Does Turkish Delight exist anymore?!

Arlanymor · 10/03/2026 16:10

I mean the proper stuff in powdered sugar, not Fry’s in chocolate.

I’ve just moved house and bought my mum her Mother’s Day gifts in advance, so she’s had her card, a book and jewellery this past Wednesday when they came to see the new place (don’t ask, my dad is nosy, couldn’t wait any longer apparently! I finished moving on Monday…) I’ve just got a text inviting me for Sunday lunch at a hotel that is equidistant between their home and mine.

For this Sunday! I was kind of hoping to just watch the rugby on Saturday and carry on unpacking my house on Sunday. I can’t turn up empty handed I would feel awful - plus it’s in a hotel, so I there will be mums being treated all over the place (nothing wrong with that). And I will look like a dog’s dinner as I have no idea what box my ‘nicer’ clothes are in.

So I can get some flowers on the way, but what she really loves is Turkish Delight - the proper stuff. Does this exist anymore? And, if so, where? Thank you! I have limited googling ability to order stuff online as the BT engineer came today to sort out the internet and there’s a junction box issue, so currently at local pub using their WiFi (not going to cry about that though… rude not to have a glass of wine…) But I could order online in the next hour..!

We had some from Waitrose at Christmas and it was awful so you might want to give it a miss. Very hard and chewy and poor flavour

crazeekat · 10/03/2026 16:31

U can get it out home barbains and B&M

I love the Waitrose Turkish Delight it’s my favourite.

Find your local Turkish or middle eastern supermarket they’ll have loads of the good stuff.

Thanks for the advice, I’m nowhere near a Waitrose, so definitely not on my list.

Have you had it recently? We used to buy it every year but this Christmas it was totally different. As well as being hard and chewy the pieces were all very small. They must have changed supplier I think.

SoScarletItWas · 10/03/2026 16:37

M&S usually has it. Waitrose too but more seasonal.

painauchoc512 · 10/03/2026 16:38

The foodhall in Dobbies garden centre had some at the weekend.

Yes, this.

And on an unhelpful tangent, we were in northern Greece a few years ago and bought some Greek Delight in Thessaloniki that was made on the premises. Probably people of the Greek diaspora who were forcibly relocated from Turkey (or the Ottoman Empire as it then was) in the early 20th century and brought the sticky stuff with them. It was also delicious.

WorriedRelative · 10/03/2026 16:40

Yes! My DH bought me pistachio Turkish delight for my birthday and it was gorgeous. It was bon bons brand I think, octagonal box.

He probably didn't get it anywhere fancy, if not a supermarket then a garden centre probably.

Morrisons definitely do traditional Turkish delight with the powder coating in a box.

Myoldbear · 10/03/2026 16:42

Hotel Chocolat sells traditional rose and lemon cubes in powdery sugar.

I definitely second others recommending Marveli; I got a gift box from there for my son for Christmas.

They have traditional flavours with rose petals and pistachios as well as unexpected choices with a modern twist.

It was great fun selecting several flavours for the customised box!

Yep I buy both varieties every year( the nut one and the rose/lemon), hasn’t changed at all. I much prefer it like that, it’s how it’s supposed to be and more natural less artificial syrupy/gooey.

@Arlanymor not sure where in Wales you are, but the cheese shop in Penarth is amazing! Love a Penarth day out with a trip to the cheese shop for lunch or snacks (also Home restaurant, the Danish bakery , the covered market place for fruit & veg and many other yummy things). Proper foodie day out - and the seaside!

Fortnums if you want to splash out. They have some lovely flavours and mixtures too.

Going to have to have a piece from my Christmas box this evening after reading this! They do blackberry which is surprisingly good, as well as the more classic rose, pistachio etc.

Small tins about 12.95 ( but lovely, resuable tin). Wooden boxes larger and a bit more.

Edited

Very impressed you still have some left. My brother brought a big wooden box for Christmas and it was gone before 12th night (just call me Edmund). In my defence we have a lot of visitor over Christmas.

Bananalanacake · 10/03/2026 16:53

When Woolworths was still around they did Lings Turkish Delight in a red octagonal box, I have not been able to find it anywhere since.
Would the Waitrose in Stratford Westfield have it?

TroysMammy · 10/03/2026 16:54

@Arlanymor as you mentioned Fforestfach try Exotica on St Helens Road. You can always send Imran a Facebook question. There are also other world food shops there International sells fresh naan bread and they sell baklava so they could sell Turkish Delight. I'd be surprised if they don't.

Ooh that sounds like a day trip worth having! Thank you. Penarth is lovely. I’m in Swansea, so a bit far to go between now and then with everything else going on… but sounds like a spring Saturday trip to plan!

Hotel Chocolat do surprisingly good Turkish Delight. I love it!

deeahgwitch · 10/03/2026 16:55

I too thought of Hadji Bey. Google it.
Personally though I hate Turkish Delight.

NoAprilFool · 10/03/2026 16:56

Oh brill, thanks so much. When people mentioned world food shops I was thinking that St Helens is the most likely place - will drop him a line, thank you! Very easy for me to get to as well. (And I could get myself a Joe’s ice cream for the walk back…).

@Arlanymor Suddenly I want a Joes. Swansea doesn't have a cheese shop but there is one in Abergavenny, Madame Fromage.

Cheerfulcharlie · 10/03/2026 17:00

The Hotel Chocolat turkish delight is divine (there's no chocolate on it!)
