Is my morning routine too rigid?

Tuliptana · 01/03/2026 10:52

Feeling upset and questioning myself.
Im an early riser, 6am everyday.

My routine is as folliws
Let cat in and feed him
Open all curtains/blinds snd windows to air the house
Make a coffee and whilst waiting for kettle il bleach the toilets, kitchen surfaces. Empty dishwasher.
Put a load of washing.on
Make bed
Put rubbish out

This takes max 20 mins and i feel relaxed when all done.

My mate is staying and snapped at me to just sit down and chill. However she was just sat, glued to her phone. She always moans she doesnt have time to keep on top of her housework.

I snapped and said if you didn't spend so much time on your phone you could do your jobs easily.
Was i in the wrong and does my routine sound odd and rigid?

Sewage plants don't remove all the chemicals and detergents that we pour down the drain. It all ends up in our waterways (even if the water companies stopped their illegal sewage dumping).

I know this isn’t really the point, but I was wondering if you need to do everything in that routine every day? E.g. do you need to bleach the toilets and kitchen surfaces, empty the dishwasher, put the rubbish out and put washing on every day?

I don’t think the kitchen surfaces will respond well to being bleached every day. And I’m surprised that you use enough crockery/cutlery, clothes and things that you need to put the dishwasher and washing machine on every day, and take out the rubbish every day. It also sounds exhausting.

Perhaps you see it as a calming ritual though, and maybe that’s why you got upset at your friend when she questioned it?

Pretty much this.

unless there's a DH & 5 kids it seems an unnecessary load of things to do daily & unnecessary & rude when you gave a guest staying.

There's nothing wrong with your daily routine (except maybe using too much bleach) but if your friend was asleep on the sofa, then you came in and started opening the curtains, opening the windows, going out to the bin etc I can understand why she'd be a bit pissed off. It's 6am on a Sunday morning.

The friend was already awake and up when OP got up

You need to treat yourself to a kette with a faster boil

Just what I was thinking!

The cat has a cat flap and has for 7 years.
Even if its raining, he will not use it!
He sleeps in the day...thats his routine.

For those hinting at animal cruelty, my cat is perfectly well.

Lovely cat 💕 but I would not have taught him 6am was time for action! Fine in the summer, im usually up much earlier, but not in winter. My animals have always been trained to understand 'morning' is when I say it is, no matter how cute they are!

is the other photo of your lounge this morning??

it's grey, drizzly & full here today. Absolutely no hint of sun!!

FrozenFebruary · 01/03/2026 16:45

Anonycat · 01/03/2026 16:38

Just what I was thinking!

I thought that too! Especially if not over filled I've barely got time to get the mugs & milk out! Let alone bleach anything.

i don't beach the surfaces. They're wiped down several times a day with a clean, hot soapy dishcloth & again with a hot rinsed dishcloth. (Clean one several times a day)

Hedgehog2026 · 01/03/2026 16:46

You are unreasonable to expect a guest to be a morning person just because you are. The cat thing I can understand so no comment there but the excessive use of bleach products is totally out of order. No toilet needs bleach every day and even kitchen worktops should not need to be done so frequently. I think you need to consider the long term impact of this usage. I have a fairly fixed morning routine but nothing I do has a long term impact on the environment. You were wrong to snap at your guest and should apologise to her.

Maybe it’s her partner or other person in the house who has gross toilet habits? The man spraying the loo bowl with shite and walking away from it is fairly common unfortunately, because they’re entitled cunts

True dat

FrozenFebruary · 01/03/2026 16:53

Hhhwgroadk · 01/03/2026 16:20

We/DH cleans all worktops as HRH Minnie + all previous cats have walked all over them, even though cat flaps have been open! All other routines have been carried out taking into consideration other guests' arrival downstairs after waking up.

HRH Minnie wouldn't get away with these here! Not in my eyeline anyway 🥰

but when I had my cats I'd wipe down the worktops immediately before using them (just in case) rather than routinely in the morning as they could sneak up anytime (though never once caught them)

Bearsdolovetrees · 01/03/2026 16:55

It’s weird to bleach the toilets before people use them. Must stink the rooms out all day.

