Dogs in hotels

SlouchyBeanie · 07/03/2026 19:51

Staying in a chain hotel. Just seen two lots of dogs being taken to stay in a room. One lot was 2 spaniels, the other was a sausage dog and a bigger one I can't identify. I mean, what the fuck!?? I'm allergic to dogs and how do I know if there's been one in my room? Easy, I feel a bit unwell. Am I completely alone in thinking dogs have no business being in hotels and their owners are shit owners to imagine their dogs would enjoy this sort of experience. As I type, a third one has arrived, a terrier looking thing. I'm totally gobsmacked at the number of dogs in this hotel and find it unacceptable. I feel quite fired up about this at the moment, probably made worse by the barking and yapping I can hear. So am I being unreasonable that dogs should not be allowed in hotels?

There's absolutely no need for dogs to stay in hotels. They're animals, if you have to take them with you somewhere they can stay in the car overnight with a window cracked open, it won't kill them.
I recently went on a city break, was about to book a really nice independent hotel when I read the bit of the website that said they were dog friendly. So the chain hotel that did not allow dogs got my business instead.

see, it's not that difficult is it. Just don't book pet-friendly rooms.

I have friends who have working dogs. We stay in hotels. The 3 dogs stay in the rear of the car, which is set up for them to sleep comfortably. We take turns to pop down and let them out for 10 minutes and a fuss. Absolutely no need for them to be in a hotel room. Ridiculous.

you are the one who is being ridiculous, and it's animal abuse.

noctilucentcloud · 07/03/2026 21:23

I stay with my dog on long trips when I need to break my journey. We have to stay somewhere. In my experience hotels that allow dogs have dog rooms and non-dog rooms. If you have an allergy surely you'd either stay at a dog-free hotel (eg Premier Inn) or contact the hotel and say you need a room that's dog free? In the same way I ask when I need a ground floor room. My dog is never left unattended in the hotel room, he's not allowed to bark or disturb other guests. You wouldn't know he was there unless you saw us going in or out. Neither is he allowed on the bed or chairs, I bring his cushion and he sleeps on that on the floor. The room is always tidy when we leave but it's usual to be charged an additional cleaning charge when you book to bring your dog. I have sympathies with allergies but you need to be proactive about this.

I work in the hotel industry.

I’d rather sleep in the dog friendly rooms - folk are less likely to be shagging all over the gaff when their dog can see them, therefore less bodily nasties kicking about 😂

Dog friendly rooms tend to be the oldest, most in need of a refurb rooms and far away from reception to minimise footfall going past. Even if they were empty you are VERY unlikely to be assigned them as the hotel wouldn’t want to risk negative reviews - hence why they use them to cash in for the canine clientele - they’re just glad the dog can come in and will overlook the rough edges.

My dog comes on overnight trips with me sometimes. He is excellent for team morale, sleeps like a log away from home (I bring a blanket in from the car to put on bed so he can sleep up there with me) and I have had more broken sleep by drunken guests / children than barking dogs.

Plenty hotels are dog free. Nice to see others allow them. Something for everyone.

As for leaving a dog in a car overnight - absolutely not. For one, he’s worth more than the car. He’s precious. And secondly- massively fair leaving an animal unchecked on its own for 9/10 hours with no clue where it is and when their owners will be back. Too much at risk if they get too hot / too cold etc.

Surely dogs don’t sleep on beds even in pet-friendly hotels? I thought most places had a no dogs on furniture rule.

Well trained working dogs will happily sleep in the back of their familiar car. Probably would prefer it, in my experience. But some owners of 'pet' dogs fail them, by treating them like children.

It's obviously a dog-friendly hotel chain. If the presence of dogs bothers you so much why didn't you check before booking?

igelkott2026 · 07/03/2026 20:46

It's getting quite hard to avoid them though isn't it? I hardly know of any cafes that don't allow dogs inside

And you don't know if they've had flea or tick treatment either.

