To put dog mess in a strangers bin?

AnnaQuayRules · 16/03/2026 16:01

I normally would never dream of doing this. However, today I was walking my dog along a road when he decided to crap on the grass verge. So of course I picked it up and bagged it.

It was bin day and everyone's bins were outside their houses. The bin lorry turned into the street and so, as it approached, I popped the bag into the nearest bin which was collected almost immediately.

However the man in the house came storming out and started shouting at me. He said I had no right to put anything in his bin. It got worse when I tried to explain, especially as he hadn't realised it was a dog bag. So I apologised and moved off with him still shouting down the road.

I would never have placed anything in anyone's bin whilst it's on their property, but these bins are all on the pavement waiting to be emptied. It was about 3/4 full, I placed the bag on top of what was there and the whole bin was emptied within about 60 seconds.

Was I really out of order?

I fucking hate that. It’s your dog. It’s your shit. Take it home.

And I say that as a dog owner.

Judging by the comments on here I completely missed the memo that we’re supposed to be cleaning inside our outdoor bin?? I don’t understand why when it only gets emptied to put a bag of rubbish in?

To be fair, it probably depends where you have to keep your bin. The only logical place for mine is along the side of my house, right next to my shed and gate leading to the garden, therefore it's quite close to the house. If I had somewhere further away to keep it, I'd possibly not bother.

A vile wretch did the exact same to thing me once, the stench was horrendous and I had to have my bin bleached and disinfencted . What a gross thing to do

Genuinely can't see the issue here. People on Mumsnet are weird about bins though.

Paying to have bins cleaned is crazy.

BananaSkinShoes · 16/03/2026 18:49

I don’t think it’s terrible under the circumstances you describe. As you said, you only did it because it was about to be collected. He’s obviously an uptight arsehole.

I have my bins cleaned every month!
£5 a month
I don’t want them stinking.

Harry12345 · 16/03/2026 18:51

Wouldn’t bother me if it’s about to be emptied but this thread has ensured I don’t do it with anyone else’s bin

Fatnearlyslim · 16/03/2026 18:51

Wow - the comments are a real eye opener and quite relevant as it was my bin day today and yes someone had put bagged shite in my bin, did I mind
NO I’d rather it be in my bin than left on the ground.
ps I don’t have any pets

Really? 😂 a bagged up dog shit was enough for you to get your bin bleached and disinfected? Why on earth did you not have the bin set on fire, just to make sure?

Morepositivemum · 16/03/2026 18:52

My mums bin is pristine, as is our elderly neighbour’s. What if in emptying the bin that single bag had been left somehow (we’ve had stuff left in the bin the odd time)? Would have ruined it!

Did you miss the bit where I said it was in the bin for around 60 seconds as the bin lorry was literally 2 or 3 houses away? Plus it was securely bagged.

Pricelessadvice · 16/03/2026 18:54

Don’t use other people’s bins for dog poo bags.
It’s just poor manners isn’t it?

CheekyRaven · 16/03/2026 18:55

This was an appropriate bin!! Get a grip people.. better than leaving ot on the side of the road, unbagged. Well done OP. I would not complain if you'd put it in my bim. No I am not a dog owner, or dog lover!

Do they smell even with the lid closed?

LancashireButterPie · 16/03/2026 18:57

Take him a bottle of wine and apologise.

DappledThings · 16/03/2026 18:58

Fleurdalys · 16/03/2026 18:53

Why?

It's so unnecessary. I find it hilarious but obviously people are welcone tow aste their money on whatever they want.

My bin is a bit grubby inside but what's the point of an outside bin being pristine? It just has bags in. Bags that are mostly clean on the outside and get taken out of it after a few days.

The level of prissiness someone has to have to worry about their outside bin being spotless is just funny.

The exact same thing? So a bagged poo sat in your bin for less than two minutes and that made your bin stink and need to be bleached. Sure it did.

EmmaSummerHat · 16/03/2026 19:00

Eww! Sorry but public bin or take it home. That’s horrible for the owner

Ginburee · 16/03/2026 19:04

Ithinkofawittyusernamethenforgetit · 16/03/2026 16:31

Mine was too - and my recycling often had old kebab trays slung on top so bin men wouldn’t take. You’d get the sign of shame tagged to it “contaminated contents - please empty and dispose” and sometimes even a letter in the post with a “how to recycle” leaflet that went straight in the recycling 🤣

Same here, random cans, coffee shop cups and a lot chucked in our garden.
That and the fox debris from ripping into the brown bin makes my garden a mess and I have to tidy every day.

Are you a dog person? If you don’t pick up poo regularly or don’t have kids in nappies or other caring responsibilities poo isn’t something you see regularly and the idea of a stranger’s (or their dog’s) poo in your landfill bin is utterly disgusting.

I think dog people have a bit of a blind spot when it comes to their dogs poo because they deal with it all the time. BIL walked several bags of dog shit through MILs kitchen one Christmas (when they weren’t even meant to bring the dog but that’s another story) while she was making turkey sandwiches, swinging them merrily he was!
