To have a shower while a contractor works at our home?

Husband also at home, me fully dressed into the bathroom, lock the door, shower, coming fully dressed out of the bathroom again. DH thinks this would be very weird and make the contractor feel uncomfortable.

I wouldn't do it, id just wait til he goes til I had a shower.

Catcatcatcatcat · 09/03/2026 09:03

I wouldn’t but I have had some bad experiences.

Isobel201 · 09/03/2026 09:04

I can't really relax when someone is doing a job in the house, so I wouldn't have had a shower or done anything major. I usually sit in the living room until they're done. But if you feel comfortable, go for it.

Just have your shower. If DH has an opinion, he can use that opinion to direct how he, himself, behaves.

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 09/03/2026 09:06

A suitable compromise would be to tell the contractor you are going to shower but you will be doing so in a swimming costume. This way you get your shower but he's also aware you won't be nude.

I don’t think I would feel comfortable to have a shower while a tradesman was working in the house. We are currently renovating our house and have had a lot of workers in; I tend to just shower before they arrive in the morning. I do also feel strange going to the bathroom if a stranger is working in the house, but if you feel comfortable enough, that’s up to you.

This makes absolutely no sense. You can’t shower and it bothers you to know that tradesmen or builders know that you have the normal bodily function that they have too?

Or wearing a full wetsuit. OK, you’re not going to get clean, but at least the OP’s DH’s mind will be put at rest about the lustful imaginings of the unfortunate contractor?

FryingPam · 09/03/2026 09:12

It’s just the timings today, I couldn’t go for a run early in the morning and I can’t in the evening, but I could squeeze it in during my lunch break (WFH) but want a shower afterwards.

This thread is nothing dramatic btw, DH wouldn’t stop me from having a shower and I also would survive without one, I just found it interesting to see if others also think it’s weird doing this while a stranger is at home.

I'm an electrician, I can be in a customers home for a week or more on bigger jobs, they crack on with life as normal - I wouldn't be paying much attention to them unless they want to discuss something or offer me a cuppa! - certainly what you describe would be totally normal!

😂

NewZebra · 09/03/2026 09:22

I personally would feel a bit weird myself, but if you don’t then it’s fine! Doubt the contractor would be bothered at all.

Unfenced · 09/03/2026 09:24

Can I ask the people who say they would never shower with a workman in the house why not? What is it they imagine will happen? The workman going through your knicker drawer or checking cupboards for rolls of fifties? Slacking off? Lustfully imagining you soaping your bosoms?

🤣🤣 Just imagine…”do you want a cuppa? No, ok, I’ll have a shower now, I shall be wearing my swimsuit!”. Or I could just put my swimsuit on and parade through the flat first.

Same. I wouldn't do it as I can't relax.
They might be tramping muddy boots through my house if I'm not there to stop them.

Parsleyforme · 09/03/2026 09:25

I don’t see the problem with the contractor hearing the shower water from the next room?? Better not go for a wee either in case he hears the toilet flushing. Is DH a bit of a jealous man and doesn’t want other men to think of you naked?

DelectableMe · 09/03/2026 09:27

How long will the shower take? It's behind a locked door, right? Either just go for it, or don't go for a run.
I agree with pp - your DH seems to have got some strange ideas from somewhere 🤔

I wouldn't just because I would feel vulnerable, although less so if my DH was at home. Nothing to do with the workman himself or specially what he might do, I just wouldn't feel comfortable.

I would also be concerned that the workman would probably need to ask me a question as soon as I got in the shower - if my DH is working at home he's on calls all day and not easily able to extract himself so I wouldn't want to inconvenience the workman if he needed something while I shower.

OneBreezyHelper · 09/03/2026 09:30

Your husband is weird. How does he feel about you using the loo when there's a contractor at home?

Would he feel weird having a shower himself? Contractor is allowed to be gay.

I wouldn't be comfortable if I was home alone, or just with my kids, but with husband in the house? Fair enough you get ready before anyone comes in the house, but getting changed after sport or before going out? Surely it's normal.

OneBreezyHelper · 09/03/2026 09:31

Catcatcatcatcat · 09/03/2026 09:03

with your husband in the house at the same time?

What kind of experiences?

Wallywobbles · 09/03/2026 09:32

Are you locking yourself in with the contractor because that would be wierd.

MmeWorthington · 09/03/2026 09:32

I wouldn’t do it if I was on my own in the flat, I would just feel vulnerable. Not necessarily a rational feeling but I just would.

But fine if another person is in the flat.

Ask your DH what he thinks about when a woman showers and what he is projecting on to the contractor that could make him feel uncomfortable??

Does he think the world is one long Carry On film where double entendres are exchanged through the door as the water flows?

Bristolandlazy · 09/03/2026 09:33

Your contractor doesn't care what you or anyone else is doing in their house whilst they're working. Your husband is strange.

No none of that, it just somehow feels wrong not to be showered & dressed, ready for the day when they turn up to work.

However, it wouldn't bother me to have a shower if I'd been out for a run & DH was home to answer any questions/do anything the contractor might need.

@FryingPam it seems more odd to me that this is a conversation you've had prior to it actually happening.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 09/03/2026 09:35

The workman will be glad you're just carrying on around him, he'd feel more uncomfortable if he thought he was preventing you from doing what you need to do.

What you did is fine.

Daisylove1 · 09/03/2026 09:36

We had loads of work done in the summer, I’d routinely go to the gym in the morning, and when I was back the builders would turn the water on so I could have a shower. I didn’t for a minute think it was inappropriate, neither did they. I’m baffled as to why your husband thinks it’s a problem?
