Really don't like dogs being in virtually every cafe now

Wishididntseemsogrumpy · 13/03/2026 16:47

I know another one, and yes this is quite trivial really.

Last week we went to a gorgeous new cafe, sat down, and within a minute I realised a large dog had appeared and was licking dds outstretched hand (she was delighted of course) then we had to get up and go and wash before eating, only to see the dog licking her hands again. Argh. Then it turned around and was wagging it's tail into me (I'm unfortunately allergic to fur and would rather not have to have fur on my clothes) - we werent even that close to the other table. It's just so annoying and I know I can ask it's owners to keep it away from us but seems a bit cruel to the dog and I jolly well shouldn't have to, they should be keeping an eye themselves without me having to have an awkward chat. Manners are meant to make everyone feel comfortable and not force people into seeming unreasonable because they don't want to get involved with the animal.

Then this afternoon, different cafe, on my own this time and got the fright of my life when all of a sudden a dog snarled and snapped at a child a few tables away, who of course screamed and was very distressed, someone could have had a heart attack!

I am going to have to be more mindful of places which don't have dogs in future I think.

And I imagine I am probably going to be told I am being unreasonable. I just want a coffee in peace without slobbering or snarling dogs

There is no point complaining. Market forces means that the owners who can’t leave their homes without their dogs are a group that businesses want to cater for.

You only have to read posts by people who say they prefer dogs to humans, children are dirtier than dogs, they would save their dog before a child etc to realise that some people now elevate dogs above human beings.

The pandemic played a part in making some people even more antisocial and socially inept. They did not train their dogs but acquired them for company. And now they cannot leave them at home. Because the poor dog cannot cope alone, and the people cannot cope going anywhere without their canine friends.

Resistance is futile OP. But bad dog owners are very annoying. They put their dogs over decent behaviour. And they get a bad name for the many good owners too.

The AIBU poll would dispute that.

I think we're too polite. And dog apologists too loud.

Must be very annoying for responsible dog owners.

How is this at all relevant? Poor parenting on some peoples parts is no reason to allow animals everywhere.

Some people hate dogs and simply can not cope with existing in the same space as them, even if they are well behaved.
A previous poster made the point that some people feel the same about kids but badly behaved ones get noticed more.

Ergh, I had this earlier this week. Just finishing up in Costa when a couple came in; just plonked their dog down on a seat. I spoke to staff as I left so I hope they said something. I mean really, why does a dog have to use a seat which someone then has to sit in afterwards.

My local Costa seems to attract parents who think the tables that people dine on is an appropriate place to change a nappy.

YeOldeGreyhound · 13/03/2026 17:26

So nothing bad actually happened?

I don't want to eat my lunch next to a hairy animal. If I did I would chose to go to the zoo.

I expect it's a simple business decision for the cafe owners: if the income generated from the dog owners is greater than the income lost from those who go elsewhere, they'll stick with their dog-friendly policy.

And who can blame them?

Has anyone actually studied the lost business? I guess they could do a before and after?

I agree that toddlers can be badly behaved too. Leaving them behind is slightly more problematic.

Every time I go into Costa the tables are covered in crumbs, tissue, puddles and other human detritus.

I am glad I don't feel the same as I would never eat next to my partner 😂

RobinInTheCrabApple · 13/03/2026 17:56

I've just spent the last fortnight working in central London and central Cambridge. I ate out in cafes, pubs and restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner the whole time and I can honestly say I didn't see one dog in any of those places.

Being a regular on MN I often see threads saying dogs are everywhere and so I picked up very quickly that there were none and kept looking. Absolutely none. Some being walking on the Greens and parks but none in anywhere I ate.

Nevermind17 · 13/03/2026 17:57

Periperi2025 · 13/03/2026 17:48

I imagine it's a business decision on behalf of the owners, who see that people with dogs are good, repeat customers.

Also, I've been a paramedic for 20 years and I'm yet to see anyone whose had a heart attack on account of a dog growling.

Edited

I got blue lighted to hospital when a German shepherd ripped my scalp off. I’d now prefer to drink a coffee in peace without the constant fear of a repeat performance, thank you.

HelenaWilson · 13/03/2026 17:57

Funny I’m always dodging scooters, bikes and prams.

I dodge those too. But this thread is about dogs, not scooters bikes and prams.

Well somebody decided to moan about dogs using pavements- they’re allowed to.

Children aren’t kept in zoos.

AnotherBretonTop · 13/03/2026 17:59

It is even worse when the staff pet and feed dogs then immediately proceed to make and serve food. I am sure this is against hygiene standards. No issue with dogs in general but disagree with them in shops and restaurants.

FishPie2 · 13/03/2026 18:00

I live in a year round popular seaside resort so not only do we get local dogs but the ones belonging to visitors and most of them seem to bring one or more with them.
Last Monday 8 of us went out for brunch and just as we were going to order a couple walked in with 2 dogs that could only be described as almost the size of a Shetland Pony so we all looked at each other as if to say - no way - and told the server to cancel our order as we were going. After a quick chat she said they couldn't say yes just to small dogs.
All I can say is thank goodness for Wetherspoons, not our first choice but had a decent glass of wine and a snack. At least they don't allow dogs on the premises except guide dogs.

Tiptopflipflop · 13/03/2026 18:01

Allowing dogs everywhere is making life very difficult for guide dog owners and other assistance dog owners.

For some odd reason lots of people think it is okay to take poorly trained and dog reactive dogs to cafes etc now, who then growl and lunge at assistance dogs who are just trying to mind their own business and get on with their jobs.

Even the owners of friendly dogs often have them on long leads and allow them to approach working dogs, which is very unfair on the dog doing its best to focus.

Very annoying. If you are taking your dog to a dog friendly place it needs to be perfectly behaved and kept out of everyone else's way.

I have never seen a pet dog lunge at an assistance dog.

However, I have seen someone with 3 assistance dogs, 2 of which were fighting each other.

Maryamlouise · 13/03/2026 18:04

I was surprised to see two dogs off lead wandering around the kids area in the library yesterday

MarxistMags · 13/03/2026 18:04

I agree too. I am a dog lover but everywhere we go for coffee has a least 1 dog in it now, and usually 2. I just don't like it. Dogs and food don't mix.

Kirbert2 · 13/03/2026 18:04

I absolutely hate it too. There's no consideration at all towards those with allergies or who are afraid of dogs.

I avoid cafes with my son now because he is scared of dogs and he just can't relax at all. It's a shame.

DuracellbunnyAPlus · 13/03/2026 18:04

I'm totally with you. Dogs and cats both trigger my asthma, and frankly I am just not a dog person. Children might run around and make noise, but they generally don't jump up at you or lick you.

It’s about somebody moaning about what they don’t like in cafes. We can all do that.

At the end of the day cafe owners will
serve and welcome who they choose and who pays their bills. Their establishment their rules.

WhatNoRaisins · 13/03/2026 18:05

Agree OP but with all the lonely people who now use pet dogs as relationship substitutes I don't see anything changing.
