To put dog mess in a strangers bin?

I normally would never dream of doing this. However, today I was walking my dog along a road when he decided to crap on the grass verge. So of course I picked it up and bagged it.

It was bin day and everyone's bins were outside their houses. The bin lorry turned into the street and so, as it approached, I popped the bag into the nearest bin which was collected almost immediately.

However the man in the house came storming out and started shouting at me. He said I had no right to put anything in his bin. It got worse when I tried to explain, especially as he hadn't realised it was a dog bag. So I apologised and moved off with him still shouting down the road.

I would never have placed anything in anyone's bin whilst it's on their property, but these bins are all on the pavement waiting to be emptied. It was about 3/4 full, I placed the bag on top of what was there and the whole bin was emptied within about 60 seconds.

Was I really out of order?

It wouldn't bother me if it was something else but dog poo I'd probably be annoyed, in case the bag spills on something sharp and it goes all over the bin. Also don't people get fined sometimes for putting things in the wrong bins, how would they prove it wasn't theirs. Anyway no harm done, people can be very possessive about anything to do with their property, things like using their empty parking space to do a 3 point turn etc, its just how it is.

Probably a good idea to do it every time.

You know this won't happen, otherwise they wouldn't be here on a public forum arguing that this is a-okay. This, or posting stuff that's deliberately controversial because they know it will get them a reaction.

You don’t clean your bin? That’s minging. At least once a month I spray mine with Jeys wipe the outside and clean inside them with an old mop. During the pandemic local bin men were asking us to wipe the handles of our bins before we put it out.

It's really not minging. It's a bin into, which goes rubbish, and so gets dirty. I give mine a once over with the hose about every 2 years and it's fine.

I don't get the outrage tbh. If someone did this, I really wouldn't give a toss. At the end of the day, it's council property on council land, when it's been out out for bin day. If it's just about to be emptied, I really wouldn't care.

That has never happened to me in all my years of dog owning.

it happens to me all the time if I chuck a bag of my cat's poo into my bin on bin day loose rather than tied up inside a bin bag. plus the bags are v thin and split easily 🤷‍♀️

BigSkies2022 · 16/03/2026 18:24

Well, I am batshit crazy about the lazy sods who don’t wheel their bins back into their own property boundaries after the collection, but just leave them on the pavement all week. They carry their bagged rubbish out to the bin and dump it. Quite often, it’s overflowing. They pick up the rubbish that overflows onto the pavement, so by the time the bin collection is due, it can be a right mess.

So I make an exception to the rule ‘My dog’s poo, my bin’ for these people and I put the poo bag in there. If they don’t like it, there’s an easy solution to hand.

KatiMaus · 16/03/2026 18:24

I pay to have my bin cleaned fortnightly.

If someone did this to me, they'd be picking the shit out of my bin, head first if necessary.

I have a particular issue with dog owners and dog shit. I once caught some idiot allowing their dog to shit at the bottom of my driveway as they were about to walk away. I told her that the contents would be returned to her through her letterbox if it wasn't dealt with.

Disgusting people with disgusting animals shitting everywhere. It's like a huge societal regression over the past few years.

dpbarbie9 · 16/03/2026 18:25

Someone did this in my old house and the bin men wouldn't empty my bin as all rubbish had to be in a black bin bag not just loose

Peachie31 · 16/03/2026 18:26

AnnaQuayRules · 16/03/2026 16:12

I'd have taken it home and put it in my bin. Which is what I always do.

So just continue to do that instead of being lazy and gross by putting it in someone else's bin.

cramptramp · 16/03/2026 18:27

Because the bin lorry was approaching you were ok to dump it in a bin. It was only going to be there a minute or two. Wouldn’t bother me in the slightest.

Noodles1234 · 16/03/2026 18:29

Yes, very out of order, take it home to your own bin as it stinks and offensive to the majority.

manateeplushie · 16/03/2026 18:30

I don't see the problem. It was in there for a minute, who gives a crap (pun intended)

WestEaste · 16/03/2026 18:31

Look, posting about it here won’t help. You’re just ruminating unnecessarily.

You surely can’t be that shocked that people don’t want something else’s shit left in their household bins. They don’t know you, to immediately trust how well contained it is, nor how thorough the bin men will be.

Poo is probably the most undesirable thing someone else can put in your bin, the potential clean up job is disgusting enough that you’d say no to unnecessary individuals using your bin to dispose of their poo. It’s not hard to understand why he felt you were in the wrong. Get over it. You’re not perfect

floralandfresh · 16/03/2026 18:31

I literally couldn’t care less someone putting wrapped up poo in my bin. I’d be glad they’d picked it up, it irritates me when people don’t pick it up.

MandingoAteMyBaby · 16/03/2026 18:34

Just take it home.

The dog is a burden YOU chose to impose on society, and YOU can put the waste through your OWN bin.

If I shat into a carrier bag and put it in your bin you’d be upset no doubt.

Happyasapiginmuck1 · 16/03/2026 18:35

Perfectly ok to do that. It was in a bag and went in a council bin that was out for collection, the bloke doesn't own it. I've done this plenty of times and will continue to do so. I also litter pick and put other people's litter in my bin.

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 16/03/2026 18:35

Dog owner here and I have also accosted some entitled prick who thought they could dump their dog shit in my bin.

I pay a small fortune to have my bin cleaned and sanitised after every empty because rotting dog shit stinks. I dont have it there for some lazy passer by to decide they can't be bothered to take it home with them or use the correct bins around the village.

Jellytotsapplepie · 16/03/2026 18:36

Knittedanimal · 16/03/2026 16:10

Of course not! What sort of idiot gets areated about rubbish being put in a bin?

People that sit at windows watching their bins on bin day

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/03/2026 18:38

Someone walked onto my OSP to put their dogpooh bag in my bin.
Even more annoying than the stench or the fact they walked across my space ... I don't have a dog , my NDN on both sides did !
So their bins wouldn't have noticed
Bore a grudge forever

ChirpyTealFox · 16/03/2026 18:41

Yabu. I own 2 dogs and wouldn't do that. I don't even put them loose in my own bin. I carry the bags home with me if I don't come across a public bin

LarsenBiceshelf · 16/03/2026 18:41

Ugh. Our bin men won't touch the entire bin if it has a dog poo bag in it, so YABU.

Also, while we're at it, can I get a side-eye from everyone at some people (labrador-owning woman in my village, I'm looking at you) who let their male dogs piss up everyone's recycling bins while on their walk.

Parsleyforme · 16/03/2026 18:42

Judging by the comments on here I completely missed the memo that we’re supposed to be cleaning inside our outdoor bin?? I don’t understand why when it only gets emptied to put a bag of rubbish in?

OneFunBrickNewt · 16/03/2026 18:43

I was going to say just chuck it in the back of the lorry until I remember doing that with some chewing gum whilst overtaking a dustbin lorry in France and getting a stream of non-GCSE curriculum French aimed at me from the crew- I did manage to get it in though.

So that it doesn't rot and stink obviously.
