To put dog mess in a strangers bin?

AnnaQuayRules · 16/03/2026 16:01

I normally would never dream of doing this. However, today I was walking my dog along a road when he decided to crap on the grass verge. So of course I picked it up and bagged it.

It was bin day and everyone's bins were outside their houses. The bin lorry turned into the street and so, as it approached, I popped the bag into the nearest bin which was collected almost immediately.

However the man in the house came storming out and started shouting at me. He said I had no right to put anything in his bin. It got worse when I tried to explain, especially as he hadn't realised it was a dog bag. So I apologised and moved off with him still shouting down the road.

I would never have placed anything in anyone's bin whilst it's on their property, but these bins are all on the pavement waiting to be emptied. It was about 3/4 full, I placed the bag on top of what was there and the whole bin was emptied within about 60 seconds.

Was I really out of order?

I'd rather it was in my bin than on the floor.

Is it unreasonable? Yes a bit. Is it a big deal? No.

Franjipanl8r · 16/03/2026 19:10

Some of us don’t own dogs purely because the thought of their warm shit wrapped in plastic bags makes us retch. It’s honestly the most revolting thing I can think of, I definitely don’t want that on or in my property.

Even the sight of dog owners scooping turd into a bag with their hands makes me retch.

Orphlids · 16/03/2026 19:11

It’s things like this that are partly responsible for the growing divide between dog owners and the rest of us. I always liked dogs. They’re often sweet and fun. But lately, there are many dog owners whose behaviour is so entitled, or irritating, or disgusting, or dangerous that I find myself feeling negatively about dogs more and more.

Last Autumn, my village facebook page was full of posts from dog owners, furious that people were letting off fireworks. Once upon a time, I would have really felt for them, having to deal with a poor terrified animal. But last year, I just thought about how so many of those owners obviously didn’t give a shit about the impact their dogs have on others, but they expect everyone else to make sure their behaviour doesn’t hurt their dogs. Dog shit in other people’s bins, dog shit on the path, dogs left to bark endlessly through the day and night, dogs allowed to jump up at strangers, dogs chasing frightened children, dogs in cafes trying to get your cake, dogs in the play area in the park despite the “no dogs” sign. It’s all become completely routine. And if those with dogs don’t want to see a big anti-dog backlash, they need to make sure that their decision to have a dog doesn’t have a negative impact on others.

I’m not saying OP would do any of these other things, but it’s all cumulative, isn’t it?

I don't get the outrage, I would have done the same if the bins were out on the street waiting to be emptied. Also, technically bins aren't people's properties either, they belong to the council, so I think everyone needs to take a step back and stop being so petty.

Not where I live - bins are NOT provided by the council, my bin is my bin.

OP - You should have either lobbed it into the bin lorry yourself or taken it home.

It's so unnecessary. I find it hilarious but obviously people are welcone tow aste their money on whatever they want.

My bin is a bit grubby inside but what's the point of an outside bin being pristine? It just has bags in. Bags that are mostly clean on the outside and get taken out of it after a few days.

The level of prissiness someone has to have to worry about their outside bin being spotless is just funny.

A few days?
3 weeks here
For a couple of quid I prefer my bins disinfected thanks.

Nope

Yes they do

I think dog people have a bit of a blind spot when it comes to their dogs poo because they deal with it all the time. BIL walked several bags of dog shit through MILs kitchen one Christmas (when they weren’t even meant to bring the dog but that’s another story) while she was making turkey sandwiches, swinging them merrily he was!

That is gross and I have seen people do similar. (inside another persons house).
Why would you? Yuk!

KatiMaus · 16/03/2026 18:24

I pay to have my bin cleaned fortnightly.

If someone did this to me, they'd be picking the shit out of my bin, head first if necessary.

I have a particular issue with dog owners and dog shit. I once caught some idiot allowing their dog to shit at the bottom of my driveway as they were about to walk away. I told her that the contents would be returned to her through her letterbox if it wasn't dealt with.

Disgusting people with disgusting animals shitting everywhere. It's like a huge societal regression over the past few years.

I’ve always wondered what kind of person pays to have their bin cleaned. Every two weeks?? What are you doing to get it so dirty, and why is it so important to you that it’s clean? I’m honestly interested, I can think of so many things I’d rather spend money on.

Knock yourself out, it's your money.

