To think that everyone has to do their bit and reduce fuel consumption

Due to the situation in the Gulf it seems clear to me that there is an issue with fuel.

To me it seems obvious that we all have to try to slightly reduce our fuel consumption even by just a bit eg not having the heating on or turning the temperature down by a degree or so, or reducing the time that the temperature is on. Also, maybe thinking more before making a journey in the car or just driving slower to reduce fuel consumption.

Even if we all reduced our fuel consumption by 10% more that would make a huge difference I think.

So am I unreasonable to think like that?

No, I don’t think that everyone should do their bit. I’m certainly not going to ask my elderly disabled dad to turn his heating off. He needs to keep warm to help manage some of his conditions.

If others choose to make sacrifices, go for it but some people are not able to.

I think this the wrong question.

I think we should be asking "AIBU to think that everyone in the UK should be campaigning for sufficient green energy to heat our homes and provide us with sufficient transport?"

Other countries don't think twice about heat/air con and transport. Because it is cheap and secure.

We need energy security, not endless workarounds because our energy is expensive and insecure.

Perhaps it would make any difference but we are facing a colossal energy crisis and I was brought up to think that every bit helps.

i don’t mind too much turning off the heating earlier and keeping it low. I air dry my hair. I do run the tumble drier a bit but we have a heat pump one. I found heat drying clothes inside made the house colder.

i agree they people with kids and schools work have an issue. However i do see people who literally drive to the corner shop all the time or even to schools 10 minutes walk away.

We could ensue that workplaces turn off more lights when not used.

I think whilst it seems like a good idea, in reality your 10% reduction is just going to keep an industrial plant running for a couple of extra day, not help people with needs etc. If the crunch gets really bad you'd be better focusing your efforts now and how to make life somewhat comfortable if fuel is heavily rationed.

MarkMenziesFakeMugger · 09/03/2026 20:57

Tricky one. Most people don’t drive around for the sake of it - we are going to work, take kids to their activities, meeting friends, help with caring responsibilities…some of us are disabled and need the car.

And public transport is HOPELESS!
Plus drivers where I live treat cyclists like dirt and often make the roads really unsafe …

I think many of us could drive a little slower, park the car slightly closer to our house and further from the destination, but is that tiny ongoing effort- by the relatively few- going to make much difference?

There must be something more impactful than this?

Oh fuck off.

Indeed. I'm not going down this road again. Already been there with the COVID wankas.

Her 10% reduction will keep an industrial plant running for a couple of extra minutes if that!

I don’t know why this has descended into a conversation about school pick ups, it’s clearly unconnected. Otherwise it would be fine for me to carry on doing everything you’re criticising in my electric car, but the laziness/ bad parking/ traffic issues are still the same

SmallTreeDeepRoots · 09/03/2026 21:06

The only thing that has an effect on energy use is the price. In that respect this war is a positive. But it will undoubtedly have a disproportionate impact on the poorer members of society. The billionaires will barely notice.

We need to prepare for a future with next to no fossil fuels. And the sooner we do that, the less impact geopolitical manoeuvres will have on our day to day lives.

Portakalkedi · 09/03/2026 21:09

Some of us already consider these things, because we have common sense, accountability and also don't like to throw away money. YOu need to be aiming at the many idle folks who drive when they could walk, who sit at home all winter in shorts with the heating up full blast, fly abroad on cheap hols, etc etc.

Forthesteps · 09/03/2026 21:09

ThereWillBeSun · 09/03/2026 17:11

I have… that’s why we have two electric cars, a solar array and battery storage.

Yeah, people who can't afford tens of thousands on EVs or a house with its own drive just don't care about the environment 🙄

Yep And they should have thought of that before insisting ppl should live in flats

Dobequiet · 09/03/2026 21:15

I drive a lot for work and if I don’t then my patients don’t get seen.

We don’t have heating though so it’s okay… Hmm

TeenLifeMum · 09/03/2026 21:16

Yeah, I’ll save fuel by working from home an extra day - I’m sure it’ll make a massive difference when billionaires are sailing their yachts and flying their private jets all over

ThiagoJones · 09/03/2026 21:25

I already don’t waste fuel. We have 2 electric cars. We only put our heating on when we’re cold.
I drive my kids to school because it’s 14 miles away. That would be a long walk.

darkchocolatebounty · 09/03/2026 17:24

Quite

Vigorouslysnuggled · 09/03/2026 21:36

Nothing we can do to make a difference unfortunately

BeAvidHiker · 09/03/2026 21:42

Sorry, but what are you talking about. No we don’t need to reduce our fuel consumption. That’s not how it works.

