to be getting irate at friends with adult DC who do not work?

My DC are in their mid-late 20s and all in work - but are the exception among family and friends. They have around 12 cousins - none of whom have ever worked in so much as a local pub or shop, and all live in their parents' naice houses gaming all day. Lots have one or two degrees, so are not stupid by any means! I think statistically about 50% of young adults of this age that are not working - but among my family and friends it's very much higher.

It's a similar story with friends: every adult child is depressed or anxious and/or autistic so cannot work. The assumption seems to be that the jobs market is too difficult and their children can't cope. Conversation when we meet is all about how frustrated everyone is because they can't get their DC to work or do anything around the house.

I just want to shake them all! They are providing no tough love or reasons that these children will ever work and live independently.

AIBU to be losing my patience with everyone, or am I a bit of a bitch and working life really is too tough these days for young people?

Yet somehow, those with full time jobs didn't miss out on tickets. You often picked them up on the way home. No all day queues. Better customer service, so more agents.

Didn't they? So everyone who wanted a ticket to a gig got one before the Internet?

The point I'm trying to make is that the ou is more or less online now so if the Internet were banned it would make life a lot tougher for a lot of people. Disabled people in particular

It wouldn't because they'd just go back to how it was before the internet. Basically the same, just physical materials posted to your door that you worked through rather than on a screen. I've done both. It's really pretty much the same.

Come on, people can't get tickets to every gig now. Internet sites get clogged, fall over and events get sold out before you even get a chance. Had that experience. Not everyone gets a ticket now. It's just the nature of limited supply.

How do you post materials back to the ou when you can't walk for example? I had a triple leg fracture two years ago and I couldn't walk for three months

But it's the whole - let's ban the Internet. Everything was so much better back in the day. It wasn't. For example I follow football. I used to have a paper season ticket that I had to collect - now I have one that I can download to my phone

I don't know about the OU specifically as that wasn't my university, but you got someone to drop the packaged assignment in the mailbox for you. Or someone would come to the door to collect it if you really couldn't get out. If you didn't have a printer, you hand wrote your assignments, which was quite acceptable and normal.

Not the way it works at the ou. People don't come to your door to collect essays.

I'm not all for banning the internet. I think it's a mixed bag and haven't decided if it's overall more on the good side or more on the negative side. I'd hate to lose access to all the information we have now.

Yes, it is convenient to get tickets in advance and download them. II do that. also think life was easier when it was slower. It wasn't as hard as you might think as often local newsagents carried tickets. There were agents all over the place. Not one central location because that's reduced so much due to the internet.

It's like most things. Good and bad. It would be a shock to the system to go back to the older ways, but that does have it's own good side.

No, because you can now upload them so there is no need for that kind of service. And it wasn't the OU that would collect them, it was someone from the post office.

You really think if someone's well enough to sit and game they're well enough to work?! You really are painting yourself as very ill-informed on this thread.

Ha I know right. I can't think of anything that involves less energy, except maybe scrolling mumsnet! So basically if someone's alive they're well enough to work according to that PP...the fact is everyone has to get through the day somehow and it's really unfair to say well you did x you must be able to do 40 hours a week at work...

MyLimePoet · 20/03/2026 21:06

I don't subscribe to the theory that the Internet should be banned because some young people game. That is completely absurd. Utterly absurd

Yes, that is absurd. There's a lot of things that would be banned if a few people's lack of balance in using them is the criteria. Like my backlog of reading books. No-one would sell me books.

My point is. I needed to be online to do my ou degree. I could not have finished my degree without being online. No post office in my hometown would collect my essays and post them to the ou

In 'the old days', you could every bit have done it just the same. If you had post you couldn't take down because of disability and were one of the rare people who had no-one to do it for you, you called the post office and they arranged for it to be collected. It would be collected and put in with the mail once you'd put it in the prepaid envelope.

I had to go to my football club to buy a season ticket back in the day. 8 mile round trip. Now I can buy one online and upload it to my phone. I honestly would hate things to be the way they were 40 years ago. Even if that means missing out on a gig ticket or two

Some people at the also study from abroad or live in the middle of nowhere. Being online makes a lot of sense

Can't you just... be happy that your kids are doing well and empathise with how frustrating, disappointing and worrying it must be for your friends whose DCs are finding life so much harder??

Not if her children and our children and every other tax payer is working to pay these “adults” benefits no!!

suburburban · 20/03/2026 21:19

There used to be Saturday jobs and YTS

it is really hard for young people at the moment but I think if my dc wasn’t at work I would expect them to do stuff around the house - easier said than done though I know

It certainly makes it easier, but it is still possible, even if a bit harder, to do it from the middle of nowhere or overseas. It's possible for anyone, but online is easier for sure. The major difference is having online groups for students in the same courses to interact.

8 miles is nothing. As a round trip, that's walkable. Even doing it by public transport or car burns more calories than sitting on your backside and downloading a ticket. We have a society that needs to move more.

I do buy tickets online all the time and it is very convenient. Definitely one aspect I do like of the internet.

As for football, wouldn't care if that didn't exist. 😁

Some of your comments are fair, but I just want to take issue with your quote: "you saying "everyone has autism/anxiety/depression these days" is extremely judgemental,"

I said: "It's a similar story with friends: every adult child is depressed or anxious and/or autistic so cannot work." That is the situation - and I've no doubt that some of these adults are unwell enough not to work, but I also think that long-term unemployment (particularly if you have been told you 'can't work' because of your diagnosis) feeds into a cycle of depression and anxiety and the loss of any social skills they might have.

If you end up gaming all night and sleeping all day, you will be depressed pretty quickly.

Likewise when my relatives complain about being 'kept up night with Kevin gaming' I think they are idiots for allowing it.

I have anxiety , suspected Autism and multiple physical disabilities and I work 2 jobs and am 27. I worked all through uni and my masters . I get PIL but bar that I've never claimed any benefits ...

What's the alternative? What if they literally can't work? Just make them homeless? I think people have this naïve idea that if you get them all into work all problems will be solved. In reality they might not be able to cope, might have a breakdown or worse, might be so useless they're just getting paid for doing a job they're incompetent at. I don't even know how much they get in benefits but I doubt it's very much compared to costing an employer potentially hundreds.

Do you think there are any young adults who instead of can't work, just won't work, or won't even try?

That is where you start.