But why do you need something that sits outside and contains nothing but bags of rubbish to be clean and disinfected? What's the point? I really don't get it.

mathanxiety · 16/03/2026 19:17

AnnaQuayRules · 16/03/2026 16:14

Well, that was my thinking. But clearly almost everyone else thinks I'm being unreasonable. I really thought that, because the bag would be in there for at most 60 seconds, it wouldn't be an issue. Obviously I misread the situation

Still not OK.

You should have waited and asked the bin men if they would take it.

Kevinisnotacatname · 16/03/2026 19:17

Completely unreasonable. Our council allow you 3 black bags of non recyclable waste every 3 weeks. If anything is NOT bagged correctly or loose they simply won't empty your bin.

Oh and I have to buy my own bin, the council don't provide it.

Filthy bugger.

brunettemic · 16/03/2026 19:18

Nothing wrong with it as far as I’m concerned in this situation. It’s bin day and is about to be emptied in literally minutes, if that. Putting in a council owned wheelie bin can putting it in a council owned regular bin.

FlaggedParrot · 16/03/2026 19:19

Absolutely no issue. It's a bin. It was bin day.
I can't get mad about someone putting rubbish in a bin on bin day. Not like it's going to prevent me using it if I had more to put in and it's being collected that day anyway.
Round here people bag dog shit and leave it on the grass next to where they collected it, or not pick it up at all. So putting it in a bin is heaps better but people will always find something petty to complain about.

Shocked at many of the replies.. But then am I? It is mumsnet of course everyone serves dinner out of their bin so can't bare to see it being used for putting something like bagged shit in ON BIN DAY 🙄

alexdgr8 · 16/03/2026 16:54

You can buy special deodorising disinfectant powder for bins.
I used to use it.
Also many people near here pay for a bin cleaning service.
A man with a power washer jet hose comes round.
I think bins will have to have a locking device soon.
Once they start charging by weight.
There is already the problem of passers by contaminating the bin with the wrong type of waste.
Most unfair to blame the householder for this.
The collectors can refuse to empty the bin if it has the wrong contents.

I dunno what planet you’re on but it’s not this one.

perfumed bins indeed 😇😇🫡

Browningpers · 16/03/2026 19:21

Amazed you thought this was reasonable. It’s dick moves like this that give all dog owners a bad name.

Madness, all those chemicals and wasted water for… what? A sense of being better than others I suppose. Honestly this thread is the most time I’ve ever spent thinking about bins.

Sooose · 16/03/2026 19:23

How about you ask the bin operatives if you can just sling it straight in the truck?
YABU. No wonder you got called out on it.

MargotLovesTom · 16/03/2026 19:26

It's a bin for rubbish which was going to be emptied within seconds. He wouldn't even have known the bag had been in there if he hadn't seen you put it in. I couldn't imagine being so uptight about a wheelie bin.

Neither but look at even just the replies above yours. Nowhere on earth could anyone be this petty about a rubbish bin as right here on this thread.
It's not like people put this bin in their house.

This is honestly mumsnet pearl clutching at its absolute finest. Out done yourself mumsnet!

I've just said, I have to store my bin quite close to my property, therefore I'd prefer to have the bloke with the hose to give it a quick blast every couple of weeks.

It's certainly not a statement of superiority on my behalf! I have to handle it every week, manoeuvre the thing around the garden, therefore I'd prefer it to be clean. In the summer, I clean it myself, but in the winter, once I'd finished work, id be the crazy lady washing her bin in the dark.

If you'd bothered to read the whole thread you'd know that the refuse collectors aren't allowed to do that here. No one can throw anything directly into the lorry - including the operatives

As it was about to be collected I’d be okay with it.

Fingalscave · 16/03/2026 19:35

@caffeinedependent if I caught you putting it in my bin I'd rub your nose in it.

But not inside your house, I presume? Maybe it’s under a window and there’s nowhere else? I find it bizarre to clean things outside the house, even more so to pay someone else to do it. We all handle our bins weekly, I wash my hands after and that seems to work fine.

Did you miss the bit where I said it was in the bin for around 60 seconds as the bin lorry was literally 2 or 3 houses away? Plus it was securely bagged.

Edited

You don't need to be so arsey with people who have taken the trouble to answer your question.

What you did would be nasty and offensive to many people as you are now discovering. It is not mitigated by the close proximity of the dustbin lorry, nor the flimsy little sack you put the shit in.

I wouldn't care if the dustbin man was standing next to the bin, waiting to empty it. I wouldn't want your dog's shit anywhere near it.

You keep saying you've learned a lesson and won't do it again, but at the same time keep trying to justify what you did. It's unacceptable to put your dog shit in other people's bins in any circumstances.

Take it home and put it in your own bin.
