Is my morning routine too rigid?

Feeling upset and questioning myself.
Im an early riser, 6am everyday.

My routine is as folliws
Let cat in and feed him
Open all curtains/blinds snd windows to air the house
Make a coffee and whilst waiting for kettle il bleach the toilets, kitchen surfaces. Empty dishwasher.
Put a load of washing.on
Make bed
Put rubbish out

This takes max 20 mins and i feel relaxed when all done.

My mate is staying and snapped at me to just sit down and chill. However she was just sat, glued to her phone. She always moans she doesnt have time to keep on top of her housework.

I snapped and said if you didn't spend so much time on your phone you could do your jobs easily.
Was i in the wrong and does my routine sound odd and rigid?

Ok il answer some questions.
I dont live alone, there is a human male alongside the male cat.
Ive got into this routine as i work long days, i often leave the house by 8am and return about 10pm.
I dont have the energy when i get in at night to clean the kitchen, hence i do a mad 20mins in the morning.

I do a wash daily as i wear a uniform.
My cat does not jump on the work surfaces.

if it's not due to your cat jumping on your kitchen surfaces & you're not at home WTF is the adult male doing that makes it necessary (IYO) to bleach them daily? And why isn't he wiping them down after he's been using the kitchen?

why do you need to put a wash on daily to wash one days uniform? Do you need to be provided with more uniform do you can have a fresh one daily without wasting resources putting the washing machine on daily?

Rude to do anything other than sorting the pets when you have a guest staying who was also up. As for saying she was using her phone, well her host was busy bleaching toilets, what else was she going to do for entertainment that early in the morning.

The guest was up before the OP, and was so engrossed with her phone that she didn't even respond when the OP asked if she'd like a coffee. So the OP went ahead with her normal routine.

Well, you didn't mention he'd just been released from being sectioned (I'm
sorry, must be awful for you both) but surely wiping up after himself & having some pride in
keeping his/your environment plesant is something that should be encouraged for his own MH?

People who have MH issues serious enough to warrant sectioning are not always able to function well on a daily basis.

Why would I mention it? All I said was I bleach the tea stains off my worktop. You’re the one that made assumptions that there was nothing else behind it but a useless woman who can’t manage to make a cup of tea.

encourage as much as you like, he can’t even string a sentence together at the moment so talking about tea stains doesn’t really hit home.

Bellyblueboy · 01/03/2026 19:43

Is the poor cat out all night?

Holidaymodeon · 01/03/2026 19:44

It’s a hell of a lot at 6am when you have a guest staying. I’d feel like my host was passively aggressively and resentfully doing chores and angry at me for some reason if that was going on at that time every morning of my stay .
how do you do all that in twenty minutes?
I have disabilities and that feels like a days worth of chores for me. I’d be too knackered to do anything else

UnimatrixZeroOne · 01/03/2026 20:17

You sound entirely normal and organised to me.
There are some truly obnoxious people on this thread. And this site.

Itsmetheflamingo · 01/03/2026 18:25

Again, I will have a shout at him and let him know your thoughts.

You need to understand the difference between ‘having a shout’ and normal conversation about household jobs and expectations. It’s not ‘shout or nothing happens.’ Or it shouldn’t be

Bearsdolovetrees · 02/03/2026 00:28

If you’re out of the house from 8am to 10pm how can you possibly need to bleach toilets and kitchen daily? You’re not there?

The cat has a cat flap and has for 7 years.
Even if its raining, he will not use it!
He sleeps in the day...thats his routine.

For those hinting at animal cruelty, my cat is perfectly well.

I have multiple cats. The youngest (when I say youngest, he's 9) from a kitten would not stay in. He's a hunter and explorer. It would be cruel to keep him in. I have another who is a fair weather type. Will not leave the house unless it's above 10 degrees and would absolutely howl the neighbourhood down if I had the audacity to send him out for some fresh air. Summer nights we won't see him until the sun comes up. Another who is in out multiple times a day if the humans are around and silly enough to answer to his demands!

Nothing to do with your morning routine, just showing some cat solidarity!

I wish I was a morning person like you!

JMSA · 02/03/2026 02:05

I guess you’re used to doing this stuff before work? So it’s now just part of your routine. I like getting a couple of quick chores done in the morning before work, so that I won’t have to face them when I get home! Plus, I’m generally more tired in the evening after work.

You need to understand a partner who shits all over the loo bowl and leaves it is unlikely to respond to a conversation about expectations .

besides, it makes no difference when you have a vulnerable partner, it’s not important enough to spend precious time on.

Nannyfannybanny · 02/03/2026 07:46

I find it gross that people on mn don't clean toilets regularly, people talk about once a week.. we have a square design toilet now, and it's a nightmare,DH is talking about seeing if he can change it..we have very good cold water pressure and it's a bungalow, tank in the loft. I have various gut issues, one toilet, we're retired, it's cleaned after use..it's used a lot.

How big & scary are your cats that you struggle to lock them in at night??

It's great you have a biddable cat but lots of us haven't. On the occasions our cat has had to stay in after a vet visit he has had to have sedation otherwise none of us would get any sleep. Not big or scary just super loud!

AdaDex · 02/03/2026 09:08

climbintheback · 01/03/2026 12:02

Cats aren’t nocturnal they should be in at night - they are not native and our wildlife don’t stand a chance!

You're correct.
They are crepuscular - active at dawn and dusk.

cramptramp · 02/03/2026 09:16

Your house. You do what you want. And that includes letting your cat out all night. I wouldn’t be getting up at 6 to let it in though 🙂. Your friend is rude.

Did you even read the post I quoted?

I have two, a cap flap and try and lock them in at night! Almost impossible!

It might be unpleasant to listen to them carrying on, but impossible?? No.

i had a boy cat who didn't appreciate being kept in overnight, & yes, he created at first, but came to realise that his whinging was getting him nowhere - much like kids whinging for more sweets or more screen time. 💁🏻‍♀️

LeaderBee · 02/03/2026 10:21

It's your house so do whatever you like, but I'd be pretty annoyed, especially at this time of year if someone was opening all the windows in the house at 6 AM

Yeah, but a Sunday morning at 6am when you have a guest staying is not getting a few bits done before work.

Nutmuncher · 03/03/2026 08:05

Maybe bleach the kitchen at night….

Also please add a pint of water into your routine, you need to properly hydrate yourself.

parababe · 03/03/2026 08:34

Tuliptana · 01/03/2026 14:40

He has a cat flap so is not locked out!
He chooses to wait for the door to be opened for his majesty.
HTH

Mine has 2 cat flaps (he didnt like the first one) but wont use either of them! He sits by it and wails until i come and open the door for him. He generally eyeballs me with contempt and then stalks out like he's the the king of the world!!
His wailing is epic, has been known to wake me from sleeping cos he wants to be let out - little bastard 😂

SuzyFandango · 03/03/2026 08:46

You do not need to be bleaching stuff daily. Your home is not an operating theatre, it does not need to be sterile. Its probably quite bad for your health, you are killing all the good bacteria that keep that bad bacteria in check.

Well to be fair you’re the one who said someone who has under section days ago might feel better about themselves if they cleaned their worktops as they go.

Itsmetheflamingo · 03/03/2026 10:58

These are the stains I bleach regularly. You can see an actual tea stain ring pointing in red, then the discolouration around it from old tea stains that have been wiped but the stain remains (pointed blue). Obviously a photo isn’t the best way to demonstrate but I’m not inviting you round to examine

Is my morning routine too rigid?
