Am I right to be suspicious of my male flatmate wishing me a happy International Women’s Day?

My male flatmate wished me a happy International Women’s Day. I reacted with suspicion as to why he even knows that this exists, and that he might have ulterior motives for wanting to practice being “sensitive and thoughtful” to women. He thinks it is a good thing and that he’s “progressive”. AIBU?

DH said it to me because it had just come up on his SM. He’s been a feminist ally his entire adult life. Presumably you know your flatmate and can determine whether he’s a covert misogynist, though?

Errrm. It's international, there are posts everywhere, articles, and in some countries it's actually done more even with flowers, events etc...
Uk is pretty tamed with it sadly

MidnightPatrol · 08/03/2026 10:13

Sounds like a happy home

Duckiewasthefirstniceguy · 08/03/2026 10:14

What, precisely, is wrong with you?

CypressGrove · 08/03/2026 10:14

Maybe move to a house with female flatmates only.

Westfacing · 08/03/2026 10:14

Poor guy, under suspicion for being thoughtful!

Mingspingpongball · 08/03/2026 10:15

Why suspicious? Do you think he’s actually hiding behind feminist sympathies to get one over on you, someone else..?

if someone wished me a happy international women’s day I’d laugh because it’s like why is an international day (of worth) “happy” for me? It’s not like “happy birthday “ which means enjoy a celebration of a you-specific day or happy Christmas meaning have a happy time celebrating over the Christmas period or words to that effect.

Are you a bit afraid of him?

Not just thoughtful, but also knowing giant international event exists😂

Wordsmithery · 08/03/2026 10:15

Perhaps you should give him the benefit of the doubt and not be so suspicious of his motives.

Maybe this more common in european countries, I used to have a colleague who gave every single woman in the building a single flower on womens day. He'd probably get called to HR these days.

ParisianLady · 08/03/2026 10:17

Not sure what you’d be suspicious of, what’s his nasty motive in saying such a thing?

Perhaps you should move to an all female household if a simple friendly greeting has you this riled and suspicious

newornotnew · 08/03/2026 10:17

I reacted with suspicion as to why he even knows that this exists every radio station, TV channel, newspaper, SM site has covered it. It's not a secret.

ainsleysanob · 08/03/2026 10:17

Men can’t do right for doing wrong with some women can they?

Poor bloke! He won’t do that again. Why are you house-sharing with people you don’t like?

Yes in some countries women's day is a huge deal and men would basically wish a happy day to all their female acquaintances

Rizzz · 08/03/2026 10:24

Ooh now let's see.

Does he have access to a television, the internet, a radio?

Does he have working ears and eyes?

If none of the above apply, then you're right to be absolutely suspicious.

AtIusvue · 08/03/2026 10:25
