Dogs in hotels

SlouchyBeanie · 07/03/2026 19:51

Staying in a chain hotel. Just seen two lots of dogs being taken to stay in a room. One lot was 2 spaniels, the other was a sausage dog and a bigger one I can't identify. I mean, what the fuck!?? I'm allergic to dogs and how do I know if there's been one in my room? Easy, I feel a bit unwell. Am I completely alone in thinking dogs have no business being in hotels and their owners are shit owners to imagine their dogs would enjoy this sort of experience. As I type, a third one has arrived, a terrier looking thing. I'm totally gobsmacked at the number of dogs in this hotel and find it unacceptable. I feel quite fired up about this at the moment, probably made worse by the barking and yapping I can hear. So am I being unreasonable that dogs should not be allowed in hotels?

You're right, our dogs are usually in the bed. They like to be warm under covers.

Jesus.

OneBreezyHelper · 07/03/2026 22:45

those dogs won't get out of the car unless they're in a field or at least a country road.

yes, because it's a well known fact that this breed especially prefers being stuck in a car above nearly everything else 😂

only idiots take on pets they can't look after.

If you chose to have dogs, and it's not mandatory, you don't dump them in a car or anywhere else because some random hater get offended by the sight of a dog.

You pick a dog-friendly hotel and you keep them with you. It' s really not that hard.

The only inept ones are people booking a dog-friendly room in a dog-friendly hotel and complaining about the dogs 😂

Every year since 2009, I've holidayed with my dogs at the same coastal town because it has a clearly designated large section of beach dedicated to dogs on which dogs are free to run around, go for a swim and generally enjoy themselves. And every year I come across at least one person on this section of beach who's scowling at the presence of dogs because they can't be bothered to walk the short distance to the humans-only section. If they start scowling at my dog, I inform them that they are on the dogs-allowed beach, whereas where they need to be is the Blue Flag beach, indicated by the great big Blue Flag that's flying in the distance.😂

I was on a train once with my late terrier. He was shattered from a weekend of training activities, so he spent the entire 2 hours under my seat, gently snoring.

As we got close to my stop, I woke him to put his coat on coz it was pissing down, and we were walking home.

The woman sat opposite me immediately started coughing and complaining that he was setting off her asthma and the smell of him was making her nauseous. She sent her poor, embarassed looking husband off to find a member of staff to complain because dogs are not allowed on trains.

I bit my tongue, but I really, really wanted to say "dude, he's been here for two fucking hours, and you've only just noticed."

Snaletrale · 07/03/2026 22:53

My dog doesn’t particularly enjoy the hotel experience- doesn’t hate it either, but what he does love is the exciting walks and new places to visit near the hotel which is the sole purpose of taking him.

Dogs won't get out of the car if they're not in the middle of a field. Why would they? They're dogs living a healthy active doggy life. Why would they want to be in a hotel? They'd be totally perplexed. They sleep in the car regularly when they're out working and their owners are camping/fishing/shooting. Nope. I just can't imagine them being holed up on the 3rd floor in some hotel. But there's the difference I think. People don't really treat dogs like dogs any more. And it's a shame for the dogs. They don't live a natural life.

My dog lives the epitome of a ‘natural’ life - he does the exact job he’s bred to do. Outdoors. In all weathers. When he’s not working, he’s outside with me with full run of our smallholding. He loves a car journey with his nose out the window and will race you to the car door. Goes to play golf on a Sunday with my OH. He’s in peak health, perfect condition. He spends at least half his day- often more- flat out sleeping. Because he is tired and fulfilled. He does not care where he sleeps, as long as it’s comfy and quiet and he can cuddle into me if the notion takes him. He’s not ‘holed up’ when he’s in a hotel - he’s happily resting because he’s a content and confident dog who can settle anywhere as his needs are consistently met.

Some folk are bonkers 😂

Well trained working dogs will happily sleep in the back of their familiar car. Probably would prefer it, in my experience. But some owners of 'pet' dogs fail them, by treating them like children.