The UK is a footnote in its consumption. A rounding error. You taking fewer car journeys makes not a blind bit of difference to global energy landscape.

Why is the default setting in this country to think small. Yeah, let’s all switch the lights and go live in the jungle.

BeAvidHiker · 09/03/2026 21:46

DBSFstupid · 09/03/2026 20:57

These people look for any excuse for performative martyrdom. They love being locked in their own homes, being told to not put the lights on, to find some pots and pans and hang them in the street. Cringe.

Noras · 09/03/2026 17:32

i have turned down my heating, run it minimally and during the evenings throw a blanket on my legs to keep warm. I also have a wood burner reserved for when it’s really really cold. We rarely if never use the oven and have an air drier although most meals are made on the hobb. We have a hybrid car so rarely use petrol. I’m investigating solar panels but I have an issue with the orientation of my house. I was also waiting for the more advanced panels to arrive with perovskyvite or whatever it’s called as designed by Oxford, I also plan to get cavity wall insulation as our houses have cavities despite being built in the 1990s with inner thermalite blocks. So far I have changed all the windows to more thermally efficient and also the back door. I have also put in insulation to the flooring which helps a little.

i think on a larger scale I am trying to cut down my overall consumption and think are these things needed.

However with what’s going on I do feel annoyed that we are still beholden to the Middle East. I ageee that we should I have more nuclear like France. We also need to expedite renewables eg put solar panels on every tall building or car parking area. I would also open up more North Sea Oil field licences as a temporary measure to pay for all the green infrastructure and to help expedite if further. N fact I would increase the licences now to try to pump more oil out and use the money to pay for the green energy development.

Im surprised that Government buildings and local authorities do not all have solar panels etc.

As a government, they could perhaps remind people to only make necessary trips or less frequent social trips etc.

Why?

JaneJeffer · 09/03/2026 21:49

Oh great idea. Freezing my arse off will really offset this.

To think that everyone has to do their bit and reduce fuel consumption
OriginalUsername2 · 09/03/2026 21:51

Talk to the people building more and more data centres and the CEOs of massive companies choosing to incorporate AI into workflows. Ordinary people can’t make much of a difference.

MigGirl · 09/03/2026 22:01

CraftyNavySeal · 09/03/2026 17:20

Yes, let’s accelerate nuclear power so we don’t need fossil fuels anymore.

Also the market does that already, people use less oil when it costs more.

Actually the UK no longer uses coal for electricity generation, we still use gass but most of that comes from Scotland.

Newer ways of producing nuclear energy are also being developed. The current nuclear style reactors where first invented mainly for producing nuclear materials for bombs. There are much safer ways to produce nuclear energy but they don't produce materials for nuclear bombs which was the main reason why they where not developed in the first place. The first nuclear reactors didn't even produce electricity they where only built to make materials for hydrogen bombs.

OhWise1 · 09/03/2026 22:04

Fuck that!

Psychosislotus · 09/03/2026 22:09

tutugogo · 09/03/2026 17:17

Some of us wouldn’t dream of wasting fuel in the first place, it’s right to minimise it where you can out if choice but not guilt people into reducing below what they need, most consumption is not by a person keeping their heating on at 19 rather than 18 (mine is set at 18) and many of us would love to leave our cars at home but the council cancelled the bus in March 2020, it’s a 2.5 hour walk to work or a very unsafe bike ride over twisting hills with 3 fatal accidents in 5 years.

Agree. My gas bill is a whooper! Don’t people think I have tried every way to get it down. I don’t think there’s many people using extra for the fun of it.

Oh absolutely and with it they manage to destroy our lives. Sick of it and I won't play the game anymore.

swingingbytheseat · 09/03/2026 22:15

I’ve had my heating on 3 times this winter as I literally can’t afford it. At times out flat has dropped to 13 and we’ve been ok under electric blankets.
interesting fact - the Christmas tree appreciates it and hasn’t died as result 🤣
