To think that everyone is getting far too excited about this Green win?

All this fuss about one Green win - I really don't think it's massively significant given the local demographic and the upcoming local elections will be the real test.

As if the Greens are going to get anywhere near power! Not going to happen.

Truss still had better ratings than Keir Starmer.

Fair point. Many if not all of the female politicians the pp listed had higher ratings than Starmer.

Pikachu150 · 28/02/2026 14:56

I know quite a few people in that area and one of the reasons they voted was because they were worried about Reform winning.

Tikitaka20 · 28/02/2026 15:01

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 28/02/2026 07:36

I agree, yet listening to the media, you wouldn't realise this.

You would! The Guardian are covering this point in their reporting the by-election.

LlynTegid · 28/02/2026 15:07

Hype about a by-election result is nothing new. People voted tactically to keep Reform out, same will happen in the Senedd elections to a degree and no doubt for several councils who have elections in May.

It's unusual to have an MP who has done a real job though, shouldn't be novel but sadly is.

NetZeroZealot · 28/02/2026 15:32

Westfacing · 28/02/2026 07:26

They are unlikely to get into power but they will give Labour a very bloody nose over the coming years, and at the next GE.

They will split the left/liberal vote and that will benefit Reform.

Didn’t work in the by-election though did it?

I don't read the papers, just hear tv and radio news.

Papers have way too much bias for my liking so I try to avoid them.

As opposed to TV and radio news 😂 glad you've got that covered

5MinuteArgument · 28/02/2026 17:35

I think the Green win is significant. They've created an Islamo-Left coalition and achieved their victory on the back of growing sectarianism in politics (the constituency is 29% Muslim).

This has proved an effective combination to win power. But I fear it will unravel for them as time goes on.

If you’re concerned about bias, it actually probably makes the most sense to consume as wide a range of news media as you can: a few different papers, radio stations and TV channels.

It's not about the Greens winning as such, no one is saying they are going to be the next Government - it's more a heartening story about people voting against Reform and their dangerous form of politics.

Well, we didnt vote against reform. They double their votes from last time and people on the left say dangerous about reform

tell me, what is dangerous about wanting comtrolled immigration? Protecting women and children? Stopping people who dump their ID into the sea being accepted like a legal citizen? Wanting a low tax, low welfare, low state country. Is anything that I have said there dangerous? I think not, that is all they want but the leftist always think this is wrong.

there are zero rich socialist countries. You cannot tax your way to growth or import millions of people and expect services to get better.

over to you

ForQuirkyFawn · 28/02/2026 18:06

This....is why the uproar about sectarianism, the right have realised that there is a considerable vote out there to keep them out of power...

The Greens agenda is far far more dangerous.

Freud2 · 28/02/2026 18:57

DonnaBanana · 28/02/2026 07:47

I think it is actually the perfect result for Reform. By not winning they avoid a strong anti Reform reaction and it invigorates their supporters to push even harder next time. Also notice how the left vote was diluted into Green and Labour but the Tories didn’t even get their deposit back. The greens eating into Labour could hand a GE to Reform.

I hope so. Reform is our only hope.

Probably, but only so many hours in the day unfortunately.

Yes, that’s true, but - for so many reasons - it’s better to be well-informed than not. If you’re extremely busy, it’s worth asking Google to give you a summary of that day’s headlines and news analysis, or perhaps buying a magazine like The Week, which summarises the news from the major global media each week.

JJWT · 28/02/2026 23:28

Totally disagree. Labour have arrogantly abandoned any real functional socialism in a country that includes millions of socialists, and still expect their votes. The Greens are giving them somewhere to place their X. The last time Labour pivoted to a decently socialist manifesto (2017), it led to the biggest swing to Labour since WW2. Starmer's controllers haven't allowed that. Unless Labour pivot back to the left I think the Greens will mop up. Decent people will also be especially motivated to prevent the Reform scum getting in.

Better than the current run of mugs on offer.

It might just be me being an idiot, but what do people see when they say reform is our only hope? When I look at Farage and reform politicians, most of them are old tory party members, and MPs, how are they going to make the UK better?, and look at the policies that have been touted, it's just reheated toryism...i don't get it???

The problem is the last few Conservative governments weren't really Conservative, more Lib Dem light (due to the effects of the Coalition probably, which is a lesson for Reform). So we can't really judge what a real "Conservative" government would be from recent conservative governments. If you see what I mean.
