To think that everyone has to do their bit and reduce fuel consumption

Noras · 09/03/2026 17:04

Due to the situation in the Gulf it seems clear to me that there is an issue with fuel.

To me it seems obvious that we all have to try to slightly reduce our fuel consumption even by just a bit eg not having the heating on or turning the temperature down by a degree or so, or reducing the time that the temperature is on. Also, maybe thinking more before making a journey in the car or just driving slower to reduce fuel consumption.

Even if we all reduced our fuel consumption by 10% more that would make a huge difference I think.

So am I unreasonable to think like that?

Maybe the government and employers could take this more seriously though. Our village is overrun with cars at drop off time and maybe 50% of parents have to drive their DC here, because the neighbouring village schools have closed and this now is their catchment area school. Employers insisting on people coming into the office unnecessarily. Cuts to bus and train services meaning people have no choice but to drive. In my village there used to be a bus once an hour, now there is a bus to the local town at 9am and a returning one at 5pm.

Edited

Yep And thats why asking ppl to cut back wont work

frecklejuice · 09/03/2026 17:31

Bus every two hours where I live so I have to take kids to school in the morning then go to work. Son finishes at 1:10 so I pick him up and take him home then I have to go back out to get younger one at 3:10 then back home! After that it’s in and out to whatever they have on in the evenings, no chance of me doing any less.

Noras · 09/03/2026 17:32

i have turned down my heating, run it minimally and during the evenings throw a blanket on my legs to keep warm. I also have a wood burner reserved for when it’s really really cold. We rarely if never use the oven and have an air drier although most meals are made on the hobb. We have a hybrid car so rarely use petrol. I’m investigating solar panels but I have an issue with the orientation of my house. I was also waiting for the more advanced panels to arrive with perovskyvite or whatever it’s called as designed by Oxford, I also plan to get cavity wall insulation as our houses have cavities despite being built in the 1990s with inner thermalite blocks. So far I have changed all the windows to more thermally efficient and also the back door. I have also put in insulation to the flooring which helps a little.

i think on a larger scale I am trying to cut down my overall consumption and think are these things needed.

However with what’s going on I do feel annoyed that we are still beholden to the Middle East. I ageee that we should I have more nuclear like France. We also need to expedite renewables eg put solar panels on every tall building or car parking area. I would also open up more North Sea Oil field licences as a temporary measure to pay for all the green infrastructure and to help expedite if further. N fact I would increase the licences now to try to pump more oil out and use the money to pay for the green energy development.

Im surprised that Government buildings and local authorities do not all have solar panels etc.

As a government, they could perhaps remind people to only make necessary trips or less frequent social trips etc.

Any chance of leading a campaign in your area to get better buses? I guess the question would be if there was a bus would you use it ?

it seems a chicken and egg situation as the bus services are hopeless but won’t get better unless we all get in buses.

I already have a heated throw. I can’t cope with any less heat or im in pain.

I don’t have a tumble dried, cook as efficiently as possible. House is all electric so my options are limited b that plus I rent.

exactly what more should I be doing? I don’t even use a bloody hair dryer any more

Mischance · 09/03/2026 17:37

Do you honestly think that people will give up their ability to fly off on holidays at the drop of a hat? - I don't think so!

I never fly as I care about the planet and about fuel waste. But everyone has got so used to this luxury that it is seen as a right.

Maybe it will change when the prices goes up.

well they will if the cost of flights triples

The bus services will never meet the needs of many people nowadays. I wouldn't use one unless I was entirely priced out of driving.

I have a reasonably regular bus service to my work place. But in Scotland the weather is crap, my 30 minute comfortable journey to my workplace, coming and going as I please, would turn into at least an hour 15 mins each way, getting cold/wet in work clothes walking between the bus stop and home/work, unpleasantly squished up to the stranger next to me in a crowed (too hot for outdoor jacket but nowhere to put a wet jacket) bus, carrying a large (probably wet) backpack with laptop/lunch/everything I need for a day at work (hot desk with no lockers), coming out later in the dark to walk to bus stop alone wary of those around me.

