, OP. That'll balance out the taste profile 😂

So take ur own, put something else on it or order something else. Businesses can’t cater to every taste

We’re all anti-salters until the first time we eat a beautifully made, lightly salted porridge. I also the add a bit of brown sugar, god forgive me.
It’s like popcorn, I like it salty-sweet. But go light on the salt!

Edited

This is how I have my porridge. Food of the Gods.

likelysuspect · 22/03/2026 10:08

Yes salt and sugar is an excellent combination

Lethal for dieting though

Hotcrossed · 22/03/2026 10:10

they also sell sausage rolls surely,
so salt should be provided

midwalker · 22/03/2026 10:15

Unsalted porridge is horrific! It tastes of nothing. If the oats are cooked with salt then you don’t need more, but if no salt is added to the water then you must sprinkle salt on top.

It’s even worse than pasta cooked in unsalted water.

Do you cook it with water though? I cook my pinhead oatmeal with full fat milk and its gorgeous

I toast the oats first in a pan, makes all the difference.

I dont add salt or sugar

I have been known to put a variety of toppings on my porridge including cheese.

What, not to supply tiny sachets of salt, when there's umpteen varieties of sweetener?

It’s mainly a coffee shop in case you had missed it. Most people don’t sprinkle salt on their lattes and brownies. Their food is pre-packaged and full of sweet and salty anyway so no need to offer extra salt sachets for a minority of customers like you.

Take your business elsewhere if you don’t like it or bring your own salt 😵‍💫

no but they surely sell sausage rolls and other savoury things?

StMarie4me · 22/03/2026 11:31

I cook my porridge with water and a pinch of salt (I use lo salt). Healthy and delicious. YANBU OP!

GreyBeeplus3 · 22/03/2026 22:55

Sausagenbacon
In hospital after having my first child sat down every morning to breakfast with a Glaswegian lady who always had double porridge covered in a layer of salt because that's the traditional Scottish way apparently
And she couldn't believe I ate mine with a little sugar!
Each to their own is what I say be boring if we were all the same

GenieGenealogy · 23/03/2026 17:30

My very scottish grandad had porridge every morning, always with black treacle.

Did you miss the point where I said the food they sell is pre-made and full of salt and sugar already?? Who puts extra salt on their sausage roll 🙄

If you know you prefer extra salt then carry your own if it’s a deal breaker. Shops can’t cater to everyone. One of my kids prefers Mayo with their chips and McDonalds (for example) only offers Ketchup so she has some little Mayo sachets in her bag. 🤷‍♀️
