Really don't like dogs being in virtually every cafe now

1000 replies

Wishididntseemsogrumpy · 13/03/2026 16:47

I know another one, and yes this is quite trivial really.

Last week we went to a gorgeous new cafe, sat down, and within a minute I realised a large dog had appeared and was licking dds outstretched hand (she was delighted of course) then we had to get up and go and wash before eating, only to see the dog licking her hands again. Argh. Then it turned around and was wagging it's tail into me (I'm unfortunately allergic to fur and would rather not have to have fur on my clothes) - we werent even that close to the other table. It's just so annoying and I know I can ask it's owners to keep it away from us but seems a bit cruel to the dog and I jolly well shouldn't have to, they should be keeping an eye themselves without me having to have an awkward chat. Manners are meant to make everyone feel comfortable and not force people into seeming unreasonable because they don't want to get involved with the animal.

Then this afternoon, different cafe, on my own this time and got the fright of my life when all of a sudden a dog snarled and snapped at a child a few tables away, who of course screamed and was very distressed, someone could have had a heart attack!

I am going to have to be more mindful of places which don't have dogs in future I think.

And I imagine I am probably going to be told I am being unreasonable. I just want a coffee in peace without slobbering or snarling dogs

Yes exactly! And the hatred is not irrational at all. As outlined on this thread, there are many totally reasonable reasons why a person might not like dogs. It is forced to become hatred because dog people can’t bloody well leave them at home and have to put them in your face all the time.

My dog never went in anyone's face.
But you just don't like them existing.

You’re right. I don’t. Many others feel the same. Many others still wouldn’t feel the same if they weren’t everywhere, but they are, so they do. That’s the summary of the thread - stop imposing dogs on people.

You are not being imposed on by seeing a dog in the distance in the park.

Harhar · 20/03/2026 12:50

My take on the thread is stop thinking the world should bend to your preferences and if you weren’t so thoroughly unlikeable more people might care about your feelings.

What about guide dogs? In your unrealistic utopia, would blind people be allowed to be out and about with their dogs? (Bearing in mind that it would be discriminatory to say they can’t.)

Also, what about police dogs/sheepdogs etc? Are they to be banned from being properly exercised just because you’re too precious to cope with even seeing a dog?

And not all puppies in one litter qualify for these roles. Unless there’s a cull (which will never happen), they will end up as someone’s pet and need exercise. So you’re stuck with seeing dogs outdoors, I’m afraid.

I’m not a dog owner, as I said, but can’t imagine being so self-centred as to think other people shouldn’t have the right to take their dogs for walks.

eastegg · 20/03/2026 13:55

The question ‘what about guide dogs?’ illustrates perfectly what has gone wrong with the thread. It was intended to be, and up to a point was, about entitled and anti-social behaviour by dog owners and how this affects an increasing number of public spaces. Loads of posters, including dog lovers, had many examples of how it’s become a problem.

A minority want to shut the debate down because they don’t like it, and come up with rather weak points like ‘find places where dogs aren’t allowed’, completely ignoring that things like dogs being allowed to shit on carpeted floors in shops might warrant a slightly less dismissive response.

Then, after this kind of goading, a poster comes along and makes some slightly more anti-dog, rather than just anti-crap owner, comments. And don’t the ones who want to shut down the debate just love that. Look how much attention is then given to that poster, to detract from the actual problem. It’s so transparent!

So here we are with ‘what about guide dogs?’. Perfectly trained, perfectly controlled creatures with a social purpose, protected by law, which the thread was so obviously never intended to be about.

A masterclass in deflection.

That’s my take on the thread. And on that note, bye. It’s become a total waste of time.

No - a dog as it exists today is not an animal in the true sense. It has not evolved, it has been created. It’s why dogs are actually toxic to nature and wildlife.

This is factually correct. These frankenstein animals are genetic freakshows. To the extent that some are so inbred that they have massive health problems.

All this for a biological plaything to amuse humans.

Talkingoutofmypants · 20/03/2026 14:27

So many posters agreeing early on in this thread that all dogs should be kept under control and that there are lots of dog friendly and dog free places to chose from.

Yet 39 pages in and there are still 'dogs aren't animals' and 'your precious fur baby' type posts.

I'm certain Mumsnet has some kind of arsehole generator designed to create these nonsense threads in order to boost advertising revenue.

I thought the royal family threads were peculiar but the anti dog guys are in a whole world of their own.

It really isn't factually correct that dogs aren't animals you know.
You can look this stuff up so that you don't appear so stupid.

Talkingoutofmypants · 20/03/2026 14:32

Humans have lived with dogs for over 40,000 years.
This isn't going to change because some peculiar wind up merchants on MN can't stop whining and talking shit.

Nobody is forced to hate.
You've chosen that course for yourself. It's really ugly.

I apologise. My point really was that it wouldn’t be possible to ban dogs from going for public points, because where do you draw the line? We need working dogs (not just guide dogs, I made that clear), and these working dogs need exercise. And not all puppies in every litter qualify to be these working dogs and they end up as someone’s pet. And they need to be taken for walks. And so it goes on.

As has just been said, dogs have lived with humans for thousands of years, that isn’t going to stop. So frothing about it is a waste of your energy basically.

And yes, some dogs are badly behaved (thanks to their owners), a problem which has got worse since COVID. That annoys decent dog owners as much as anyone else, as is clear from this thread. But I don’t think it’s as bad as some posters on MN try to present it as.

BunnyFrock · 20/03/2026 14:57

I always hope they're some kind of troll/bot and not real people because if so I wonder how they're treating animals in the real world

As far as I can, I completely ignore them. I can't ignore them when they invade my space. Which is often.

I love animals, but I totally agree with you.
Also some dog owners seem to assume that everyone will love their dog.

But that doesn’t indicate that all those who voted YANBU hate dogs, not at all! I voted that way, and so did a lot of dog owners, no doubt, many of whom have agreed with the OP on this thread. So it doesn’t prove that this poster’s hatred isn’t irrational at all.

I know, but that PP was saying she didn’t want to see dogs outdoors either, they should stay at home according to her. Because they must never shit in public.

I quite agree where dogs in cafes are concerned BTW, at least when they block the way to the bar/toilets. Or when they bark.

Aside from all the reasons why dogs are a pita, I am allergic. Dogs make me feel like utter shite. Dog owners care not a jot which is what has led to them being flipping everywhere. I’m sure which bit of that is irrational tbh and no you can’t just take an antihistamine - even at a 4x dosage it’s not enough.

My DH is allergic, too, as I said earlier, and I know that it’s worse for him than he usually lets on.

But it isn’t true that all dogs owners don’t care. We find that the majority do care (like I do, about visitors to our house who are allergic to cats). As always, there’s a minority that spoil things.

I often see buggies blocking the way to the toilets/counter in coffee shops.

Yeah I just don't like dogs in cafes and shops or jumping at me. I've no problem with them going outside as long as poo is bagged up and they are under control. For some people owning a pet is good for their mental health and I've nothing against that.

Personally, I’d also like to see the UK adopt the Spanish expectation that dog owners carry a bottle of water and disinfectant with them and use it to wash away their dogs’ urine. I am so over the green ring around every building, bollard and lamp-post in the country 🤢
