AIBU to think that, if you sell porridge, you should supply salt?

Starbucks sell really good porridge, with nuts and seeds.
But don't have salt sachets.
And the staff look at you as though you have 2 heads when you ask.
AIBU to find this irritating?

My mum used to make chicken with mushroom sauce I.e. chicken cooked in condensed soup. It was similarly disgusting. I really should have reported her somewhere

I think I saw The Pioneer Woman (American TV "cook") do something similar with condensed soup.

Porridge definitely needs a pinch of salt in when being made, it really does make a difference. But not sprinkling on top, that's madness!
And the Starbucks porridge has salt in already:

Rowrowrowmachine · 20/03/2026 11:46

Just get some salt sachets for your bag?

You can get 2000 salt sachets for less than £10 online. That's a shit load of salty porridge!

Salt has no place on porridge. I don't care what the Scots/purists say 😉

Agreed!

corblimeyguvnr · 20/03/2026 11:50

Just steal it from other places 😂

Don't you know the adverse health affects of salt?

I live in Scotland and eat porridge every day and would never dream of putting salt on it - a handful of raisins and a bit of cinnamon is what I add to porridge.

I don't add salt to anything actually. And use very little in cooking.

Peak Mumsnet ^^

Here's a new concept: Some people don't have salt or a sugary toppping on porridge! Both are unhealthy!

God, I hate (some) people.

BauhausOfEliott · 20/03/2026 11:57

I add salt to porridge while I'm cooking it. Makes it miles nicer. I've yet to collapse from hypernatraemia and my blood pressure is consistently on the lower side of normal.

Here's a new concept for you, too: Some people have some fucking joy in their lives.

PhoenixReincarnated · 20/03/2026 11:59

Salt on porridge doesn't appeal and neither does water. I've had golden syrup on porridge but atm I'm having sweet cinnamon. Yes, I have a sweet tooth 😋

canklesmctacotits · 20/03/2026 11:59

In the UK cooking salt is normally iodized, and this is the only source of iodine for most people. So people who cut salt out of their diets and only user table salt are probably doing more damage than not.

Salt is a flavour enhancer so porridge with a pinch of salt just makes it taste…oatier I guess. You can still add whatever flavorings you want.

Totally agree.

My XMiL was obsessed with foods being bad for you and would try and lecture me about eating them and giving them to the kids. In the end I told her that if we stopped eating all the things she claimed were bad for us, we'd starve to death.

Flamingojune · 20/03/2026 12:06

I make porridge with water so def needs salt. But i am also a big fan if sweet n salt together

My friend is close to 70 and she still talks about how her Scottish Grandpa scared her with the question, you nae having salt on your porridge lass? when she was tiny.

I’m Scottish and my dh and I stopped having porridge when visiting my dad because we got sick of the lectures we’d get about putting sugar instead of salt!

StationJack · 20/03/2026 12:21

Porridge with water is how it should be made, and although I wouldn't add salt, it would make more sense than adding sugar.

Sugar and salt do not belong together.

Shinyhappyapple · 20/03/2026 12:29

I used to salt porridge when cooking it, but stopped a few years back when I reduced my salt intake. Have dropped the honey now too , but it does need something - and its probably more reasonable to expect salt than sachets of cinamon or nut butter.

I had no idea that cooking and table salt were different. We only buy table salt and DH also uses it for cooking his veg. I had no idea we may be missing out by not using actual cooking salt.

HoppityBun · 20/03/2026 12:32

Years ago, I used to eat porridge with salt and cream. Not salt in the porridge, but sprinkled on top. Absolutely delicious on both counts.

Now, I neither eat cream nor add salt to food. Most people don’t eat salt with porridge so YABU.

I haven’t RTT but I assume the Scots will be here en masse to point out that all porridge should be eaten with salt and it’s only the sassenachs that add sweet stuff.

I agree.

This reminds me of many, many years ago, when camping with the guides, we had a Scottish patrol leader whose turn it was to cook breakfast. She salted the porridge. Every single girl guide apart from the patrol leader and the guide leader, who was also Scottish, left theirs.

It was a shame to waste so much food, but most of us found the salty porridge inedible.

youalright · 20/03/2026 12:36

If you have a weird preference its on you to provide it. If I liked M&Ms on my porridge I wouldn't expect them to provide it

Rowrowrowmachine · 20/03/2026 12:37

M&M's on porridge sounds gorgeous! I would pay extra for that
