Really don't like dogs being in virtually every cafe now

I know another one, and yes this is quite trivial really.

Last week we went to a gorgeous new cafe, sat down, and within a minute I realised a large dog had appeared and was licking dds outstretched hand (she was delighted of course) then we had to get up and go and wash before eating, only to see the dog licking her hands again. Argh. Then it turned around and was wagging it's tail into me (I'm unfortunately allergic to fur and would rather not have to have fur on my clothes) - we werent even that close to the other table. It's just so annoying and I know I can ask it's owners to keep it away from us but seems a bit cruel to the dog and I jolly well shouldn't have to, they should be keeping an eye themselves without me having to have an awkward chat. Manners are meant to make everyone feel comfortable and not force people into seeming unreasonable because they don't want to get involved with the animal.

Then this afternoon, different cafe, on my own this time and got the fright of my life when all of a sudden a dog snarled and snapped at a child a few tables away, who of course screamed and was very distressed, someone could have had a heart attack!

I am going to have to be more mindful of places which don't have dogs in future I think.

And I imagine I am probably going to be told I am being unreasonable. I just want a coffee in peace without slobbering or snarling dogs

I frequent a coffee shop that has dog friendliness as its USP and supports Guide Dogs, and I can honestly say that ai have never actually been bothered by a dog in there. They are usually quietly minding their own business.

Ohhh CoffeeLab?

Amazing coffee and such lovely cafes.

The worst I experienced was a dog in an upstairs tearoom venue. The tea room was small and had carpet throughout. Dog kept doing that shaking thing like they do after a swim. Fur and fleas and dust all over our afternoon tea. Absolutely grim.

You saw fleas land in your tea?
I call bullshit.

I didn't mind dogs until a recent experience, where someone came into a cafe with dogs and sat opposite us. There was no way I was going to try and eat from a low table with 4 dogs slobbering over it, so we moved. The woman with the dogs made loud passive aggressive comments throughout our stay. I haven't been back.

Byeckythump · 13/03/2026 18:21

Totally agree, I hate it. There are two cafes in my village, both small and both let dogs in. You can barely walk past a closely packed table without an inquisitive nose sniffing your hands. It’s horrible and of course the dog owners assume that I should be delighted that their precious dog is saying hello. When a particularly stinky dog is in the whole place smells and I’ve walked out before, no way do I want to eat around that. I’ve also seen the cafe owners stroke dogs and then go straight to food prep which is so grim.

I don’t mind dogs, a bit nervous of them perhaps, it’s the selfish blinkered owners fault.

Must be great not stepping over prams or roaming children. Dogs are always under tables .

Obviously the dogs one has to step over aren't under tables, or I wouldn't have to step over them.

"got the fright of my life when all of a sudden a dog snarled and snapped at a child a few tables away, who of course screamed and was very distressed, someone could have had a heart attack!"

"I just do not expect to come into contact and have to deal with other families fluids when I'm trying to relax and have paid for expensive food and coffees"

Peak Mumsnet catastrophizing.

Funny I don’t think I’ve rarely seen a dog not under a table when I’ve spotted them in cafes. The very few times I have they’re right next to their owners and your bum would have to brush against said owners face if you were stepping over their dog.

I went with my mum and her greyhound to a newly opened cafe today. It has a dog friendly bit which is basically an enclosed outside area.
It was packed, but we found a table. Dog led on his mat on the floor and was fine. People on the table next to us kept making comments to each other that they wanted us to hear in a passive aggressive way. Things like the dog stunk. He did not. He was slobbering over their food. He was on the floor and he does not slobber. Oh and how awful it was that he was occasionally having the audacity to look at them.
By the way, we were sat in the dogs welcome bit and he was also the only dog there.

The bacon sandwiches and oat milk lattes we had were gorgeous though. Would go again.

Sorry to break it to you, but all dogs smell. I think owners must stop noticing it because they often claim they don’t!

TSW12 · 13/03/2026 18:25

I have two dogs who I love to bits but I would never take them inside a cafe or any shop tbh. It has to be seriously unhygienic.

Cherrytree86 · 13/03/2026 18:26

It’s when people sit their dogs on sofas or chairs in cafes that really pisses me off. I don’t wanna sit on a chair in my nice clothes that your dogs shitty unwashed hairy arse has just frequented.

But sticky hands or perfume is ok?

@YeOldeGreyhound

yeah, they do. They stink. Their fur, skin, ears, breath, arse will all kick out a stench. If you have a dog and you love it, you become immune….others don’t though.

GoldenCupsatHarvestTime · 13/03/2026 18:27

You should have washed her hands before eating anyway… and I don’t think anyone is having a heart attack because a dog snapped and a child squealed?

I understand not wanting them there due to allergies though. I think that outdoor seating is nice for pet owners but they don’t need to go inside… my dog included. Although pubs I do think are dog places!

perfume fine. Sticky hands not great but preferable to shit.

There’s a very annoying man who brings his small dog into a Caffè Nero I sometimes go to in a local town. He can’t be arsed to put it on a lead and it wanders around every table. He gets extremely annoyed when anyone asks him to keep the dog under control.

I actually have no issue with well-behaved dogs - probably wouldn’t even notice one that’s just under a table. But there are a growing minority of owners with dogs who haven’t been trained to behave.

I suspect their children would be equally annoying / badly socialised!

I don't see her dog often, and he really does not smell. Greyhounds are not a breed known for the typical dog smell.
Everything smells. The other people in the cafe also had their own smells.
The people next to us were complaining about a non issue and were being PA and twats. Complaining about a dog in a dog friendly area in a dog friendly cafe.

Oooof some perfumes give me a migraine. Blinding headache and nausea. And some cleaning products.

Perfume isn’t for me. It makes me feel sick and I definitely don’t want it transferring to my clothes.
