Am I right to be suspicious of my male flatmate wishing me a happy International Women’s Day?

My male flatmate wished me a happy International Women’s Day. I reacted with suspicion as to why he even knows that this exists, and that he might have ulterior motives for wanting to practice being “sensitive and thoughtful” to women. He thinks it is a good thing and that he’s “progressive”. AIBU?

I see your points. This is a bit of a tongue-in-cheek post, I reacted with joking suspicion and told him “oh yeah I bet you say that to all your younger female colleagues, I bet they think you’re so sensitive and thoughtful”. He pointed out he has only ever shagged one much younger female colleague and that was “a completely two way thing”

Oh turn it in for goodness sake.

Wrap up warm and go get some fresh air.

You are just taking the piss aren’t you OP. I’ll bet you don’t even have a male flatmate.

Brefugee · 08/03/2026 10:28

well i'm not in the UK and it is all over my social media, my husband and several male friends have wished me happy IWD (or "feministischer kampftag" as some call it here) and it's great

When i worked at an international company a few years ago, the chaps in our Polish factory arranged with the men in our other locations for every woman to receive a flower. It was lovely.

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 08/03/2026 10:28

I wished a Welsh friend Happy St David's Day last Sunday - and I'm not Welsh myself, so I wonder if this makes me a terrible monster?

I knew he wasn't going to be doing anything celebratory on the day that would revolutionise his life, and even if he had been, my wish to him would have made no difference to him either way; it's just a small token way of acknowledging people and that you think about them and value them.

SideshowAuntSallyxx · 08/03/2026 10:29

I've just turned on the TV and it's a special International Womens Day thing.

It feels weird having it on a Sunday though.

Its creepy.

How many posters have woken up this morning, to be wished ‘a happy international women’s day’ by the men folk in their lives???………thought so

🙋
Admittedly an immigrant though. Newspapers in my native country even run articles on good text wishes to not sound cringy😂

HeadyLamarr · 08/03/2026 10:31

Seriously? It's been going for a long time now. It's always the Google Doodle on March 8th, and they have been banners and publicised events for ages.

Richard Herring used to spend every March 8th replying to every berk on Twitter asking when International Men's Day was (it's November 19th).

Why wouldn't your flatmate know when it is?

Me!
And my daughter.

Megifer · 08/03/2026 10:33

So you said a version of "i bet you say that to all the ladies"

Dude probably thinks youre flirting with him now 😂

blythet · 08/03/2026 10:33

You sound like fun to live with! Even moreso after reading your passive aggressive ‘jokey’ response.

He’s probably the unreasonable one suggesting you can have any kind of happy day from the sounds of it.

Thesummer · 08/03/2026 10:35

Gosh it sounds like you're in a really unsafe environment, I'd be getting your ducks in a row and planning to move ASAP if I were you.

I have 🙋🏻‍♀️ by my dad in his 70s. He sent it to a group chat with me, my mum & my sister. Presumably after seeing it plastered all
over social media.

it was a lovely message about how strong we are & how proud he is of the amazing women in his life

When I read how she responded to him this was my exact thought. Maybe she does have a thing for him

FastFood · 08/03/2026 10:37

I understand OP, my neighbour wished me a merry Christmas, I reported them to the council.

sanityisamyth · 08/03/2026 10:37

Yeah it’s really suspicious … I think you should leave the flat share (so he doesn’t have to share his living space with someone batshit!)

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 08/03/2026 10:37

What on earth would be the point of the day if nobody for whom the day wasn't for knew of its existence?

Are women so socially conditioned 'not to be a bother' to anybody else and always minimise and put themselves last that they need a special day to celebrate and acknowledge their great value in society; but "let's not make a fuss about it and actually tell anybody, eh"?

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 08/03/2026 10:39

He'll be sure now to make sure that he doesn't offend you next year, and will mark it big on his calendar to wish you an UNhappy IWD, if that's your preference.

Saynototheinevitable · 08/03/2026 10:40

There's something wrong with you to even think this....

I have. He remembers every year. And he’s said to our daughters.

Toomuchprivateinfo · 08/03/2026 10:42

It’s all over mainstream and social media, that’s how he knows. Yabu.

Tigercrane · 08/03/2026 10:43

As a suspicious person myself, give him a chance perhaps he is genuine?Unless you have a back story on him?

There is nothing creepy about it at all! My Dad sent me a message this morning and he is taking my mum and sisters (different country) to a celebration lunch.
