To watch Silent Witness despite it being the worst TV show ever?

I’ve always watched it. It’s a Winter to Spring habit. Nikki is wooden and has never become a real character and the introduction of Jack… 😳
But this season is beyond- Jack’s pirates of the Caribbean makeover, Nikki staring thoughtfully into the distance and spouting some poetic existential lines. It’s the worst. And I can’t stop watching.

I wish Harry and Leo were still in it, I've given up watching it now, managed most of episode one of this new series but frankly, Nikki and Jack's relationship was making me feel queasy.

How many companies or organisations would allow close working together like they do and not have to provide sick buckets for the rest of the staff when the two of them start kissing.

I might have to go back to the Amanda Burton series and watch those again.

It’s surreal but DH and I love it!
We love how Jack just does all the jobs (and this is never questioned)… the policing, chasing and interviewing the witnesses, forensics, projectile calculations (occasionally with whizzy graphics!)... Nicky has obviously ‘dropped on’ as can’t see any other roles forthcoming. The lab techs are the best actors / best bit of the show… other than its theme tune’which is a joy to warble along to..

Yes! Why on earth don’t the police tell these people to stay in their lane? Realistically they would do the autopsy and the forensic work, write a couple of reports then hand it over to the police.

Who is funding them? Having all these highly paid people concentrate solely on one case for days at a time would cost loads.

Hazelnuticecream · 11/03/2026 08:13

At the end of every episode Im usually saying "But WHY" or "BUT HOW" or occasionally "but WHO??" because the plots are so awful.
I watching an episode of Astrid which opens on a plane yesterday and trying to remember another TV show which had a plane episode where the plane couldn't land for about five hours for no real reason apart from plot, and remembered yes it was Silent Witness. And remember the whole series about how DNA evidence was no longer valid because of weird science, that didn't go anywhere.

Dragonflytamer · 11/03/2026 08:13

I love Silent Witness! But I'm under no illusion that it is a documentary. This series was ridiculous going from Jack being attacked in prison to Nikki being attacked in the next. It's the way that pretty much anyone seems to be able to walk around their lab that is supposed to be forensics.

Myblueclematis · 11/03/2026 08:14

There has been some real life forensic programmes on over the last few years, I think there's a new one running now.

I bet they fall about laughing or gagging if they even bother to watch the Nikki and Jack show.

Hazelnuticecream · 11/03/2026 08:17

I also love that occasionally the script remembers there must surely be other people working there, not just (currently) four people, and someone will walk past in the background or be asked to do something and then never be seen again.

DurhamDurham · 11/03/2026 08:19

@mynamechangemyrules I admire your persistence. I watched Silent Witness for years but gave up a couple of series ago. I couldn’t get past the complete lack of chemistry and stilted dialogue between the whole cast. Feel like I may be missing out now and might have another look, just for old times sake.

outnumbered77 · 11/03/2026 08:20

Same. Referred to as silent shitness here but I can’t stop watching. DH despairs of me.

CautiousLurker2 · 11/03/2026 08:42

Love this thread. Every year DH and I decide we won’t watch it again, but we’ve watched every episode since the pilot and it’s a hard habit to give up.

I adore the humour and intelligence of Francesca Mills’ Kit, and Maggie Steed is a great and quirky addition, but it is long past the time when Nikki and Butt-head - oops sorry, Jack - left the show. The plots are risible. Even Midsomer Murders and Father Brown make more sense.

But I do love watching for Emilia’s outfits…

IdentityCris · 11/03/2026 09:17

It's a love to hate thing, really. Every time they get into mortal danger you know they will be free with one bound, and I love the way the cops are apparently happy to pay them to waste hours doing work that goes way beyond the remit of forensic scientists.. But if the voiceover philosophising is going to become a regular thing, we may have to give it up.

I thought I’d give it one last try and it did seem ok but then went down hill
the dramatic speeches were ridiculous
random lines when Nicky asked if she gave off lesbian vibes
and the shower scene with jack and Nicky

Edited

The shower scene - we were “eugh!” First she declines when he says “you coming in?” Then they start their forensics conversation which makes him irresistible and she jumps in! Nooo… unsexiest thing ever.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 11/03/2026 09:46

It goes by Witless Silence in my house, which I think we may have pinched from French and Saunders.

and Jack is always referred to as Karl Kennedy, as he seemingly was involved with every single aspect of medicine as Jack is with police work.

LBFseBrom · 11/03/2026 09:48

I hven't seen it for a while but always loved it.
Your choice whether or not to watch, surely.

nevernotmaybe · 11/03/2026 11:58

People watch all sorts and it get popular even, look at Traitors nonsense, and masked singer or whatever it is called, and all that kind of crap.

The only purpose of it is to entertain, it either does or doesn't. If it does for you, it objectively fulfils its role for you.

NeedSomeHeadspace · 11/03/2026 20:32

It’s farcical these days. I feel no chemistry between Jack and Nikki, and that shower scene and knowing they intertwine themselves in chavvy gold sheets is even more unrealistic! Nikki used to look quite edgy in earlier series and I always wanted her blouses (!) but all of a sudden she’s lost her style and been downgraded, complete with annoying tightly woven plaits. They’ll have her in dungarees next! Their roles seem to cross many boundaries now which I find confusing. And the introduction of Kit … sigh … terrible actress who acts like a giddy 5 year old wanting to be high-fived rather than a professional person. Get rid and bring back Clarissa!

The problem is it used to be a fairly high quality drama and it has slipped in to farce. It a bit like booking to see the 3 tenors but getting the Masked Singer.

We call it Slightly Witless or Rightly Shitness.

ThinkingAbout2026 · 11/03/2026 01:47

I haven't watched it properly in years (not since they killed off Thomas), I loved the Nikki/Harry era, I wish they got together, Jack is nice but not a patch on Harry.

Edited

I miss Harry! The actor seems to have vanished

Violent witless in our house

GenerousGardener · 11/03/2026 21:17

I like the actress who plays Kit, buts she’s Earthy Mangold in Worzel Gummidge and I can’t get past that!

Nofeckingway · 11/03/2026 21:22

@NeedSomeHeadspace Dungarees! 😂
With sensible shoes and twee cardigans .

Gingerwarthog · 11/03/2026 21:24

I like Nikki’s outfits! I watch it to get inspiration for tops to go with jeans. Does that make me shallow? (Also like Kit and Maggie Steed)

Bonkers1966 · 11/03/2026 21:27

Yeah. Latest series is just plain weird. I can't stop watching this fecking show and I dread them writing Jack out. Sigh.

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 11/03/2026 21:30

We watch it out of habit too, but it really is dire. They don’t gel as a couple in the slightest, let alone whether they’d be allowed to work together.

Zapx · 11/03/2026 21:30

I spent this last season commenting with various levels of outrage on Jack’s facial hair decisions 🙂 Oh and I didn’t understand the last two episodes. DH explained them to me…, and I still don’t understand them.
