Racism in uk

Charltonstrek · 18/03/2026 10:30

Im finding the level of racism here in the UK to be very unsettling and it seems to be getting worse and im finding it depressing as I have a Muslim partner and I wonder if there is a future here for him. Ive mostly witnessed this on social media with some very derogatory comments anybody else or am I too sensitive

I can’t think of any non-english speaking country I have been to where the locals can’t speak a basic level of English, sure some migrants can’t speak the language, but I find “foreigners” are much more likely to speak English than we are their language.

Hang around here long enough and you'll soon see it.

Of course all racism is equally abhorrent, but not everyone seems to agree.

See upthread the comments from one poster who is proud that her Indian friends hate all Pakistanis.

I think you are being rather ignorant. There's a long history of why Pakistanis and Indians don't get along.

I think you are being ignorant to what that poster is saying. It's really not normal for Indians in the UK to hate all Pakistanis or for Pakistanis to hate all Indians.

Anyone suggesting this is promoting hate and division.

MissyB1 · 18/03/2026 16:54

OP starts a thread about how an increase in racism is getting her down. and all the racists promptly turn up to make it quite clear that they are entirely justified in their racist views! They are loud and proud these days, depressing but sadly predictable, Op has been proven right. Mumsnet like a lot of other social media sites has also become more racist.

Eskarina1 · 18/03/2026 16:54

Does it matter who is most likely to experience racism? It's not a race to the bottom. No amount of racism is acceptable.

I'd be shocked if many people- except Badenoch obviously- who are visibly not white hadn't experienced racism. I'm entirely white passing but still had the experience of all my classmates circling me in primary school and making fake native American war noises because they found out my mum was Indian.

One of the worst, most divisive new things is this Jewish vs Muslim / Jewish vs Black rubbish. Can we make it racists vs everyone else please? It's not acceptable to parrot conspiracy theories about Jewish or Muslim people. It's not acceptable to say, as Diane Abbot did, that Jewish people don't know what real racism is. It's not acceptable to downplay the epic racism that Muslim people face by saying Jewish people have it worse. Mosques and Synagogues have been attacked. It is all horrific.

If you live in a country and can’t speak the language, of course you’re going to struggle! Maybe everyone living in the UK should learn to speak English then this would help reduce those barriers. Surely this is the answer to this problem! If I moved to Spain o would expect to be disadvantaged if I didn’t speak Spanish

Edited

That is about British born people who don’t have language barriers!!

Exactly!

Another example I worked in the ME and fillipinas could not stand other Asian nationalities going to extremes of leaving staff rooms when someone entered. Of course none of the apparently colonial loving Empire supporting Brits would have behaved like this as we are very tolerant, inclusive and nice.

If only others would follow our example.

Just as it is not racist to criticise Israel. Nor would it be racist to criticise theological issues within Judaism, Christianity, or any other religion.

I think people tend to conflate "Muslim" with "middle Eastern" and base their criticism on that...which IS racist.

But its Jewish people that are suffering racism in this country. Not Israelis.

Pineneedlesincarpet · 18/03/2026 16:59

PropertyD · 18/03/2026 13:46

100% agree. I have been many times to the Middle East where women are largely covered up. In 40 degree heat dressed in a burka which is heavy to walk around in. Never mind - the men think its marvelous!

Personally I dont like the burka. If its that women's free choice then maybe although I still dont think in the UK it should be allowed (lots of other countries ban it). It doesnt do anything for women and women's rights.

Ive seen women in burkas swimming in swimming pools. Perhaps they prefer it but it does make me feel sorry for them personally.

Please stop trying to normalise the idea that all Indians and Pakistanis hate each other in the UK.

It's ridiculous and a total lie. It might suit you to believe it but it's bullshit.

I have no skin in the game, nor did the pp who said her Indian friends don't get along with them. It's just bloody obvious looking at the history why many Indians and Pakistanis don't get along. For some reason the other poster jumped on her for it.

Maybe they feel sorry for you having to shave your legs and get all those in grown hairs all over you.

I was stating my experience <and I mentioned Filipinos not Indians> that many, many other nationalities are far more intolerant and racist than the very inclusive Brits.

Why are you dismissing other people's lived experiences?

It's patently bullshit, millions of Pakistanis and Indians get along just fine in the UK, they don't need people like you and others stirring the pot.

Was it pleasant for her to imply Muslim women are deserving of pity because they don't want to wear a bikini / swimsuit?

There are long standing issues between Indians and Pakistanis. It isn't 'bullshit'.

Many other nationalities are far more intolerant than Brits, we are extremely inclusive.

There are issues between India and Pakistan as nations.

That doesn't mean that millions of ordinary Pakistanis and Indians don't get along perfectly well in the UK.

She says her Indian friends hate all Pakistanis, which would suggest her friends are far right extremists, this is not the norm and doesn't represent all Indians.

It is certainly impractical to swim fully clad.

There are plenty of women only slots available where swimwear can be worn.

I was being sarcastic re it being despicable for British immigrants in Spain not to learn Spanish. My point was if that is the standard for immigrants in Britain then it needs to be the same for immigrants from Britain.

Ah, okay.

I think despicable is a strong word, but I certainly don’t think it’s acceptable for Brits to move to Spain, live in enclaves and refuse to integrate with the locals.

I think anyone with a brain can understand why the Spanish would have an issue with this. If the Spanish Government decided today to make it more difficult for Brits to move to Spain and/or impose specific measures with regards to residency and language/integration, I’m sure most people would be supportive of that.

I can’t imagine anyone would realistically think a solution would be for the Spanish to integrate within British ex pat communities, like @nomas seemed to think was a reasonable suggestion and expectation of British people in the UK.

There are issues between many nationalities globally. That doesn't mean that millions Brits and immigrants don't get along perfectly well. Glad we agree that we are a very inclusive country.

This is true, and non/ native English Speakers I’ve asked have listed the following reasons
English speaking films
English language music
The “international” nature of English

You've changed your tune on Indians and Pakistanis getting along, at least.

The UK is an inclusive countries and any racists will get called out, every time.
