To think that everyone has to do their bit and reduce fuel consumption

Due to the situation in the Gulf it seems clear to me that there is an issue with fuel.

To me it seems obvious that we all have to try to slightly reduce our fuel consumption even by just a bit eg not having the heating on or turning the temperature down by a degree or so, or reducing the time that the temperature is on. Also, maybe thinking more before making a journey in the car or just driving slower to reduce fuel consumption.

Even if we all reduced our fuel consumption by 10% more that would make a huge difference I think.

So am I unreasonable to think like that?

We try to walk if possible. If I have all three children then often walking is not an option, but if it’s just one of us going out then we walk if possible. I will admit when I was younger I was very much a drive everywhere person, but I did start to get a bit fat so stopped. Really it’s for vanity but the environment is a plus.

Noras · 09/03/2026 19:22

Perhaps it would make any difference but we are facing a colossal energy crisis and I was brought up to think that every bit helps.

i don’t mind too much turning off the heating earlier and keeping it low. I air dry my hair. I do run the tumble drier a bit but we have a heat pump one. I found heat drying clothes inside made the house colder.

i agree they people with kids and schools work have an issue. However i do see people who literally drive to the corner shop all the time or even to schools 10 minutes walk away.

We could ensue that workplaces turn off more lights when not used.

So we should work from home then? Because that would help matters

While there are celebrities taking 10-20 minute plane journeys, you turning your heating down slightly or not using your hairdryer is a total and utter waste of time.

Maybe the government and employers could take this more seriously though. Our village is overrun with cars at drop off time and maybe 50% of parents have to drive their DC here, because the neighbouring village schools have closed and this now is their catchment area school. Employers insisting on people coming into the office unnecessarily. Cuts to bus and train services meaning people have no choice but to drive. In my village there used to be a bus once an hour, now there is a bus to the local town at 9am and a returning one at 5pm.

Same with our local high school. The road past it is so busy at school run time, but the council closed another high school just under 3 miles away and those pupils are expected to travel to this one. Double the pupil numbers - and of course most of those pupils fall in the category of not being far enough away to qualify for school transport, but too far for it to be an easy walk.

notacooldad · 09/03/2026 19:34

Friend of mine who has been waiting for a knee replacenent for seven years on the NHS has no choice but to use his car
Seven years!! Where are you in the uk.
My closest friend has had 2 knee replacements plus two hips done in that last 5 years. She is now fully mobile and pain free.
Your poor friend having to wait that long for one op😡

I can’t turn the heating down any more.

Witchesbe · 09/03/2026 19:48

Ooooooh. New covid chocolate!
But is the drive ESSENTIAL?!
But is 17c ESSENTIAL to have?!

Enyastar · 09/03/2026 19:52

Why should i when the elite take private jets whenever they want.
Thanks for the lecture but nope..

Ihateboris · 09/03/2026 19:57

Well I have no choice as heating oil has doubled so I can't afford it. Just sitting with lots of blankets over me. Bloody miserable existence though.

Many people don't get a choice OP.

We don't all live in a city.

Meadowfinch · 09/03/2026 19:58

I have been. For 14 years, I've cut & dried my own wood, and used it in my log burner to halve my gas bill.

.....Mostly to outraged protests from Mumsnet.

QuiteUnbelievable · 09/03/2026 20:03

Yes we are doing our bit to lower our fuel consumption.

Wolmando · 09/03/2026 20:03

Well, you can

Exactly. Just look at the Superbowl private jet exodus.

I work from home. Don’t fly. Get my shopping delivered. What more would you have me do?

Ah - your shopping is probably delivered in a diesel van! You can’t avoid it!

MakeMineStrong · 09/03/2026 20:13

I have an oil tank. Drive daughter to her school (EHCP) 21 miles away and then back on myself via home to get to work 13 miles in opposite direction. Not much I can do 🤷‍♀️. Not in a position to sell my car for an electric and install a charger.

worry about yourself.

To be fair if petrol prices go up average speed comes down and that can reduce petrol use quite a lot

having coped with COL lately I am surprised people could turn heating down without ill effects - it’s already down

I don't understand that, how does the petrol going up make the average speed go down?

Wolmando · 09/03/2026 20:23

busyd4y · 09/03/2026 20:17

I think it is because if you drive at 55 instead of 70 you can get more mpg so save a bit of money

Wolmando · 09/03/2026 20:25

If everyone drove at 55 though, there would be threads on MN moaning about it as they think people should be driving at the speed limit

Upstartled · 09/03/2026 20:30

What makes you think the UK reduced its oil consumption, that the cost of it would go down? The cost per barrel won't change because the demand from other countries remains extremely high and will simply be rerouted there.

According to Wikipedia, President Nixon set the speed limit at 55 mph during the 1970s oil crisis.

Hes had the NHS phone him while i was round there asking him if he still wants to be on the waiting list. He had a TIA nine years ago and the NHS have tried to tell him since that the knee problem was due to the stroke but he had the knee problem first. He had always done manual work which involves heavy lifting. Hes now retired.

Many could probably cycle though - if your council provided safe cycle routes.

That would also help parents with their own commute, if they are not having to do the school run.

I understand that bit. I don't understand how the price of fuel determines the speed, we can choose how fast to go regardless of how much it costs
