Am I right to be suspicious of my male flatmate wishing me a happy International Women’s Day?

My male flatmate wished me a happy International Women’s Day. I reacted with suspicion as to why he even knows that this exists, and that he might have ulterior motives for wanting to practice being “sensitive and thoughtful” to women. He thinks it is a good thing and that he’s “progressive”. AIBU?

Thank you everyone. Flatmate is immensely gratified by the replies. I’ve told him he can now spend the rest of the day patting himself on the back about how thoughtful and progressive he is.

Oh well, that's alright then. I'm sure he feels better for your patronisation.

And yes, I know you're going to say you were joking. It doesn't make you look any better.

Maybe move to a house with female flatmates only.

If I were him I might look for somewhere else to live.

I hope he told you where to put your patronising comment.

My dh said it today too, said it as if it was Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day with no hint of sarcasm or the ‘why do women have a day?’ thing you usually hear about! I am also suspicious 😅

You never watched Man About The House?

TV sitcoms are for entertainment.
I don't confuse fiction with reality.

A woman sharing a flat with a man is more problematic than sharing with another woman. I've managed to reach 60+ without ever meeting any woman who shares a flat with a man that she is not romantically involved with.

There is a risk of sexual abuse by the man, especially when alcohol is added to the mix. I don't see any point in increasing risk of sexual assault.
There's also the risk that either thinks they're in a relationship.
Not worth the hassle.

I know several women who've shared flats and houses with men. You have your opinion but it isn't shared by everyone.

surrealpotato · 08/03/2026 15:10

Yeah I'd find this creepy, cringey and annoying, but I would even if a woman said it. I don't like these 'days' being forced on me, and I'm not a feminist.

My opinion doesn't have to be shared by anyone else on any topic.
That's the beauty of opinions.

Why wouldn't he know it exists? 😆

Find something else to get your knickers in a twist about.

This is not it.

There is nothing more dangerous than a bored, slightly unhinged, lonely woman.

They tend to make up fake scenarios for attention and then claim 'tongue in cheek'..like it makes it all okay then. Nope, you are unhinged and odd. Get help.

Apart from an unsanded, untreated bare floorboard. They're a nasty splinter hazard. Apart from those, no greater danger on earth than this, that's for sure.

So true, bored and lonely men never talk shite to get attention on the internet. Do they, eh?

Put a memo in your phone now. November 19th, International Mens Day.

Or, if you can’t wait, September 19th, International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

ps Talk is cheap, did he buy you gin? Or daffodils?

Who are you talking about?

SynthEsjs · 08/03/2026 16:04

Are you serious? The appropriate response is “thanks”.
