Dogs in hotels

SlouchyBeanie · 07/03/2026 19:51

Staying in a chain hotel. Just seen two lots of dogs being taken to stay in a room. One lot was 2 spaniels, the other was a sausage dog and a bigger one I can't identify. I mean, what the fuck!?? I'm allergic to dogs and how do I know if there's been one in my room? Easy, I feel a bit unwell. Am I completely alone in thinking dogs have no business being in hotels and their owners are shit owners to imagine their dogs would enjoy this sort of experience. As I type, a third one has arrived, a terrier looking thing. I'm totally gobsmacked at the number of dogs in this hotel and find it unacceptable. I feel quite fired up about this at the moment, probably made worse by the barking and yapping I can hear. So am I being unreasonable that dogs should not be allowed in hotels?

I am waiting for a thread complaining about bloody cats in a "cat cafe" 😂

Purplecatshopaholic · 07/03/2026 21:59

I have taken my dogs to dog-friendly hotels. However, if you dont like dogs, there are plenty which don’t allow pets. If you are in a hotel that allows dogs, ask for a pet-free room, they always have rooms that they don’t allow pets in, eg for allergies, or just guest preference.

I complain all the time about the cat cafes. I am allergic to cats. It's not fair that other people get to visit cat cafes and pet all the kittens, and I can't.

I'm considering suing them for discrimination.

Although I do think "dogs in dog hotels" is the new "Spanish people in Spain".

AnotherHormonalWoman · 07/03/2026 22:03

(Thankfully) only on mumsnet do I ever see such extreme reactions to people having pet dogs. It's the most bizaare thing.

Tel12 · 07/03/2026 22:03

I've stayed in hotels with my dog, including some 5*. They have allocated dog friendly rooms and possibly somewhere you can sit with your dog and eat, not in the restaurant. It's how things are.

you are the one who is being ridiculous, and it's animal abuse.

Dogs won't get out of the car if they're not in the middle of a field. Why would they? They're dogs living a healthy active doggy life. Why would they want to be in a hotel? They'd be totally perplexed. They sleep in the car regularly when they're out working and their owners are camping/fishing/shooting. Nope. I just can't imagine them being holed up on the 3rd floor in some hotel. But there's the difference I think. People don't really treat dogs like dogs any more. And it's a shame for the dogs. They don't live a natural life.

I'm not trying to amuse anyone. It's the truth that I experience

Chihuahuas were bred to be foot warmers, fyi. It is literally their "job" to get in bed with you and keep you warm, and if you try to tell them otherwise, they stand outside your bedroom door and cry pitifully until you relent (ime)

I have friends who have working dogs. We stay in hotels. The 3 dogs stay in the rear of the car, which is set up for them to sleep comfortably. We take turns to pop down and let them out for 10 minutes and a fuss. Absolutely no need for them to be in a hotel room. Ridiculous.

You take your turn to pop down, make sure the dogs are OK and give them some fuss despite the fact you're allergic to dogs and they make you feel ill?

Very strange!

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 07/03/2026 22:20

I can’t read the thread as there is a massive advert in the way. Cheers Mumsnet for the 20 odd years I have been on this forum. Now a massive advert.

Goldmonkey · 07/03/2026 22:21

This is going to blow your mind, but some dogs do both and are very happy about it.

Dogs are sociable creatures and shutting one in the car when there is a perfectly good dog friendly hotel room they can share with their beloved owners overnight is a ridiculous suggestion. Just stop staying in dog friendly hotels…unless you just enjoy complaining…. 🤷‍♀️

vision of dogs chilling on the bed on their back, wrapped in a dressing gown, watching tv with a glass of wine in the paw 😂

as opposed to "real dog" freezing to death in car

MonsteraDeliciosa · 07/03/2026 22:26

How the heck is being shut in the boot of a car more "natural" and akin to a healthy doggy life than being in a cozy hotel with one's owner? What strange logic.

They don't make her feel ill until she sees them, so maybe she keeps her eyes closed?

I'm envious of that type of allergy. I know when a cat is or has been in my vicinity, I don't need to see them to have an allergic reaction Sad

Thinking of my dogs, if I left them in a car, the big dog would need a big fucking car in order to have enough space to be comfortable; a transit van might work. He likes the warm, so I can't imagine he'd be happy about it, but he'd cope. He's a guarding breed, however, so those trying to sleep near him might not cope.

From the chihuahuas, Beelzebub would spend the entire night attempting to break out in order to savage anyone who had the audacity to walk past his car. Moo would howl until someone rescued her. Augustus would die of fear, and Little Baby Tiny would freeze to death even on a balmy summer night. She is so small, other than that, however, she does not have enough functioning braincells to even notice she is in a car.

SlouchyBeanie · 07/03/2026 22:28

noctilucentcloud · 07/03/2026 21:55

My dog is very much treated as a dog. However, I'm responsible for his welfare and he'd hate being in my car overnight. Dogs don't sleep in one position, they need to be able to move and stretch out. If my dog was in my car overnight he'd be sore and stiff. He'd likely be too cold in winter (it was below freezing when we did our last trip) and in summer there's the risk of overheating. Then there's the risk of theft. My dog is a rescue and has had separation issues. I put in months of dedicated training every day to sort it and he's made massive progress, but he'd get distressed overnight if on his own in a car. And that's more likely to disturb people as he'd howl and bark. Whereas inside the hotel room with me there won't be a peep out of him.

Ok, I'm not talking about my own dogs, I wouldn't have a dog. They have 3 labs they've had from puppy hood and those dogs won't get out of the car unless they're in a field or at least a country road. Sometimes they even sleep in the back of the car on their own driveway on the off chance they might get to go somewhere exciting for doggies. They're out at least 3 hours a day and often all day. Maybe that's formed my opinion of dogs in hotels. The ones I know would not be happy with it

I think OP is on a wind up. ‘Leave dogs in the car with the window cracked open’.

I doubt anyone is unintentionally this idiotic.

I never said that

Indeed. I smell bullshit.

Also, for someone without a dog OP has lots of set opinions on the care of dogs.

She started off not being able to recognise the breeds of dogs ("a terrier looking thing") and now she's lecturing on what perplexes dogs (a room apparently), how people treat dogs and what constitutes a normal life for a dog.

I'm no fan of snakes and don't want one. I wouldn't be arrogant enough to tell snake owners their business.

A good business listens to ALL of their customers. It doesn’t matter how unhygienic or dangerous it is in some cases for people with allergies, these businesses only see the money opportunities. As I said, I vote with my feet.

Businesses are listening to their customers, that’s why many are dog-friendly. Believe it or not, lots of people actually enjoy travelling with pets or spotting them around hotels. Hotels can’t cater to every allergy, preference, or phobia, some welcome dogs, some don’t. OP’s meltdown? Easily avoided with a little research… or common sense.

Funny how my dogs love soft furnishings then. They would like a muddy field for a short while but then they would want to sleep inside, which is their normal - not in the car, not in a field.

Opinions formed on one example are seldom worth a toss and are rarely transferable to other circumstances.

Four out of 5 of my dogs would, 100% freeze to death if they were left in a car overnight.
