Is my morning routine too rigid?

Tuliptana · 01/03/2026 10:52

Feeling upset and questioning myself.
Im an early riser, 6am everyday.

My routine is as folliws
Let cat in and feed him
Open all curtains/blinds snd windows to air the house
Make a coffee and whilst waiting for kettle il bleach the toilets, kitchen surfaces. Empty dishwasher.
Put a load of washing.on
Make bed
Put rubbish out

This takes max 20 mins and i feel relaxed when all done.

My mate is staying and snapped at me to just sit down and chill. However she was just sat, glued to her phone. She always moans she doesnt have time to keep on top of her housework.

I snapped and said if you didn't spend so much time on your phone you could do your jobs easily.
Was i in the wrong and does my routine sound odd and rigid?

To those saying no need to bleach kitchen surfaces daily...i strongly disagree.

And its bleach spray not neat but surely the toilet and kitchen should be cleaned daily?

I like fresh air for 10mins daily to air the house or it smells stale.

Your routine sounds the same as mine although I get up a bit later. I’d never loaf about until it’s all done. Just my preference. Can’t stand being disorganised

gostickyourheadinapig · 01/03/2026 11:29

Your friend is rude. The social convention is that when you go to stay with someone, you fall in with their routine in so far as you are able to.

sammylady37 · 01/03/2026 11:00

Do you generate enough rubbish that it needs to be taken out daily?

I always take rubbish out daily ,evening job after clearing dinner away.

OP you do whatever you like in your own home but I think it was really rude to snap at your guest /friend.

Completely agree. I clean our bathroom and kitchen every day.

Doesn’t take long to push the hoover over the house either. I do it all before I start work.

When i got up she was already up.
Id said hi do you want a coffee, she barely.looked up from her.phone, so.i just did my thing.

Im up at 6am everyday to sort the cat. I like early mornings.
I think ive noticed this weekend how much time she spends.on her phone and took what she said as a dig at me.

You’re not unreasonable to have whatever routine works for you but you’re unreasonable to be judgmental about how she chooses to spend her mornings - not everyone bleaches their toilets and surfaces and airs out their entire house at 6am on a Sunday in Winter!

Your cat is locked out all night?

He cries to go out at night. If i keep him in he freaks out. Id love him to stay in but he will bite me until he is let out....

Think I’d have told her “my house, I’ll do what I want, if you don’t like it, pack up and go home”.

Exactly this. Doesn't matter what ops routine is. Nobody needs to know why she takes rubbish out or bleaches stuff every day, it suits her. And no I don't do that stuff every day or very often at all. I do not expect to be judged and neither should op.
Lazy friend sounds a bit embarrassed to be honest and op was right to snap.

Have you thought about a catflap?

I don't think it's good to shut cats out at night. Not only is it cold, but they could be attacked by foxes. I appreciate that is unlikely but it happened to a neighbour who lives on the edge of some fields. Their neighbour saw the attack at night.

Saying that, I have 6 cats and have a couple of them on my ring camera just chilling with a visiting fox...

loislovesstewie · 01/03/2026 11:43

I do similar, but cat has a cat flap, I have a hot water dispenser, I use anti bac wipes not bleach, because I decided to have shiny, very shiny worktops and bleach makes them smeary. I find I can get a lot done in the first 20 minutes of the day.
I would have jokingly told friend that I like clean and tidy.

manateeplushie · 01/03/2026 11:43

Personally I only put a wash on and take the rubbish out when needed and bleach toilet on occasion and have never bleached the kitchen in my life, but you do you, I might raise an eyebrow but I wouldn't say anything

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 01/03/2026 11:44

Of course you clean your kitchen daily, but surely a) in the evening after you've used it and b) not with bleach!

Why would you want the smell of bleach in an area where you make food? I wouldn't say anything but I would find it pretty off putting if I were about to eat.

Morepositivemum · 01/03/2026 11:46

That’s almost identical to my routing but I have 4 kids and work so it has to be done, day off and friend staying, I don’t know, and the two of ye snapping and judging each other means neither of you are relaxed and maybe you both need a deep breath!!

