To buy my first house two minutes down the street from traveller housing initiative?

Please give me advice.
I’m sale agreed on a new build house in Dublin . I found out that there is a new traveller housing initiative going in right across the road from me. Please don’t say I’m being snobby I’m really not. I’ve just heard stories of anti social behaviour etc. I know there’s always some lovely people but I’m nervous.

Do I give the house up because of this? It’s a substantial amount of houses for the traveller scheme all together - six very large detached four bedroom homes. It is two minutes walk from me. I drove up to the development to see and the traveller housing initiative is not in front of me directly as I thought. It is not in front of or behind me but about 2 minutes walk down the road. I can only see gable end of one of the houses from mine. Not directly facing.
I need to sign contacts in 2 days and I am so torn.
Otherwise it’s perfect house for me. With this information are you saying yes or no?

I notice a distinct ignorance attitude between Ireland and the UK.

Ireland is far more progressive regarding the Travelling Community. You must employ them and allow them into schools over there. Because of that, they are productive members of society and judgement is far less over there. The vast majority of Irish people would never dream of using disgusting terms as a descriptor towards them as the TC are robustly protected under the Equality Act.

Lets skip across to the UK shall we?...the Travelling Community are renouned for causing trouble. Why? Because they are persecuted for who they are. There is a distinct prejudice against them. Terms such as "Pikeys" are a common term, even amongst 'educated' British people.

Typical of Britain and just only serves to highlight that Ireland is a far more progressive country, and not just in that respect, but multiple respects.

This certainly isn't my experience. I lived in Waterford with my Irish partner for 17 years and the prejudice against them was off the scale. Way more than I've heard in the UK.

That’s likely because Waterford is a hot spot for Traveller feuds and trouble. They’ve been bombing, beating, stabbing and murdering each other, and others, for decades in that city. There’s two massive families in particular that have flooded that city with drugs, destroying countless families. Not in the least bit surprising their neighbours don’t look kindly on them.

At least you won't be short of tarmac and may be offered 'discounted goods'

@Sartre ’The stereotype stems from a small section of them committing crimes and the media blowing it up’

The Lived experiences told here would indicate it’s the majority, not a small minority, committing crimes.

If you've got time to google the murder of children to make an anti-traveller point, you need to take a serious look at yourself.

So, so fucked up.

Ant yet JollyGreenSleeves did similar,
Is that also so so fucked up 🤔
@JollyGreenSleeves would you buy or live beside one of these places? If not, why not?

When I’ve chosen a house previously it’s based on walking distance to local school, number of bedrooms, budget, near wider family, never once have I considered the ethnicity/race of the neighbours. Why multiple people have asked the same question with, let’s face it, an obvious answer, I don’t know. You’re never going to sound clever while looking down your nose at others.

I just hope that the kids of the racist mothers (if that’s what they are) on this thread are able to see past the hatred that they learn at home.

Imagine being a kid from the travelling community, going to school and hearing all the racism being posted on this thread? Aren’t you ashamed of yourselves?

I was brought up knowing that you don’t look up and you don’t look down. Thank god I was brought up with the ability to treat others as I would want to be treated.

The views on this thread make my skin crawl honestly.

Racists are difficult to debate with too, because your ideas are not born from logic or objectivity but prejudice and bias- much of it just doesn’t make any sense.

I bet you’re racist about other groups of people too. Sad.

ive lived on the same street as a permanent traveller camp. It was fine.

you will have lived near, worked with etc lots of people from travelling communities. It only registers with you when there’s a problem. I’ve lived experience like others and most travellers are decent, same as any other human beings.

@MelMar1conscious you were to sign contracts today right? Have you decided what you are going to do?

Our local community PC told us that most of the theft in our rural area is carried out by travellers and I think the police would know!

Entire pieces of legislation (PACE anyone?!) were written to combat racism/miscarriages of justice/brutality in the police. But you think the police would know! 🥴

A wonderful lady! If only more could be like her then so many people wouldn’t be severely affected by the behaviour of members of her community, and we wouldn’t be here having this discussion.

I think they would know who was committing the majority of theft in the area, don’t you?

No I don’t- maybe they unfairly target travellers like they used to disproportionately stop and search black people and statistics are skewed.

I’m pretty sure there are thieves in all ethnicities.

Well if you had an ounce of sense you wouldn't take the risk.
