Foul language on here.

AIBU to expect people to use less foul language on here. I’m put off by people using c , f.
Im not a prude and believe me there is many a time I’ve used the F word in conversations but wouldn’t dream of using it on here and never the c word.
Edited as deleted the asterisks - obviously doesn’t like them.

People on here think it makes them edgy and modern and not at all property owning middle class, so little prospect I'm afraid, OP.

I hate to point this out, but ‘fuck’ and ‘cunt’ are in The Canterbury Tales. They couldn’t be less edgy and modern.

RosesAndHellebores · 15/03/2026 23:45

Asking for a friend, is NetMums still going?

Can someone tell me the Anglo Saxon word for procreation without swearing please?

Lemondrizzle4A · 15/03/2026 13:52

Genuinely not bothered by people swearing and I fully understand that swearing is sometimes the ultimate way of showing the depth of feeling you have. My point is that some people seem to resort to swearing in their post almost every other word. I also absolutely abhor the C word. Perhaps that is an age thing.

But still, what is the nature of the shock? And why do you see it as "resort" to swearing?? I think you have a mental model of the world where we all secretly WANT to eff and Jeff, and see these as words of power and insult. But we keep a tight lid on it, constrained by taboo and the fear of social shame...except sometimes we can't help it and it boils out? With that view of things, I can see why you would look at a post that is very sweary and sort of think "Oh dear, they have let themselves down!"

But I promise you for some of us swear words are simply among the words we can choose to use for emphasis; fucking is no more to me than an informal "very". With a hint of it slightly being funnier, because it implies greater frustration.

Do you abhor the C word because it is patriarchally oppressive to use women's bodies as the ultimate insult? That must be the reason, because honestly any other reason for it being "the worst word" is internalised misogyny.

I'm aware, thanks. I said that's how they perceive it. Not the same thing.

But I don’t think anyone does think it’s at all ‘edgy’, far less modern.

To database is a verb. Onto a database, which is a noun.

Well it shouldn’t be. Urgh.

Sorry Cambridge University Netball Club. Senior moment. 😂

are you sure you didn’t mean Cambridge University Netball Team?Confused

(I once heard that Northumbria uni nearly got called the City University of Newcastle upon Tyne)

Really? Some rather performative replies to this very thread suggest otherwise.

Grin ha! It's a nice campus. I'll out myself if I say any more, but that's really tickled me.

Brilliant. As usual first reply nails it 🤣

It wasn't the first.

I do not understand some people's enthusiasm for this nonsensical cliché on here.

I’m reminded of that classic MN response off you pop, cuntychops.

Haven't seen that in a while! 🤣

but it seems like the absolutely oerfect time to roll it out!

ErrolTheDragon · 16/03/2026 00:09

why? How do you ask someone to add incidents? Of course, you would say’ Please can you database that?’ I really wouldn’t worry about this, especially when people use such foul language. Which is what this post is about…..

I’m more offended by someone seemingly using “database” as a verb than I am by any swearing.

You might be alarmed by our isolation manager. She would eat you alive! Look it up - database is a verb. Did you go to school?

threescoops · 16/03/2026 05:49

The f word used to have real shock value but has become ubiquitous. My teenage grandsons use it in general conversation in front of me and I don’t like it. As for the c word I’d never use it because using the vernacular for our vaginas as a term of abuse has always struck me as contemptuous of women, maybe something to do with men’s resentment of our power. It seems odd when women say it to insult other women. I suppose it’s lost its meaning. But I realise it’s all become normal and accept I’m the odd one out.

I love this post @threescoops -

Not because I agree entirely (I don’t) but because unlike most on here; you’re actually thinking about the impact words have on you and others

there are so many folk on this forum who love to browbeat others, and this topic is the latest instalment - I was literally waiting for someone to tell us about Chaucer and use that as a justification .

ToffeePennie · 16/03/2026 06:44

What do you define foul language?
Because during the 1300s Fuck was just a common use word. And a nickname. It only became a “swear word” during WW2.
Would you call someone a “Prince of Wales”? A very very nasty swear word and insult during Shakespearean times…
Im sorry but I don’t buy into the social constructs that certain words are only intended to make you seem less intelligent or more negative. Your so called “foul language” was considered normal a few years ago in the grand scheme of things and there are certain words we use today that in a few hundred years will be considered vulgar.
Language is ever evolving, thank fuck!

Every single poster who has gleefully said "off you go to Netmums, off you fuck!" is a bully.

There you go - I said it.

You lot revel in saying "fuck" and cunt" on here to intimidate posters who aren't comfortable with that language.

You belittle them into thinking they're not "cool" somehow by adopting the language of the in club on here.

How much more interesting it would have been to read an analysis of why middle-class women on Mumsnet seem to find the need to let it out by swearing in a "tinkly-laugh" kind of way, all knowing and asides etc

Instead, we just get page after page of posters trying to out-swear each other in what they think are creative ways, which instead reads like a long thread of people trying to ingratiate with each other.

YANBU @Lemondrizzle4A , it's tiresome and I actually agree with you.

Good points, well made.

Thing is, I personally swear a lot, with both the words being discussed here and more. And worse. It's normal, everyday language for me and this has zero shock power, it's just emphasis or exclamation - or frustration of course. Or humourous. Language is so useable and those words especially so. I do get that some people get 'terrorised' by them but realistically I feel that somebody coming onto a forum renowned for swearing and starting some holier-than-thou post trying to stop everyone else from doing so because they don't like it is somewhat dictatorial, rather deranged, totally irrelevant and absolutely pathetic.

I've purposely not sworn. My instinctive response normally would absolutely have been sweary and I'd not regard it as being bullying.

both seemed to be used. Miss the old days when you could say this without getting banned for causing hurty feelings. Yet it wax far lass nasty here years ago 💁🏻‍♀️

Naunet · 16/03/2026 08:27

Is this your first day on the internet?! Why would you ever expect there not to be swearing?

OhDear111 · 16/03/2026 10:13

@Naunet Because it’s not necessary and diminishes an argument. It’s essentially unpleasant. People are just unpleasant these days though and inarticulate. Unable to express themselves in a reasonable way and it’s sad.

AnnieLummox · 16/03/2026 10:40

How does it diminish an argument though? I’ve seen that claim many times, but never with anything concrete to back it up.

OhDear111 · 16/03/2026 11:09

@AnnieLummox It’s a default word or string of words that don’t articulate an argument. For example, in court, no barrister would be allowed to swear. Or a witness. They have to find words to state the exact position of the case or what they saw or believe to be the truth. Human beings are capable of that.

It diminishes the argument because it’s an outburst and not a crafted response. This is why newspaper articles don’t include swearing for example. Or debates in Parliament. We are better than that. I tend to think people who swear and write it down are lazy and inarticulate and don’t have much of an argument. Just an angry response. So I gloss over it. Therefore it has no resonance and doesn’t further a discussion.