BillieWiper · 01/03/2026 11:47

I don't think you need to use so much bleach all the time. If you live alone I can't imagine how you could generate enough dishes or laundry or mess to need to do that stuff each day. But it's your house and it's fine to do what makes you comfortable.

Your friend didn't ask you to give her advice on how she could do her chores more easily. She just wanted you to sit down and relax. So there was no need for your comment. She clearly doesn't care as much about obsessive cleanliness as you do.

L0bstersLass · 01/03/2026 11:51

Fair play to you, I wish I was as organised.
Your friend is in the wrong.

CompanyOfThieves · 01/03/2026 11:51

I bleach the toilets maybe once a fortnight. I've never used bleach on my worktops.

Never had food poisoning, rarely ill at all.

I have friends who are neurotic cleaners and they always have some bug or other.

Chill out with the bleach and the daily washing, it's all very bad for the environment.

Puffalicious · 01/03/2026 11:51

I'm another who thinks that you should be able to do what you want in your own home. All these folk saying it's 'rude' whilst you have a guest?! Would it still be rude if you had a guest for 2 weeks? When would it all get done then?

Personally, I'm a person who cleans the kitchen after dinner & that's it done. DH empties the dishwasher as soon as he's up whilst making coffee, though, & would also do this whatever guests there might be.

If it was an overnight guest I would wait to put on a washing, but if they were going to be around all day I would need to crack on (uniforms/ DH work gear needs done of a weekend morning).

Saying all that, neither of us would be up at 6am at weekends! I'm a long lier, but the time shouldn't matter.

I never understand people saying they 'Don't have time for housework', for me it's a constant thing where we all clean up after ourselves (teens here) & do little & often like your things in the morning. It's just whether it's a priority to some (perfectly OK if it's not)-it's not to your friend, but she shouldn't be critiquing you.

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 01/03/2026 11:52

I always clean down surfaces while the kettle is boiling first thing , we have a cat and who knows if he's jumped up.

Manymoresometimes · 01/03/2026 11:53

You cat is locked out of the house all night? In all weathers? No access to get back into the house? Where does it sleep?

do you not have a cat flap?

Squirrelchops1 · 01/03/2026 11:54

I tend to do any slobbing in bed and once I'm up, I'm up and crack on with stuff that needs doing. I've been away with friends who get up then sit straight back down onto the sofa to chill again. I dont mind and they dont mind if I'm pottering doing stuff either.

I like fresh air for 10mins daily to air the house or it smells stale.

I would say most people don't bleach their toilets and surfaces everyday and are completely fine and healthy, so the evidence would suggest that it's fine to not do this.

It doesn't mean you're wrong to do it, but it doesn't NEED to be done from a health perspective (unless you're running a commercial kitchen or something).

Although, if you're one of those people who has the cat walking across the kitchen side then I would also bleach regularly because that is gross!

FOJN · 01/03/2026 11:57

It's fine if it works for you but I think feeling compelled to stick to it when you have guests does suggest you are quite rigid about your routine. Your guests might find your activity a bit busy for relaxing Sunday morning. Perhaps you could do a few things differently when you have guests.

I'm surprised by some of the things you do daily if you live alone. I can't imagine needing to do washing, running the dishwasher or taking the rubbish out daily. Do these things NEED to be done or are they just part of your routine and you stuck to it whether they are necessary or not.

Bleach kills bacteria but it's not the best cleaner or very healthy to be using so frequently.

Tuliptana · 01/03/2026 11:58

The cat has a cat flap and has for 7 years.
Even if its raining, he will not use it!
He sleeps in the day...thats his routine.

For those hinting at animal cruelty, my cat is perfectly well.

Is my morning routine too rigid?

The only bit about this routine that js unreasonable is your car being locked out all night with no way of getting back into the house. That really is not on. For the rest of it - sounds absolutely fine.