I stick some eco toilet cleaner down about once a week and they’re all totally fine. And no fish are dying because of my obsessiveness

FrozenFebruary · 01/03/2026 16:58

Tuliptana · 01/03/2026 14:40

He has a cat flap so is not locked out!
He chooses to wait for the door to be opened for his majesty.
HTH

Can he actually use the cat flap? Have you seen him? Have you encouraged him through it? (By encouraged I mean with food & a hearty shove?). It took mine some teaching!! Then when we moved my Dad built them a step outside as the cat flap was too high for one of them to haul herself thorough 🤣)

hypnovic · 01/03/2026 16:58

If your routine works for you then do it. Ignore all the nonsense bleach and cat criticism and the ones saying you must have dirty toilets too they just digging at you cause they also phone zombies

Find bleach doesn't smell much (unfortunately & I'm not nose blind to it) but I do still use it as I haven't found an eco one I'm happy with. I'd rather not use it for environmental reasons.
Do you use the Eco brand or another one?

BlackCat14 · 01/03/2026 17:05

I think it’s a normal routine really. I get up every morning with the baby around 7.30 and spend about 20mins doing very similar to you. Feed cat and change her litter tray. Empty dishwasher. Put a laundry load on. Take out recycling. Get babies play gym and toss out, then around 8 I go get the baby (he’s a dream and sleeps until 8ish each morning).

However. If I had a friend staying I’m not sure I’d do this. If I got up and they were already up in the kitchen or living room, I’d offer breakfast and go sit with them. The jobs could wait (apart from the cat, but I’d sort her as I was rustling up breakfast for my guest)!

What utter rubbish.

bleach is vey bad for the environment (I do still use it as I can't find an alternative im
happy with, but as sparingly as possible)

cats should be able to get back into the safety of home overnight & preferably
locked in at night to help protect the wildlife.

Always good to know there are still some sane, normal, people around on MN 👍🏻

LunaDeBallona · 01/03/2026 17:10

My morning routine is pretty much exactly the same as yours except mine is a dog.
I don’t think you did anything wrong at all.

FrozenFebruary · 01/03/2026 17:13

Mrsgreen100 · 01/03/2026 16:14

Sounds great routine
but why are you pouring bleach in the loo every day ?
not normal and bad for the planet

To be fair she didn't say she was 'pouring bleach' into her toilets & she said she uses spray bleach. She might nit be very much at all.

Personally I don't like the spray bleach, I use the thickened bleach if necessary. I try not to use it too much these days as it's so bad for the environment, but can't find an eco one that does the job.

FrozenFebruary · 01/03/2026 17:18

Applecup · 01/03/2026 15:44

House must stink of bleach, never mind fresh air.

The bleach spray really doesn't smell at all.

(shame really as the old bleach smell, smells 'clean' to me)

and no, I'm not nose blind to it

My waste toilet water goes to a sewage plant not into a river! And a drop of bleach is not responsible for damaging aquatic life!!

Thanks for the laugh though...i feel like im in the twilight zone

You are wrong about bleach, images full of detail about how it hurts you and the planet

Our cat will only use the cat flap in one direction. We still need to let her in every day.

Does she need a wee step
oitside to help her access it? Mine did when we moved as it was a touch too high so my Dad built them a lovely step💕

PlanBFertility26 · 01/03/2026 12:23

Cats are hunters. Hunters hunt at night 😂

Im a vet and my cat chooses to go out and stay out all night. He knocks on the door when he’s ready to come back in.

Get a grip giving OP a hard time about it

IF you are actually a vet, you should know & do better.

FrozenFebruary · 01/03/2026 17:45

Snoken · 01/03/2026 12:46

The most unreasonable thing here is that you are pouring bleach into the toilets every day. It will not only damage your plumbing but you are polluting the water and harming aquatic life. It's fine to use occasionally but pouring it in every day is hugely irresponsible and completely unnecessary unless you eat from the toilet.

Bleach doesn't harm your plumbing.

shes also said she uses spray bleach so she isn't pouring it in anyway.
