Does Turkish Delight exist anymore?!

Arlanymor · 10/03/2026 16:10

I mean the proper stuff in powdered sugar, not Fry’s in chocolate.

I’ve just moved house and bought my mum her Mother’s Day gifts in advance, so she’s had her card, a book and jewellery this past Wednesday when they came to see the new place (don’t ask, my dad is nosy, couldn’t wait any longer apparently! I finished moving on Monday…) I’ve just got a text inviting me for Sunday lunch at a hotel that is equidistant between their home and mine.

For this Sunday! I was kind of hoping to just watch the rugby on Saturday and carry on unpacking my house on Sunday. I can’t turn up empty handed I would feel awful - plus it’s in a hotel, so I there will be mums being treated all over the place (nothing wrong with that). And I will look like a dog’s dinner as I have no idea what box my ‘nicer’ clothes are in.

So I can get some flowers on the way, but what she really loves is Turkish Delight - the proper stuff. Does this exist anymore? And, if so, where? Thank you! I have limited googling ability to order stuff online as the BT engineer came today to sort out the internet and there’s a junction box issue, so currently at local pub using their WiFi (not going to cry about that though… rude not to have a glass of wine…) But I could order online in the next hour..!

The Islamic food shop near me sells it. They do a nice rose one, which is unusual. Also pistachio.

Rose is the classic flavour surely?

This thread is making my mouth water 😋

Had some for Christmas think it was Aldi

Dappy777 · 10/03/2026 17:04

If you want the best stuff, you need to check the back of your wardrobe. Don’t you remember The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe? The white witch had loads of Turkish Delight.😁

Secretseverywhere · 10/03/2026 17:04

Aldi’s do a nice rose and lemon one. It’s a middle aisle thing though so seems to pop up randomly, it’s really nice though and a box is only £3 so worth a look if you are passing.

No, don't listen to these posters! Turkish Delight was banned in Europe in 1988, I can't remember why.

Rumour has it there are some underground supply chains so it's possible to get some on the dark web, but the penalties are high.

Ultimately, while you're enjoying your middle class dinner parties in Chelsea, people are dying in the favelas of Instanbul...

Oh, SORRY! I thought you meant Opium! I didn't RTFT

For future reference - my friend who is a Turkish national and award winning Turkish cookery writer (I am very proud of her! ) recommends this: https://ozerlat.co.uk/product-category/turkish-delight/. Female run business , and even I - who don’t really like lokum think it is absolutely delicious!

Yes, I saw it on pop up stalls in Westfield White City the other day. Lots of it. Looked really lovely and fresh.

@Arlanymor Suddenly I want a Joes. Swansea doesn't have a cheese shop but there is one in Abergavenny, Madame Fromage.

I was in Mumbles in the rain the other week and I went to their parlour for one - Welsh Cake flavour! I have heard great things about Madame Fromage, next time I pop eastwards I will definitely do a detour… and probably will need to take out a mortgage advantage because I love cheese more than most things!

Ah when I lived in Bethnal Green this would have been perfect! Fresh is really lovey isn’t it?

I mean I love eighteenth century literature, so opium would go nicely with that. Could try to grow poppies on my window sill?!

Lidl have it at the moment. Eid Al Fitr (the festival at the end of Ramadan) is 19/ 20 March so supermarkets are stocking up on dates, sweets, and baklava. You might see it labelled as loukoumi (or a similar spelling) too.

There are two wardrobes in the new place and NEITHER have Narnia at the back - I even checked the boiler cupboard - have I been missold?!

Oh I wish we had a cheese shop - I would have moved in there rather than my new place! I know a delicatessen in Cardiff that probably would do it, but no time to get there and back before Sunday with work commitments etc. Thank you though, as it’s a good call for the next time I’m there.

We got some last week from the Mediterranean stall on Cardiff Market (across from the Welsh cake stall). Can also recommend the honey & chilli cashews! Definitely worth a visit if you go into Cardiff.

FruAashild · 10/03/2026 16:52

Very impressed you still have some left. My brother brought a big wooden box for Christmas and it was gone before 12th night (just call me Edmund). In my defence we have a lot of visitor over Christmas.

@FruAashild, your comment of “just call me Edmund” has cheered up my day immensely. Now feeling I should both order blackberry Turkish Delight from Fortnum’s, AND eat it whilst re-reading the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe x

Ooh I’ve not been to the market in an age, well since 2023 when I finished my masters. I could spend all day in Cardiff Market! Good call and I’m also nuts for nuts!

Caveat emptor. Check your deeds, but my worry is that you have no recourse once everything is completed.

Sorry OP 💐

Dagnamit! I am taken to softly calling: “Mr Tumnus, Mr Tumnus?” through my hallway. But nothing. I suspect you are correct. Sigh… wait, is that hooves I hear a-trotting?!

Is that legal?! I mean given the vendor!

Sorry to be sensible for a moment, but my favourite Viz strip of recent years was a skit on TL,TW & TW where the Pevensie boys discover the wardrobe but get totally engrossed in Prof Digory Kirke's stash of jazz mags while all hell breaks loose behind them in Narnia. A modern classic.

Oh never saw that, but this is fairly funny!

Sorry it won’t let me post the link - look for ‘SNL James McAvoy Mr Tumnus’!

That was a whole lot of backstory just to ask where you can buy some Turkish delight 😂

However I'm now craving (non chocolate) Turkish delight so am glad for all the suggestions!
