Dogs in hotels

SlouchyBeanie · 07/03/2026 19:51

Staying in a chain hotel. Just seen two lots of dogs being taken to stay in a room. One lot was 2 spaniels, the other was a sausage dog and a bigger one I can't identify. I mean, what the fuck!?? I'm allergic to dogs and how do I know if there's been one in my room? Easy, I feel a bit unwell. Am I completely alone in thinking dogs have no business being in hotels and their owners are shit owners to imagine their dogs would enjoy this sort of experience. As I type, a third one has arrived, a terrier looking thing. I'm totally gobsmacked at the number of dogs in this hotel and find it unacceptable. I feel quite fired up about this at the moment, probably made worse by the barking and yapping I can hear. So am I being unreasonable that dogs should not be allowed in hotels?

Every hotel I've ever stayed in with my dog has had specific "pet friendly" rooms that are clearly advertised when you book.

YABU.

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/03/2026 19:53

If the hotel advertises itself as dog friendly there will be dogs. Check before you go next time.

Catisheavyonmylap · 07/03/2026 19:54

Bloody madness! These greedy businesses that only see the £! and don’t give a damn about the rest of us who don’t want to share a hotel/cafe/garden centre with dogs - I don’t go to cafes anymore that allow them.

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/03/2026 19:56

Businesses are all about the £££ that's the point. They're not charities for people who hate dogs.

Sunshineandrainbow · 07/03/2026 19:56

I have contacted hotels to ask for a non dog friendly room before.

Dd is allergic, not sure if the dog would have to be there though for it to affect her but still.

What else did you think a business was about if not making money? Confused

Would you if it was cats?…🤨

I stayed in a hotel just before Christmas (shock, horror with my dog) and they only had 3 pet friendly rooms. Not a lot at all compared to the number of other rooms.

My dog neither yapped or barked.

BlessedCheesemaker · 07/03/2026 20:04

I was going to book a boutique sorta hotel recently but every single room was mooted as dog friendly. So I didn't book it, no hotel cleaner is given enough time that it feels comfortable to book. Dogs are fine generally but I don't want 200 anonymous dogs arses wiped on that blanket thing on the end of the bed and cushions that definitely aren't changed between customers in most hotels (or are they? Any hotel cleaners want to tell me otherwise I'll be really happy to know if I'm wrong)

A good business listens to ALL of their customers. It doesn’t matter how unhygienic or dangerous it is in some cases for people with allergies, these businesses only see the money opportunities. As I said, I vote with my feet.

WiddlinDiddlin · 07/03/2026 20:04

Where do they stay then if they need to travel with their owners? Just vanish and reappear when the owner gets back in the car?

Any room could have a dog in it as assistance dogs are allowed practically anywhere, so even a 'dog free' hotel is no guarantee.

Businesses exist to turn a profit. They're not there to provide you with a dog free hotel room.

You're not staying a hotel in Birmingham are you?

TreeBirds · 07/03/2026 20:05

We’ve stayed in hotels with our dogs, they’re happy as long as they’re with us. We’ve usually used a hotel to be by the beach which they love. If hotels are happy to have them then 🤷🏻‍♀️. Stay somewhere that doesn’t allow dogs or complain to get the hotel policy changed if you’re bothered.

ChoosingMyOwnRandomUsername · 07/03/2026 20:07

Why would a dog not enjoy sleeping in a hotel room? 😂

If it would be below the dogs' standard, maybe you shouldn't go op...

Of course they only see the money opportunities - otherwise they won't survive.

And yes, as you say, you can vote with your feet - just as dog owners will vote with their feet and continue to visit places that allow them to bring their pets.

Win-win.

There's absolutely no need for dogs to stay in hotels. They're animals, if you have to take them with you somewhere they can stay in the car overnight with a window cracked open, it won't kill them.
I recently went on a city break, was about to book a really nice independent hotel when I read the bit of the website that said they were dog friendly. So the chain hotel that did not allow dogs got my business instead.

There's no need for humans to stay in hotels either - maybe you should sleep in your car with the window cracked open instead.

Tutorpuzzle · 07/03/2026 20:10

I’m surprised you didn’t check before booking if you have allergies. And if chain hotels are your thing, Premier Inn don’t allow dogs at all. You need to take more responsibility for yourself, and not expect businesses to do your thinking for you.

Why would anyone leave their dog alone in a car when they can sleep in a hotel on a bed? 😅

Tbh if you're especially adverse to the idea of germs, no hotel at all is probably the only option.

The cushions in dog free rooms may not have dogs arse on them but they're just as likely to have human shit, spit, piss or spunk on them.

Good lord. No, leaving your dog in a car with the “window cracked” isn’t acceptable. What IS acceptable is for all people to choose hotels that suit them, either dog friendly, or not. It’s not hard. Please do stop choosing dog friendly hotels (because they are not THAT common) and then whining about it.

Don't be ridiculous - the dog would probably bark like crazy and upset everyone nearby. Plus there would be a good chance that someone would steal it.

You wouldn't leave your lap top in your car, why would you leave your dog?

Surely dogs don’t sleep on beds even in pet-friendly hotels? I thought most places had a no dogs on furniture rule.

KenAdams · 07/03/2026 20:15

What? We take our dog to a hotel if we're on a long journey we need to break up. We don't take her for a "hotel experience", how weird. It's also quite difficult to china a dog friendly hotel as most don't allow dogs, so if you didn't do your research, don't complain. For future reference, Premier Inns don't allow dogs and neither do most IHG or Hiltons.

As pp said, you shouldn't stay in any hotel ever if you're that allergic as assistance dogs are allowed everywhere.

You're right, our dogs are usually in the bed. They like to be warm under covers.
