Is my morning routine too rigid?

Tuliptana · 01/03/2026 10:52

Feeling upset and questioning myself.
Im an early riser, 6am everyday.

My routine is as folliws
Let cat in and feed him
Open all curtains/blinds snd windows to air the house
Make a coffee and whilst waiting for kettle il bleach the toilets, kitchen surfaces. Empty dishwasher.
Put a load of washing.on
Make bed
Put rubbish out

This takes max 20 mins and i feel relaxed when all done.

My mate is staying and snapped at me to just sit down and chill. However she was just sat, glued to her phone. She always moans she doesnt have time to keep on top of her housework.

I snapped and said if you didn't spend so much time on your phone you could do your jobs easily.
Was i in the wrong and does my routine sound odd and rigid?

I think your friend sounds quite rude really to be on her phone that much and then to be making judgemental comments. Granted, you shouldn't have responded in the way you did though.

I don't think your routine is anything extreme either. I generally put the washing machine on early and spend the first 15-20mins of my day prepping dinner for later. I also empty the bin daily because I purposely only keep a very small bin in the kitchen for use throughout that day which I empty into the wheelie bin every night.

It's your routine and it works for you therefore it's fine.
I'd maybe chill a bit with the bleach - sounds like a lot of needless chemicals.
And I'd get a catflap installed.
But your house, your rules.

Ti's page 7 and I believe OP has clarified at least three times that the cat has indeed got a cat flap! It chooses not to use it to go in.

I agree. How can someone living on their own need to put a wash on every day?

Some of us prefer to wash little and often rather than in big loads. I don't live alone but my husband does his washing and I do mine. I wash bedding on one day, towels and cloths on another day and then clothes on 3 days.

NoSoupForU · 01/03/2026 15:21

Also, I don't use bleach because it makes me heave, but the toilets have toilet cleaner put in them once a day. I don't think it's excessive to do that in a vessel you piss and shit into.

properidiot · 01/03/2026 15:24

Some of these responses make me laugh.

Your house OP - if that's your routine then you should be totally at ease a carry on with your normal morning even if you have guests. It's not as if you threw her out the house.

So you spray some bleach type spray on the kitchen surfaces - absolutely nothing wrong with that when you have a friend staying - you're not spraying her fgs - seriously, some people need to chill. How can giving your kitchen and toilet a quick once over be a problem for a guest staying?

You sound organised and if that's your way to get jobs done then crack on OP.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 01/03/2026 15:29

No idea why people getting knickers in a twist about this.

routine is fine and not harming anyone. It’s what sets you up for the day and it’s up to you!

the OPs guest was already up so no need to bash her about that. She was woken.

sounds like friend was rude - why should you change the routine if it doesn’t affect her she was on her phone anyway. Sounds like she was feeing guilty OP was doing stuff!!

cat is lovely and looks well looked after. Of course it’s ok out at night. It can come in if it wants so isn’t locked out.

Miranda65 · 01/03/2026 15:34

I mean, you can do what you like, but who on earth bleaches toilets ...and every day? You may be what I consider to ge a bit obsessive about cleaning, but I wouldn't comment if I was staying in your house.

Fundays12 · 01/03/2026 15:34

What a gorgeous cat you have. Your routine is yours. I find a lot of people who say they don't have time to clean sit on there phones a lot. They just dont realise how much time they are spending on them. Routines have to work for individuals and if it works for you great.

CompanyOfThieves · 01/03/2026 11:51

I bleach the toilets maybe once a fortnight. I've never used bleach on my worktops.

Never had food poisoning, rarely ill at all.

I have friends who are neurotic cleaners and they always have some bug or other.

Chill out with the bleach and the daily washing, it's all very bad for the environment.

Best post of the day!

Applecup · 01/03/2026 15:44

Tuliptana · 01/03/2026 11:27

To those saying no need to bleach kitchen surfaces daily...i strongly disagree.

And its bleach spray not neat but surely the toilet and kitchen should be cleaned daily?

I like fresh air for 10mins daily to air the house or it smells stale.

House must stink of bleach, never mind fresh air.

Aphroditesangel · 01/03/2026 15:46

Your routine sounds perfectly fine to me and not unlike my own except I use bleach very sparingly due to its impact on the environment. I also don’t get up until 7:15.

Keep doing what you’re doing. If she doesn’t like it then she doesn’t have to stay.

BotterMon · 01/03/2026 15:48

YABU for using that much bleach! Don't you care about the environment?

I agree. How can someone living on their own need to put a wash on every day?

Everyone has different lifestyles.

I only live with DH but we both have manual, outdoor jobs so all our work clothes need to go in the wash at the end of the day. We also have lots of animals so wash the sofa covers weekly too. Add in two loads of towels (our washing machine isn't big enough to wash loads at once), bedding and regular clothes and it easily comes out at 1 load a day average.

SmoothSquirrel · 01/03/2026 15:54

I don’t see anything wrong with your routine. It’s a bit rude of your friend to snap at you to relax when she’s invested in her phone anyway.

sharkstale · 01/03/2026 15:56

All sounds pretty nornal tbh except for bleaching the toilets at that time.

LlynTegid · 01/03/2026 16:05

The first four on your list almost seem non-negotiable, especially the cat's needs!

Bringyourfoldingchair · 01/03/2026 16:11

It sounds similar to my routine. I get the downstairs sorted while making coffee and doing the kids breakfasts in the morning. Stick a wash on, clean worktops, sometimes hoover and mop floor, sort the litter tray. I enjoy my coffee a lot more knowing it’s not a mess. But I do have ocd.

What do you mean "who bleaches toilets"? How do you clean your toilet?!

Mrsgreen100 · 01/03/2026 16:14

Sounds great routine
but why are you pouring bleach in the loo every day ?
not normal and bad for the planet

ThatJadeLion · 01/03/2026 16:15

Kindly, I think it was a little when you have a guest that early in the morning.

Has OP said she lives on her own?

CherryBlossom321 · 01/03/2026 16:19

It’s weird that you’re snapping at each other over nothing. I’d have just said, “I’ll sit down and chill later when I’ve finished my chores, thanks 🙂”. If she persisted further I’d ask her to leave.

Hhhwgroadk · 01/03/2026 16:20

We/DH cleans all worktops as HRH Minnie + all previous cats have walked all over them, even though cat flaps have been open! All other routines have been carried out taking into consideration other guests' arrival downstairs after waking up.

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 01/03/2026 16:25

A morning routine can never be too rigid op :).
