Really don't like dogs being in virtually every cafe now

I know another one, and yes this is quite trivial really.

Last week we went to a gorgeous new cafe, sat down, and within a minute I realised a large dog had appeared and was licking dds outstretched hand (she was delighted of course) then we had to get up and go and wash before eating, only to see the dog licking her hands again. Argh. Then it turned around and was wagging it's tail into me (I'm unfortunately allergic to fur and would rather not have to have fur on my clothes) - we werent even that close to the other table. It's just so annoying and I know I can ask it's owners to keep it away from us but seems a bit cruel to the dog and I jolly well shouldn't have to, they should be keeping an eye themselves without me having to have an awkward chat. Manners are meant to make everyone feel comfortable and not force people into seeming unreasonable because they don't want to get involved with the animal.

Then this afternoon, different cafe, on my own this time and got the fright of my life when all of a sudden a dog snarled and snapped at a child a few tables away, who of course screamed and was very distressed, someone could have had a heart attack!

I am going to have to be more mindful of places which don't have dogs in future I think.

And I imagine I am probably going to be told I am being unreasonable. I just want a coffee in peace without slobbering or snarling dogs

I know business can lose custom by not allowing dogs given the trend for dogs now being taken everywhere and the entitlement of some dog owners however I’m with you. The only dogs that should be allowed are assistance dogs.

Edited

They also lose custom by allowing dogs. I have a dog but he doesn't go shopping with me or out to eat in fact the only time he is allowed in the car is to go to Vets.
Many dog owners think their mutt is a child and that everyone loves it because it is cute. I would be pissed off if i was trying to eat and someone else's child came over to my table.
People need to remember their manners.

Lots of things smell!in cafes- wet raincoats, nappies, wind, types of food….

I remember when the smoking ban came into effect. Pubs absolutely stank of farts.

@Wr3ck

I would rather have perfume on my jeans than traces of dog shit

I’d rather not have traces of bogies, shit and germs from other people’s kids but such is life.

Cathmawr · 13/03/2026 18:31

I like dogs, I don't like them in cafes. Specifically when they are barking in cafes- don't mind them so much when they're quiet!

topcat2014 · 13/03/2026 18:32

I'm with you, @Wishididntseemsogrumpyall dogs ming, and that's before we get onto allergies..

Thatsnotevenmyusername · 13/03/2026 18:32

Totally agree OP.

Every cafe I go in to lately home some kind of dog. My DD who has SEN is terrified of dogs and we have had to leave cafe’s before as a dog was present and she was terrified (even if it was a small one.) She also has asthma and recently had allergy testing and is allergic to dogs. Dogs have no place in eateries!

I say this as an owner of 2 very old dogs (who are kept separate in the house from DD.)

They don’t though, that’s why they welcome them.

@Wr3ck

you would rather sit on a seat that a dogs arse has just been sat on?? Really?? Hmm 🤔

Dog smell is just a smell. I don't find it offensive.

Dappy777 · 13/03/2026 18:33

I don't mind dogs. It's usually the humans who ruin a cafe or bar.

fivepastmidnight · 13/03/2026 18:34

I don't mind places that let dogs in although I don't take my own dog because he's needy for attention. I wouldn't be able to relax and drink my coffee .All the places that do have them in seem to have dog friendly signs in the window before you go in. I've never been suddenly surprised by a dog somewhere. I would rather a dog than most kids . Maybe it depends on the area in which you live but I thought that majority of places are still dog free.

Perfume isn’t for me. It makes me feel sick and I definitely don’t want it transferring to my clothes.

Same! The neurologist I saw about my migraines said certain perfumes were the trigger I suspected they were. Along with Zoflora and some other cleaning products. Close proximity to the wrong scent knocks me out for the day. I dread walking past Duty Free at airports for this reason

it isn’t just life though. Dogs can be disallowed from cafes (exception of service dogs) just like how it used to be. It’s not essential for dogs to be in these places. Just because humans have germs/smells doesn’t mean it’s ok.

Not all dogs sit in a way that their arse is touching a seat.
And way more humans are farting on the seats you are sitting on anyway.

Absolutely having sat on all mention of crap left where kids have sat.

I think it is area dependent. All the cafes in my local town allow dogs. People with allergies or phobias would simply not be able to go for a coffee anywhere there.

Recently saw one in Sainsbury’s.

OK so you want other people to accommodate your kid who is has SEN and scared of dogs, yet you have dogs yourself.
Very hypocritical.

mindfulmoaning · 13/03/2026 18:36

I also dislike children who are out of control/ ignored by their parents, grinding cake or biscuit into the seats and making a mess which the parents dont bother with

Pricelessadvice · 13/03/2026 18:36

I agree OP, and I’m a dog owner and dog lover who far prefers dogs to people!
I think outside spaces are ok for dogs in cafes (like a patio area out front, for instance) but I still feel it’s weird to see dogs allowed in indoor cafes.
People bring them into Costa and I’m always looking around to see if it bothers people because it just seems so odd and a bit unhygienic.
Ten years ago you wouldn’t have got that happening, it was guide dogs only.

@YeOldeGreyhound

yeah humans might fart on the seat but their arse is encased in underwear and trousers, so barriers to protect the seat. A dogs arse is totally bare. So it’s obvious which is the most gross and which spreads the most bacteria.

My dog never sat on seats. She sat on a mat on the floor.

The hospitality industry is struggling. Allowing dogs means more custom and more money.

My local cafe is in the middle of a park and really encourages dogs. On certain days, you get 10% off of your order if you have a dog with you. They have a loyal customer base which includes dogs.