So you don’t research or call ahead even though you have a dog allergy, yet somehow you’re psychic enough to know all dogs would rather sleep alone in cars in the dark than be with their owners, and that humans have ‘failed’ them by treating them like family. Then you deny saying what you literally wrote. OP, your allergy meds are really doing a number on you.

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 07/03/2026 23:10

Yanbu at all. We have dog allergies and it is ridiculous how hard it is to find dog-free spaces these days.

People used to live life just fine without the need to have their dogs with them at all times, it’s beyond frustrating.

The concept of companion breeds seems to have passed OP by. My dogs are "living their natural life" when they're snuggled in bed with me.

How original. We have someone claiming they think they're really badly off to piss people off and now an anti-dog post to provoke people into responding. AI really needs to come up with some new ideas for their money making click bait. 🎣 1/10.

Oh well. I'm comfortable to be in a large minority.

Businesses are listening to their customers, that’s why many are dog-friendly. Believe it or not, lots of people actually enjoy travelling with pets or spotting them around hotels. Hotels can’t cater to every allergy, preference, or phobia, some welcome dogs, some don’t. OP’s meltdown? Easily avoided with a little research… or common sense.

That’s all well and good if dog-free businesses were easy to find. Unfortunately these days the majority are dog-friendly leaving those allergic to dogs with next to no choice about where to stay or where to have coffee.
Too many places have listened to their customers, unfortunately it’s easy to be vocal about how you would like them to welcome your dogs, it’s much harder to put across the anti-dog side because these days not wanting to be around dogs apparently makes you some kind of awful person.

Where do you want to visit? I am willing to bet you a month's salary I can find you dog-free hotels and eateries in your chosen destination.

Smilesinthesunshine · 07/03/2026 23:21

This country seems to be full of dog haters these days, I am sure that didn't used to be the case. Most dogs I have met are much better than moaning, nasty, whinging and whining humans.

HelloVoid · 07/03/2026 23:24

I travel around and stay in hotels a lot because I compete in a dog sport with my dogs, and go to competitions all over the UK. So I kinda have to bring my dogs. I usually stay in Travelodges as it’s the cheapest option but have stayed in other chains and independent hotels. I don’t really know what your problem is though, there’s far more NON dog friendly hotels out there, so just choose one of them? Premier Inn, for example.

You should not have booked a dog friendly hotel.

Strumpetpumpet · 07/03/2026 23:27

I generally avoid anywhere dog-friendly, as I have allergies. It can be a bit of a pain but it is - for now - still doable, there are some hotels/cottages/ restaurants which don’t allow dogs. If and when that’s no longer the case, I’ll be buying a camper van 😎

Agreed. I used to travel a lot with my terrier for work reasons and often had to stay outside of/on the outskirts of town because dog-friendly, central places were not easy to find.

We almost never found anywhere we could eat out unless we were deep in the countryside.

I’m sure you can find one, maybe even a handful. My point is there’s a massive lack of choice. I know this from experience in looking for UK holiday cottages for the past few years. If I filter by no-pets I get about 10-20% of options available. Same goes for nice coffee shops at weekends- I know from lived experience. It’s completely disproportionate.

when have people ever left their dogs home alone when they were going away for the weekend or holidays, really?

Where did I say they left them home alone?!

Presumably they used kennels or had friends or family look after them 🙄.

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 07/03/2026 20:08

There's absolutely no need for dogs to stay in hotels. They're animals, if you have to take them with you somewhere they can stay in the car overnight with a window cracked open, it won't kill them.
I recently went on a city break, was about to book a really nice independent hotel when I read the bit of the website that said they were dog friendly. So the chain hotel that did not allow dogs got my business instead.

Because dogs are sentient beings, unlike you.

Yes, I always stay in Premier Inns if possible and have never encountered a dog there. I was surprised to find quite so many in the HIE so it took me aback. But now I know so I won't make that mistake again. I stay in different hotels around 40 nights a year and have never seen a dog. Most people are sensible. I'll be more picky with hotels in future.
