To think that everyone has to do their bit and reduce fuel consumption

Noras · 09/03/2026 17:04

Due to the situation in the Gulf it seems clear to me that there is an issue with fuel.

To me it seems obvious that we all have to try to slightly reduce our fuel consumption even by just a bit eg not having the heating on or turning the temperature down by a degree or so, or reducing the time that the temperature is on. Also, maybe thinking more before making a journey in the car or just driving slower to reduce fuel consumption.

Even if we all reduced our fuel consumption by 10% more that would make a huge difference I think.

So am I unreasonable to think like that?

I understand that bit. I don't understand how the price of fuel determines the speed, we can choose how fast to go regardless of how much it costs

Well, it doesn't, and the idea that we all drive slower as the price of fuel goes up is laughable. If there is any change then people might drive less, but they sure don't drive slower.

I think this the wrong question.

I think we should be asking "AIBU to think that everyone in the UK should be campaigning for sufficient green energy to heat our homes and provide us with sufficient transport?"

Other countries don't think twice about heat/air con and transport. Because it is cheap and secure.

We need energy security, not endless workarounds because our energy is expensive and insecure.

‘Green energy’ so all the flats in my area were fitted with geothermal heating at a vast cost. They said it would be amazing. Guess what two years and two replacements to every flat they’ve been ripped out and now have combi boilers. I wonder how much that debacle cost the tax payers.

If anything I'm using more, really don't care about global warming..

I don't see this post as a personal attack on people who are unable to walk, or have time constraints for work etc - I assumed the OP didn't mean them. I took it as a reminder to use a little less if you CAN and it's a good point too make.

Polythene · 09/03/2026 23:57

Some nights I go outside, sit in my car, turn it on, turn the heater on and stay there for five hours just to piss you off OP.

DiscoBeat · 10/03/2026 00:01

I'd like to see more lights switched off at night in shops and showrooms. All the car showrooms in the town near me are lit up like Christmas trees, with TV adverts running inside all night long. I don't think we need to see Lamborghinis or watch a video about Volvos at 3am. Just enough lights for security should be enough.

Thank you thank you thank you. From the comments i was beginning to think I was alone.

SouthernNights59 · 10/03/2026 00:22

I don't drive, my heating is electric, I travel by bus twice a year (to another town) and never fly anywhere, I don't have my shopping delivered I carry it home myself. What more can I do?

CrazyGoatLady · 10/03/2026 00:35

Oh do bore off.

Like the school run parents who get their cars out even though they are within walking distance?

Has it ever occurred to you that the vast majority of school run parents will be doing school run then heading to work?

Or if its a day they don't work, going shopping or whatever, few will be going home to lounge on the couch

Needspaceforlego · 10/03/2026 00:50

Op don't forget this, a few years ago Glasgow held the G9 summit.
The flights to and from Glasgow created more CO2 Gases than Scotland creates in a year.

What we do as individuals is mean less until the serious poluters get on board and countries like China actually start to care about what they put into the atmosphere

Her 10% reduction will keep an industrial plant running for a couple of extra minutes if that!

I don’t know why this has descended into a conversation about school pick ups, it’s clearly unconnected. Otherwise it would be fine for me to carry on doing everything you’re criticising in my electric car, but the laziness/ bad parking/ traffic issues are still the same

I meant if all residents reduced by 10% - but I've no idea if that would be enough for two extra days still!

LoveWine123 · 10/03/2026 06:45

That’s like asking us to use paper straws while huge companies are allowed to wrap every cucumber we eat in plastic. These days you can’t make a salad without removing 15 plastic wrappers from our vegetables, But yeah consumers will save the planet by recycling. Who is holding the supermarkets responsible? Same with OP’s suggestions…let’s freeze to death while the big guys are bombing each other.

Exactly you couldn't make it up.

I said G9, it wasn't it was COP26 held in 2021, when there was still tons of covid restrictions too.
But regardless of what its called these things generate tons of pollution

Needspaceforlego · 10/03/2026 07:32

Another one that cracks me up is Aircon. How often do you go some where that the aircon is so low that its uncomfortably cold. You find yourself rushing to get out the place.

OneTealTurtle · 10/03/2026 07:32

YABU. I won’t be changing anything. My house is always 22 regardless of the weather outside because that’s what I’m comfortable with.

My car is always full because I keep it topped up whenever I go out, and I won’t be changing my travelling plans either.

charlieandjenna · 10/03/2026 07:38

I’d thought that most people had already been doing this considering how expensive everything has been for a good few years now. I’m not sure how much there is left to cut back on.

That isn't what "green energy" means. Yes there will be experimental community energy projects. No they won't all work.

Currently our grid works between 20-70% with green energy. We need to increase that.

Yeah, it’s a total racket. Why bother with harnessing energy from the sun and wind when we can just dig stuff up and set fire to it?

What part of this do you dispute?

Here's the National Grid output today: nearly 50% of our energy RIGHT NOW is green energy: https://grid.iamkate.com/

Any suggestion on how to get rid of broken wind turbines other then digging a hole and burying them. You’ve also never found an Eagle with its wing cut off.