Getting everyone back on buses is not the only answer, encouraging more hybrid working or public coworking hubs, encouraging employers into the suburbs and local employment, kids in local schools and nurseries.

Reduce the need to travel instead of just shifting how people travel would be a better campaign to lead.

Like the school run parents who get their cars out even though they are within walking distance?

Has it occurred to you that most people do this for reasons other than laziness?

EarthlyNightshade · 09/03/2026 18:01

People seem to be taking this really personally!
OP is asking people to cut down if they can.

The world is fucked if people don't cut down on their use of fossil fuels. Individuals won't unless governments do and/or give incentives to individuals.

I am glad I am not young now, the world has become a really selfish, uncomfortable place to be.

igelkott2026 · 09/03/2026 18:03

I agree, but try telling the parents that who get to my road near a school an hour before school pick-up and leave their engine running the whole time.

Petrol is clearly far too cheap.

My neighbours never walk anywhere, and we live about 7 minutes' walk from the local town centre. They could save a lot of fuel!

They really don't. If they were dashing from work, they'd be there 2 mins before.

They are coming from their homes about 10 minutes' walk away. Got to show off the SUV now haven't we. What would the point be of having one if it sat on the drive?

They'll soon be whining when their house is flooded because of climate change. But it won't be their fault, just everyone else's.

I am walking distance to school. However, I also have to go to work. If I walked I would not be able to get to work on time. What do you suggest I do?

Same ! No other option

Itsmetheflamingo · 09/03/2026 18:09

Honestly OP what is the point? What outcome does it give you to use less power?

Just think for a second about industrial and commercial use. I work for a company who use more energy in a warehouse every week than your street does in a year. What good is your reduction, really?

there isn’t an oil supply problem, there is a transport problem. When that is resolved, oil will move

it will be more expensive, long term. How are you doing your bit by using less, as opposed to just paying for it?

we import small amounts of oil from the gulf. Why stop buying from our Norwegian friends? Who are we helping? Other countries who will buy up the spare capacity and become better customers of theirs than us? Bit of an own goal!

This isn't the case in my village. The road outside the school is quiet at 3.20, it fills up from 3.25.

We are lucky here that we have decent wrap around provision. Lots of families need two parents working full time now. In my DS' previous school there wasn't wrap around so for those that couldn't rely on Grandparents they would need to try and juggle this with partners and get from work to school as quickly as possible.

Aiming4Optimistic · 09/03/2026 18:12

This is only realistic when people live within walking distance of their jobs and schools and when there are cheap, frequent bus/rail services in every town and village. Since we have none of that, people have to drive.
And it's unreasonable to expect them not to use their cars when they aren't at work just because America has once again caused a war without getting international consent!

faerylights · 09/03/2026 18:13

When celebrities like Taylor Swift stop jetting around the world, I'll start thinking about turning my heating down from 19 to 18 degrees. Until then, fuck it.

EarthlyNightshade · 09/03/2026 18:06

I can’t. I’m disabled. I can’t easily manage e bus or train. I have electric heating and im in pain if I’m cold. Incontinence means more washing.

im already as frugal as I can be thanks to cost of living.

Benvenuto · 09/03/2026 18:31

It’s hard for the individual unless they have good rail / bus / cycle / walking routes - but it’s not unreasonable for central & local government to plan transport so it offers people more choice on how to travel. Where I live, improving local rail has the potential to reduce commuting times for lots of people - but it’s not a campaigning priority for MPs, although upgrading roads is (even though that’s more expensive and won’t really have that much impact on commuting times). Safe cycle routes could also help people for shorter journeys, but my council hasn’t been very active on that recently - so if I’m travelling in some directions I cycle as it’s safe and easy, whereas other directions aren’t due to having to cycle in heavy traffic. That’s a shame if petrol prices are going up, as being able to swap even a few journeys a week could potentially help someone on a low income.
