Total embarrassment now.
Is anyone ever going to get a grip on this?

Has anyone become nervous or their children about going to school?

There was one the other day too. Boy was injured.

Teenage girl stabbed at school, police say

Officers were called to Thorpe St Andrew School, near Norwich, on Wednesday morning following reports a girl had been stabbed.

How many years? I was working in a school that was locked down while police apprehended a pupil with a knife in about 1995.

There were 243 fatal stabbings in England and Wales in 1995, there were 205 in the 12 months to March 2025 but I know people do not like facts to get in the way of a feeling/misconception!

I think it is horrifying. Whatever he stabbed her with, he obviously wasn’t trained like a surgeon to ensure the wound could not cause serious harm. And the intention of pushing a blade into someone’s body is horrific, even in the hormone-addled mind of a teenager.

Ok, I'll rephrase it.

It's a horrible thing to have happened to that poor girl. I'm sure her family are horrified, as is the school.

But it isn't a wider issue for society to be "horrified" about because knife crime is actually lower than it was when we were at school. It's a situation that's improving, not worsening. Our perception that it's all so much worse nowadays is not based on what's actually happening.

Violence against women and girls from men and boys is an issue society has not done nearly enough to resolve. We have far to go on that. But posts like the OP are just stirring up a MAGA-lite narrative that the country is embarrassing, it's gone to the dogs, we're a disgrace. A populist playbook.

’Nothing to see here, I’ve not been affected’? There seems to be a lot of this dismissive attitude on Mumsnet at the moment, I wonder where it’s coming from?

There always seems to be some news of violence coming out of cities. I was a bit shocked on hearing this as I don’t know of the area and it’s not where you’d expect. Our cities are getting worse, and violence seems to be becoming more widespread even into previously ‘nice’ areas, or perhaps especially into ‘nice’ areas. Even official statistics recognise that knife crime is rising and violence against women and girls is growing out of control. You could argue that the cities are only small areas of the country and the vast majority of land lies outside them I suppose, but most people also know that more people live in the cities and associated areas. Of course they do tend to be poorer.

Our cities aren’t getting worse. Violent crime is decreasing.

cardibach · 12/03/2026 11:26

What about when I’m at work and I ask a colleague how her weekend was, is that dishonest because I’m stealing company time?

Not if you can work at the same time! I used to work beside a nurse who used to say ‘less jaw, more paw!’ 😂😂😂

What @KiposWonderbeasts ?
Obviously it's not acceptable to use violence and lad should be prosecuted, but "treated for minor injuries" doesn't fall into "horrifying."
We don't know what was used , whether it was knife crime or a pair of compasses from a maths set. Let's not jump to extremes.

so if your child came home injured from being stabbed with a compass you’d say “meh… least it’s not a knife”. Or if same happened to you at work or public, you’d brush it off as. “thems the breaks! Nothing to see here!”

The thing is what was she stabed with? The article doesn't say. Kids will and can get hold of a lot of things that could be used to stab someone with. It could be anything from a sharpened pencil to a screwdriver.

I was stabbed in the back of the thigh, with a compass, in 1982. I had to have the point removed in casualty. He got a detention, it was classed as horseplay gone wrong...

84figi · 12/03/2026 12:02

One of the reasons I never wanted my children to go to the state comprehensive. Behaviour in this country in school is atrocious. Even in grammars TBF, but at least grammars expel for serious violence (not just a punch up after a squabble).

Weapon brought in, no knife warning nonnese, straight expel. I remember the grammar my child was at expelling kids for bringing in fireworks as prank for the last day of year 11 expulsion for doing fire alarm on purpose and expulsion for oiling up a corridor.

I refer you to my post at 09:22 this morning where I clarified that 'horrific' for an individual is not 'horrific' for society necessarily. Violent crime and knife attacks are less frequent, not more frequent.

Our cities aren’t getting worse. Violent crime is decreasing.

Having lived in a city I simply do not believe that.

This country lies to keep us all in a somnolent state of subservience.

Ffs Hmm I’m NOT saying “nothing to see here I’ve not been affected”. Your reading comprehension skills need some work.

What I am saying, is that posts proclaiming that all
of the country and society is descending into lawless feral breakdown are nonsense. MOST of the country is fine. We are doing better than many, many other countries. The stats show levels of violent crime are coming down. Yes this is an awful incident. I am completely against any violence against women and girls. But it doesn’t mean the whole of the UK should be embarrassed.

Every generation as it ages out claims the one or two gens below it are awful, will destroy the world, blah blah blah. There’s an Aristotle quote somewhere saying exactly that. This sounds like Boomer bring back the birch nonsense to me. There were always crimes, we just didn’t have rolling news that had to fill 24/7 time before.

agree, but it’s also “yeah but it’s just your child who’s been attacked… why are you so stressed?! Lots of children won’t have been attacked today!!”

often wonder if these posters have the ‘spirited/high energy’ perpetrators…

What tosh.

WaryCrow · 12/03/2026 12:32

Embarrassing? Not the word I’d use.

It’s horrifying and the lack of respect, values and control it shows by the perpetrator and probably their parents is utterly shameful.

ERthree · 11/03/2026 12:53

Not shocked at all. We have a generation who have been raised to do as they please. There is punishment at home nor at school. We have made our children entitled. They truly believe nobody has the right to chastise them.

I think, in fairness to the op, this was what she meant by embarrassing.

Also obviously horrific.

I think less are happening but we have more instant news so a wider audience hears about it. Whereas in the 90s it would only have been local news, today everyone in the country sees it.

I'd only be really concerned if they had obtained a knife or scaple (yes we use scaples in school for science) from school itself.

I wouldn't be embarrassed.

The word is scalpel!

Of course each instance of violent crime is terrible to the victim and those around them but the number of such crimes is decreasing.

I think that's true. The incident I referred to above which happened in 1966/7 didn't make National news, I dont think it was even in the local paper. I heard about it from people at that school.

That makes no sense. I didn’t say there was no violent crime. I said it had decreased. Which it has. So it’s horrible for the people it happens to but there’s still less chance of it happening to any given person - which is good overall, don’t you think?

Don't be silly. Official bodies aren't lying to you about crime. And at 61 I definitely believe crime has dropped over my lifetime anyway.

That’s such a cop out. ‘The figures aren't coming down, every second person is getting stabbed they just don’t report it’. Utter nonsense.

Ninerainbows · 11/03/2026 15:11

Yep. As soon as you see "girl stabbed by boy" it's like ah, there we go. It's Adolescence. How dare girls hurt boys' feelings.

I agree. I know where this is. It's a fairly nice area. Until this last week I think the school had a good reputation. It looks like the boy stabbed her at 10.30, so school break time, jumped the fence and was caught 20 minutes later outside the school. I suspect its another kid at the school, and I bet she rejected him so he came back with a knife. Thank God it didn't look like it was something that caused her serious injury. I'm not sure why it's national news when it happens in London all the time.
