To have a shower while a contractor works at our home?

Husband also at home, me fully dressed into the bathroom, lock the door, shower, coming fully dressed out of the bathroom again. DH thinks this would be very weird and make the contractor feel uncomfortable.

Can I ask the people who say they would never shower with a workman in the house why not? What is it they imagine will happen? The workman going through your knicker drawer or checking cupboards for rolls of fifties? Slacking off? Lustfully imagining you soaping your bosoms?

in my case its not really necessary anyway - I'd rather just have them do whatever they need to do, and then I can relax when they leave and feel more comfortable doing what I need to do. I usually shower at odd times compared to other people anyway as I work from home, so I don't do early morning showers before work because I can take a break at any time and shower later.

DelectableMe · 09/03/2026 09:37

I would imagine that the vast majority of contractors are used to working in households, where life goes on.

This makes absolutely no sense. You can’t shower and it bothers you to know that tradesmen or builders know that you have the normal bodily function that they have too?

I think everyone is different - those are my feelings and it is not for anyone else to try to invalidate them. I did indicate to the OP that it was up to whatever she felt comfortable with.

When you are in your house alone with several men you don’t know very well, I just would not feel right having a shower. It has never presented an issue as I would just shower before they arrive.

It is not about “bodily functions”, it is because when you are in the bathroom, it is when you are at your most vulnerable and if I can avoid that, I will.

Also, for a period of time when our doors were being replaced and hardware being installed, we didn’t have a lock on the bathroom!

A suitable compromise would be to tell the contractor you are going to shower but you will be doing so in a swimming costume. This way you get your shower but he's also aware you won't be nude.

Or maybe a Victorian style bathing machine. They look fun.

Isobel201 · 09/03/2026 09:41

In fact the last time I had two people in working on the blocked radiators in the house, they were there all day! I was able to use the toilet - quick pee is okay, but I showered the day before, so at least I felt clean.

Jacopo · 09/03/2026 09:43

He's worried that the contractor will suddenly go berserk, smash down the bathroom door, and re-enact the shower scene from Psycho.

BauhausOfEliott · 09/03/2026 09:48

All the people saying “I wouldn’t feel comfortable” - can you actually explain why?

sleepylittlebunnies · 09/03/2026 09:49

We’ve had tradesmen in for weeks at a time over the years. I ensure they know where the tea, coffee, milk etc is, and show them the downstairs loo. I remind them I work nights, reassure them that they don’t need to worry about any noise, as the work needs doing, take the dog to bed with me so he’s not in their way. Then I sleep. Admittedly it would be trickier in a small flat, but in my experience, and DH as a tradie, tradespeople expect customers’ lives to carry on.

Greysnuggle · 09/03/2026 09:50

I’m with your husband. I’d feel odd about having a shower while a contractor was walking past the bathroom door or in the next room. It would be different if it was in a completely different part of the house.
There’s nothing wrong about doing it tbh, but it’s just something I’d never do. It feels socially very awkward somehow.

ETA I’d feel the same way if DH had his male friends round, I wouldn’t be going for a shower in the room adjacent while they were there.

Husband is probably re-living all of the 1970s porn he watched in secret when his parents went out.

Yep. It’s his “man thoughts” 😂

He thinks the contractor will be thinking about you all soaped up in the shower while you’re in it and he can hear the water running.

My DH would be funny about this as well. I’d still carry on. Probably.

Please do this, just for fun!

Honestly this is one of the most batshit things I have read on here!

mindutopia · 09/03/2026 09:55

Dh and I have both had showers while builders are here. They’re here all day every day and will be for months. If we need a shower to get cleaned up from work, we can’t both just wait til 5pm when they’re gone. We’ve got things to do in the evening and need to crack on with our day. There isn’t enough hot water for all of us to shower at night anyway.

Edited

fair enough, but do you never have friends staying over for a few days?

with your husband in the house at the same time?

What kind of experiences?

Let’s just say I had to call the police…

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/03/2026 09:58

Well, I suppose the plumber might feel uncomfortable if he’s caught spying on you through the keyhole, but otherwise your dh is being daft.

Is your husband controlling in other areas of your relationship?

How did you come to this idea? OP said h thinks it would be weird and make contractor uncomfortable, nowhere has she mentioned anyrhing to the contrary.

Namingbaba · 09/03/2026 10:01

I wouldn’t do it if alone as you don’t know when contractor might need to ask something etc. However in your case if your husband is there he can deal with that.

FancyCatSlave · 09/03/2026 10:03

I lived in a small cottage during major renovations- contractors were onsite for months at a time.
They saw me in my pyjamas and dressing gown frequently and yes I showered with them
present.

I mostly carry on as usual when contractors are here apart from I avoid walking around in my pants. They don’t need to see that.

Lennonjingles · 09/03/2026 10:06

My DH is a retired bathroom installer, unless he was working in the actual room, he wouldn’t have a problem with you using your bathroom providing door is locked and you come out covered up, fully clothed is best.

DH has a lot of stories I won’t go into, but some customers, both male and female, did some inappropriate actions.

On my screen the word "present" is on the line below, so it reads like "yes I showered with them" 😂

Yes, me too! It made me pause for a moment.

Ah, see - now you have to tell us!

Endofyear · 09/03/2026 10:15

The contractor is used to working in other people's homes. I'm sure he couldn't care less what you're doing, he just wants to get his work done and go! Your husband is being weird 😂

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 09/03/2026 10:17

Contractor wouldn't know. You could just be cleaning the bathroom for all they know.

Starlight1979 · 09/03/2026 10:25

Pricesandvices · 09/03/2026 08:53

It's fine if your husband is in.

I can't do anything when I have tradesmen in as I have to watch the front door like a hawk as they never bloody shut it despite me asking.

Why does her husband have to be in?!

We had builders in for 6 months doing our extension. DH was out of the house every day so I showered pretty much most days with a house full of blokes. I'd just take my change of clothes into the bathroom, shower, dry myself and get changed.

Can't see why this would be an issue for anyone unless your husband is very jealous or controlling (which I'm guessing he is).