It's such a problem nowadays isn't it? It's disingenuous to say ' well don't go anywhere that allows dogs". We all know they're funking everywhere

Nah, you don’t know what you’re talking about, and your friend should have her practice reviewed. One of the few things the rspca will take action over is inadequate shelter, and I would strongly suspect this would qualify.

And let’s be honest what dog would prefer a cold car over a comfy, soft bed. None at all.

If that's true it's because that's what the majority of people want.

KenAdams · 07/03/2026 20:15

What? We take our dog to a hotel if we're on a long journey we need to break up. We don't take her for a "hotel experience", how weird. It's also quite difficult to china a dog friendly hotel as most don't allow dogs, so if you didn't do your research, don't complain. For future reference, Premier Inns don't allow dogs and neither do most IHG or Hiltons.

As pp said, you shouldn't stay in any hotel ever if you're that allergic as assistance dogs are allowed everywhere.

Yeah, I almost always use Premier Inn, but this trip they were fully booked, had to book a HIE. I won't be back anytime soon

Great, we dog owners don’t want you there so everyone is happy! 😂

It’s truly mad that dogs are allowed in restaurants, shops and hotels. Esp if there are carpets 🤢 Sign of the times though. They probably sleep in the beds too 🙄

No dogs at Premier Inn, Butlins or The Newt.
Less than a third of UK AirBnB is dog friendly.
About a 50%of UK self catering accommodation doesn't allow dogs.

Must be something for you there OP.

out of curiosity, what difference does it make to you, if a dog sleeps in a hotel bed, as opposed to some unwashed stinky hairy drunk who just stuffed themselves with a pungent curry, or a group of people having wild unprotected sex in that very bed?

If the weather is cold, it will kill them. Many dogs are simply not able to tolerate the British winter outside.

our dogs are part of the family and absolutely would not tolerate being left in a car overnight. They’d make so much noise you’d be begging me to take them into our hotel room!

No.

I expect owners to comply with hotel policies.

If that’s no dogs on furniture, then dogs shouldn’t go on furniture. Anything else is the height of entitlement.

Some people have become socially inept, esp since Covid. They hate people and their dogs are their family etc. They are all over this thread already with their doggy delusions and entitlement! They aren’t going anywhere so we have to live alongside them somehow!

Because nothing is worse than dog smell. Esp wet dog. And I have worked in a hospital for 30 years, and smelt nearly every revolting human smell possible!

Mines is a ‘well trained working dog.’ He happily sleeps in the car after a day out or when I’m seeing to the horses or I nip into the shops- but is never left unchecked for more than an hour or so.

He probably would happily sleep in the car all night. But the difference is- he doesn’t and shouldn’t have to, and I wouldn’t leave him unsupervised whilst I was unconscious and at least a five minute walk away from him.

My dog is very much treated as a dog. However, I'm responsible for his welfare and he'd hate being in my car overnight. Dogs don't sleep in one position, they need to be able to move and stretch out. If my dog was in my car overnight he'd be sore and stiff. He'd likely be too cold in winter (it was below freezing when we did our last trip) and in summer there's the risk of overheating. Then there's the risk of theft. My dog is a rescue and has had separation issues. I put in months of dedicated training every day to sort it and he's made massive progress, but he'd get distressed overnight if on his own in a car. And that's more likely to disturb people as he'd howl and bark. Whereas inside the hotel room with me there won't be a peep out of him.

only idiots take on pets they can't look after.

If you chose to have dogs, and it's not mandatory, you don't dump them in a car or anywhere else because some random hater get offended by the sight of a dog.

You pick a dog-friendly hotel and you keep them with you. It' s really not that hard.

The only inept ones are people booking a dog-friendly room in a dog-friendly hotel and complaining about the dogs 😂

Goldmonkey · 07/03/2026 21:57

I think OP is on a wind up. ‘Leave dogs in the car with the window cracked open’.

I doubt anyone is unintentionally this idiotic.
